“Serving God, Serving People”

Just in case you haven’t noticed—here is the new church logo for Christ Lutheran Church! This design was not de-signed lightly, but with MUCH serious thought.

At the urging of the Joint Consolidation Board, a group of four people from both campuses, met to take into consideration all the ideas submitted to us (and there were many, thank you). It was tough to come up with just the right thing to please everyone, BUT, we sure tried hard to do that very thing. We then took this suggestion along with two other ones, to the JCB for their consideration. And we’re happy to say, that the majority of those present, went for this particular logo to be used on everything re-lated to the church, such as signs, publica-tions, Web page, shirts, stationery, etc. etc.

So, here is what we came up with. A purple cross which stands for Christ our King, in an outline similar to the LCMS cross. The river of blue being a uniting symbol swirling around the cross to reflect our mission of proclaiming the Gospel, reaching lives for Christ, and celebrating God’s Love—throughout our community and the world. Now, we know our Red River is not blue BUT we chose to show this body of water as Living Water and blue seemed to be the best color to convey that. Also, if you look up to the right of the cross, you’ll see a white dove, denoting the peace of the Holy Spirit.

Many thanks to Glenda Conradi, whose computer artistry brought to life the wishes of the many. We think she did a superb job.

Well, there you have it. We hope that we have come up with an appropri-ate logo that Christ Lutheran can embrace and be proud to call its own.

CALLING ALL GERMANS, WANNA-BE’S, AND

ANYONE WHO JUST LIKES TO HAVE FUN!

It’s time once again to unpack your lederhosen and start getting ready for our annual Oktoberfest celebration. For anyone who has attended this event before, you know that this is always a fun evening marked with not only scrumptious food, but also some great entertainment. For those of you who haven’t been before, you don’t know what you’ve been missing. Either way, this year’s attendees are in for a treat. Now that we are offi-cially coming together as the new Christ Lutheran, benefits can be seen everywhere, including Oktoberfest, where a greater membership means a greater pool of entertainers.

If you’re not sure what we’re talking about, here’s the run-down on this event. Oktoberfest of course includes a veritable smorgasbord of good eats from Brats and Sauer-kraut (or hotdogs if you prefer) to German and American Potato Salad. After the food is served, however, is when the real fun begins. Various members of our congrega-tion volunteer themselves to perform in a variety of ways and be a part of our evening entertainment, the Christ Lutheran Revue. Acts vary from the silly to the sublime, but all are received with a lot of joy and, at times, even more laughter. From the Elders singing a beautiful hymn to LWML’ers dancing to “YMCA”, there’s something for everyone.

So we need volunteers. We will need cooks to grill the brats or bring side dishes and desserts. We also need acts for this year’s Revue. All are welcome, but performers need to notify us ahead of time so we can work out the schedule. We have also received some interest in bringing back the “Ugly Miss” Pageant again, so if you would be willing to participate in this portion, we would love to hear from you. If you are interested in being a part of this year’s celebration or helping out in anyway, please contact Lori O’Connor, Melissa Meeks, or Jan Shavers.

No matter what, we hope to see you there. And as always, be a friend and bring a friend. This can be a great way to share a little fun and fellowship with a guest.

DON’T FORGET

WHAT: Christ Lutheran Oktoberfest and Revue

We are happy to report that our friends in the Telephone Pioneers will be able to continue holding their meetings in the Central Christian Church building, formerly Our Savior Lutheran. Our best wishes to this wonderful group of community-serving people.

THE PHONICS PROGRAM

This program resumes at Central Christian (formerly Our Savior Lutheran) on Wednesday evenings at 5:30, on September 10th. Rene’ Reeves, Mary List and Judy Bartz will be teach-ing the children. Hooked on Phonics is the curriculum we offer to Kindergartners through Second Grade. The tuition is $80 per child per session and we follow the Caddo Parish school year. Please pass this information on to your friends and family for we have plenty of open-ings for this fall session.

GOOD SAMARITAN UPDATE!

It’s time for our annual Good Samaritan meeting. It will be hosted this year by Trinity Lutheran Church in Monroe, LA on Saturday, September 20th at 10 a.m. A representative from Good Sam will be there to share with us what has been going on this past year at both the group homes and the campus. We look forward to this meeting each year and this time we hope to be able to share all the fellowship with our new sisters at Christ Lutheran. Please join us as we meet and then go out to lunch together.

We thought it interesting to note that our dear friend, Pastor Bacarrise, was instrumental in organizing the Good Samaritan Auxiliaries. He was also one of the first mem-bers on the Board of Directors of the Campus back in the 70’s.

Friends, if you see a little box for Campbell Soup labels its there for you to place your la-bels. We collect them for Good Sam. They have a day program for the clients, who use their motor skills by trimming the labels and putting them in groups of 10’s. This also helps

them learn how to count.

Good Samaritan Bethesda is in Cypress, TX and we will be meeting their in October with all the auxiliaries. This is when we share ideas and learn how each group has done during the year.

Our officers are: Betty Long, Exec. Sec. (Christ Lu-theran); Pat Minor, Treas./Membership (Trinity, Monroe); Frankie Miller, Sec. (Trinity, Monroe), & Judy Bartz, VP Gov. Brd. (Christ Lutheran).

LUTHERANS FOR LIFE

After counting many coins by manually, we had almost $700.00 as a result of the Baby Bottles fund raiser! Can you believe it, all the mechanical Coin Counters at the banks were broken!! But Sandra and Merlin Hanson gra-ciously lent their “hands” and even said they had a lot of fun helping the Bartz count. Pastor Culver plans to ask Thrivent for matching funds and hopefully we’ll have more news on that soon.

Our next meeting will be held after the reception on Sunday, September 7th at 2 p.m. We’ll be mak-ing plans for other fund raisers to reach out into the community.

Please keep this ministry to the women at the Cri-ses Pregnancy Center in your prayers.

CROSSWAYS

This Bible Study will resume meeting on Thursday, September 4th at Christ Lutheran. Mike O’Connor, study leader, said the class will continue its 6:30 p.m. start time. Be sure to consult the Sunday and Wednesday bulletins for updates.

Hebrews 6:1-4 (NIV) “1 Therefore let us leave the elemen-tary teachings about Christ and go on

to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2 instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judg-ment. 3 And God permitting, we will do so.” This passage is a tough verse and a slap of reality to many. This poses a tough question to ponder. How well do you know the Bible? How many times have you read through the Bible? Have you ever read through the Bible? Many who are reading this are probably wanting to move on to the next article, I en-courage you to read on. Christ Lutheran has a lot to offer. The Hebrews passage tells us that we should not get stuck on the “basic” teachings of the Bible, but that we should move on to the deeper meanings and truths revealed in God’s Word. Notice the elemen-tary teachings that we are to progress on from includes: teachings about Christ, repentance, faith, bap-tism, laying on hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment! Are there any of these areas that you still don’t have a handle on the Bible’s teachings? If so, I encourage you to get back into the Word? There are many options! The number one option chosen by most is “to do nothing.” This means never really growing in Christ. Unfortunately, many Christians willingly choose to not dig deeper into God’s Word. They choose to struggle with the “elementary teachings” of the Bible.

A second popular option is to read the Bible at home. This is where my life’s journey began, except I was at college. My freshman year, I read the Bible from cover to cover and it was life changing. I was a Christian before, but now I was moving into the deeper meanings of God’s Word, moving beyond the “elementary teachings.” In fact, it is the reason I decided to leave the denomination that I attended and began worshiping as a Missouri Synod Lutheran. You see, I was not raised a Lutheran, but I chose to be a Missouri Synod Lutheran. To be honest, I am quite proud of my decision; I am not ashamed! I left my previous denomination because they were making decisions based on the world instead of God’s Word. You see, if the leaders of the church do not know the elementary teachings, or have not moved on beyond the “elementary teachings,” then what do they have as a basis for running the church? What they know are usually “worldly issues,” but not the Bible. This is where churches have headed down the wrong tracks.

There is a third option that I highly encourage. Attend a Bible study. What does Christ Lutheran have to offer in this area? A lot! We are not only a church, but also a school. Are you aware that we have many opportunities to grow in God’s Word? Sunday morning, there are four adult classes. The Pastor’s class, Harv Wilkening’s class, Jerry Bartz and Rob Meyer’s class, and Melissa Meeks class. These are great opportunities to grow in God’s Word. There is also the NEW Wednesday Night Service which is mostly geared towards an interactive Bible Study. This meets at 7:00 PM and lasts only an hour. This service is designed to bring your friends, family, and enemies to study God’s Word. On Tuesday morn-ings at 11:00 AM, we have a Bible Study at the church that is currently studying the Book of John. On Thursday mornings at 9:00 AM, we have a Life Light Bible study (a structured Bible study with a work-book) that meets at the Hamilton/S. Caddo Public Library. This class is currently studying the Book of Matthew. Another option is Crossways. We hope to have the Crossways Bible Series up and running in September. I’m not writing this to make you feel guilty, on the contrary, I’m writing this to en-courage you to see how much Christ Lutheran has to offer when it comes to studying God’s Word. It is life changing! There is power in the Word! Let’s make this year a year of growth! Not only for Christ Lutheran, but your personal growth. Let the Holy Spirit work within you!

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Perry Culver

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Where in the world did this summer go? It seemed like only yesterday when we were all making plans on how we were going to spend our summer vacation. The next thing you know, it’s already gone. The trip to the beach is only a memory now, with the possi-ble exception of that sand you can never seem to get completely vacuumed out of the

trunk of your car. Oh the memories.

For me and my family, this will be a summer we wish hadn’t happened, but it did and now it’s time to move for-ward. Which brings me to the focus of this month’s message.

Time to move forward. We’ve all heard it time and time again but what does this mean? (with apologies to Mar-tin Luther) Well, if you’re a member of one of two Lutheran churches in Shreveport, you’re “hopefully” gearing up for some very exciting times. You’re looking forward to September 7, when Pastor Kurtis Schultz, President of the Southern District-LCMS will officially declare Christ Lutheran Church as the newest member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

That particular day will be a day of historical proportions. Not only will we be standing UP our new congrega-tion, but we will also be witnessing the installation of Reverend Perry Culver, the very first pastor of the newest con-gregation. We will all, also, be blessed enough to be known from now on as “Charter Members” of Christ Lutheran! Think about that. Charter Member! Brings to mind that old American Express commercial doesn’t it? “…. member-ship has it’s privileges…” Well, can you imagine having any better privileges than what can be attained by member-ship in Christ’s church? Everlasting Life! What could possibly be better than that? Does your Visa Card offer you this as a gift? Does American Airline have everlasting life as a mileage reward? Last time I checked, they didn’t. Don’t hold your breath waiting on it to happen either.

Now, I’d like to bring you up to date on a few of the other “happenings” within our new church family. Our nominating committee is in the process of posting the slate of candidates for positions on the new Board of Lay Leaders (BLL), as well as for the standing committee of Elders. We will hold this vote on September 28, at our Con-gregational Voters Assembly. The following Sunday, October 5 will find our new officers and Elders being officially “installed” and the JCB being discharged from its duties.

The day before we vote, Saturday, September 27, will find us gathering in the fellowship hall for this years ver-sion of “Oktoberfest!” Please make plans to attend and enjoy all manner of “fun, food and fellowship” at this year’s festival! By the way, do us all a favor and invite friends and family. We’ll try not to embarrass you too badly. After all, if Ken Stump can wear a dress and still show up on Sunday mornings, what more can I say?

I’d like to close this months update by encouraging each of you to find ways of involving yourselves in starting up Christ Lutheran Church. We will be needing plenty of people to fill many different slots in making our goal of quality and excellence a part of everything we do. I’d also like to thank the Our Savior folks for allowing me the privilege of serving as president of Our Savior Lutheran Church. I look forward to serving in whatever capacity I can to help make Christ Lutheran Church a congregation that overcomes any and all barriers in touching the lives of the un-churched and de-churched, bringing as many lost souls to love and be loved by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

In Him,

Mike Holland

Confirmation Class To Begin

The Youth Confirmation Class I scheduled to begin Thursday, September 19th, at 7:00 PM. This is a 2-year program, teaching the youth about Jesus, Salvation, and the Church. We will be using Luther’ Small Catechism. Students can begin as early as 6th grade. If you have any questions, please call Pastor Perry Culver at 518-8767.

FUN AND GAMES NIGHTS Come join in the fun by playing your favorite games and enjoying good fellowship. Every month there will

be three game nights. MONDAY FAMILYGAME NIGHTS On the second Monday of every month, there will continue to be a Family Game Night. This month we meet on September 8th. People of all ages are welcome to gather to play various domino games, word games, Rum-mikub and your favorite board games. It begins at 6:00 P. M. and ends whenever! Bring a drink or a dish for a light supper. All members and friends of all ages are welcome. Feel free to bring your children, for we’ll be sure to have great movies and games for them to enjoy. For more information, call Melissa Meeks at 469-2156.

TUESDAY GAME NIGHTS On every other Tuesday night, Empty Nesters gather to play dominos, “Spinners” and “42" at 6:00 P.M. We bring supper foods, main dish, salad, fruits, and a dessert. We play one game, then serve supper and have fel-lowship (just lots of visiting and laughing). After supper we play one more game of each. This group is for the over “55" or so!!!! In September we will meet on Tuesdays, September 9 and 23. Bring a dish or some cold drinks and have a lot of fun. You don’t have to know how to play Spinners, they are easy to learn. If you need additional details, call Irma Mecom at 865-0362 about the Empty Nesters. As you can see—here are more opportunities for members of Christ Lutheran to spend fun times getting to know one another better. If you’ve been to Game Nights in the past, we hope you will continue to do so. If you’ve never been, now’s the time to start!

Embers: Spread the Fire!

On August 24th we elected new officers and counselors for the coming year:

President: Matt Holland Vice President: Ben Culver

Secretary: Madison Cooley Historian: Shelby Carlson

Treasurer: Eric Blankinship

Counselors: Mike O’Connor (Head), Marie Carlson, Rene’ Reeves, and Patrick Fertitta

Our new project will be **Chris’ Elephants** - This is where we need help from our church. We’ll be making stuffed elephants in memory of Chris Holland and deliver them, as a whole group, to children in the hospital. This will be to let them know that God loves them and there is hope that they will get well. We will be giving the children a small story book to go with the elephant. BUT, we need help to put these elephants together. If you would like to help us with this project, please contact any of the youth or one of the counselors. Our entire group is excited about this and it means so much to all of us to do this in the name of our friend (and cousin), Chris.

Madison Cooley, Secretary

Altar Flowers

If you would like to purchase flowers for the Altar, a flower chart is located next to the Financial Office in the church hallway. The flower arrangements cost $15 for the center flower arrangement and $30 for 2 side arrangements. More than one person can sign up for flowers. The flowers are then given to those who paid for them after the service is over.

Kroger, at the Bayou Walk Shopping Center, makes the arrangements weekly. When you sign up for flowers, specify color and please annotate the reason such as “in memory of” “congratulations” or birthday/anniversary. If possible, please pay for the flowers when you sign up so the flower fund keeps a positive balance. There are lots of openings for the next 6 weeks if you’re inter-ested.

A decision will need to be made if Christ Lutheran wishes to keep employing Kroger for flowers. Please let Cheryl Bull (for now), Pastor or an Elder know if you have a preference and those responses will be passed on to Pastor and the Elders.

Well Ladies, its time again for our next meeting on Sunday, Sep-tember 14th after church service. A light lunch will be provided. Plans will be made for hosting our first Fall Rally as Christ Lutheran Church!

On Saturday, October 4th at 9:30 a.m. we will be hosting all the LWML Ladies from the Northern Zone. It will be a great time for us to get together for fel-lowship, Bible studies and simply sharing with one another. We will be having an ingathering for the Crisis Pregnancy Center. Items such as the following would be most welcomed: disposable dia-pers, lotions, powder, wet wipes, sleepers, etc. We invite you to help with and participate in this Rally Day Event.

On Sunday, October 5th we will be celebrating LWML Sun-day. Some of the ladies will be participating in the church service. We’ll also have our annual Joyful Noise Offering.

Another of our projects is col-lecting small soaps and toiletries which are taken to the Rescue Mission. There is a box labeled LWML so if you’d like to partici-pate in this outreach, please put

your items into the box.

This group is also preparing for the Talent Revue to be held during the Oktoberfest. The evening of September 27th will truly be an-other night to remember!!!!!

MY CHURCH

My church is composed of peo-ple like me. We make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship, if I bring them.

My church will be a church of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a church with a no-ble spirit, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with those things.

Therefore, with the help of God, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my church to be!

Proclaiming the Gospel - Reaching Lives for Christ - Celebrating God's Love

We are not quite to the point of picking out curtains for our new facility

and I am not sure if we should go with the pink or orange with yellow polka dots ….

OK, I won’t be part of the interior decorating but I do pray everyone will continue to focus on God’s wonderful gift of Jesus Christ as we deal with the myriad of details that are to come. One of our challenges will be to not get bogged down with insignificant details. One of the important tricks will be to figure out what details are in fact insignificant.

If we keep our mission statement out in front of what we do, we can focus our energies and effec-tively move forward. We should coordinate our efforts with the various activities to more effectively conduct our ministry. Do our Bible studies complement our stewardship program? Is our evangelism program coor-dinated to effectively reach lives for Christ? Do we actually celebrate God’s Love or do we put on a “happy” face because we don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings?

We have the opportunity to make a fresh start on the way we do business. Please continue to pray for guidance to keep our focus on God’s Word and don’t let us forget to celebrate God’s Love along the way.

N E W ! W e d n e s d a y N i g h t S e r v i c e

The Saturday Night Service has been moved to Wednesday night. The focus of this service is on Bible Study. Instead of a sermon, there is an interactive Bible Study where you participate by asking questions, or just sit back and enjoy. Open discussion is encouraged, but no one is called on to read or to answer questions (no fears!). If you have a question or want to read, raise your hand and volunteer. The liturgy has been greatly reduced so that you can invite friends to come and participate without being lost in the liturgy. You will still recognize key components of the liturgy included, along with a couple of hymns or praise songs. The main thrust of this service is to dig deeper into God’s Word and to reach out to the community and invite your friends,... or enemies! We had a good turnout on Wednesday, August 20th and again on the 27th. The service begins at 7:00 PM and lasts only 1 hour. It is a work night and school night, so 1 hour is the max, with the opening night finishing in 55 minutes!!! Come grow in God’s Word.

Up and Down

the Aisle

Congratulations to Kristen and Taylor Foss. Kristen made the Dean’s List at Milsap College last semes-ter. Taylor made the Honor Roll at Byrd then as well. Good work girls!

It’s always good to hear from former members Don and Dru Fugate. They are all doing great and tell us they are now living in Oklahoma City. They send their love to all their old friends.

Judy Bartz tells us you have to be careful what you ask for. During our recent move, Mike Holland asked her if she would clean out the church attic. With the help of Matt Holland, cousin Wesley Williams and Ben Culver, THEY DID IT! Our leaders Mike and Alan Parmater, were a bit overwhelmed at all the “treasures” that came down the ladder. Mike was heard to say, he wished he’d never ask for this favor!!!!

From the Parish Nurse Newsletter

From Dr. Marcia Schnorr … I have read and reviewed the proof copy for If God is My Strength. Why am I Still Tired?, a book of devotions for Christian caregivers, written by Maggie Hilmer. I was the care-giver for my mother the final three years of her life and identified with many of the thoughts expressed in this new resource. The booklet is available from Creative Communications for the Parish. To order, call 1-800-325-9414 or visit www.creativecommunications.com. Mention book code GMS

Bible Believing!

Lutheran Christians believe the Bible to be the inspired, inerrant and infallible Word of God. We hold the Old and New Testaments to be a special revelation from God concerning His plan of sal-vation for the whole world. Bible reading and Bible study are important to us as we continue in our relationship with the very Word made flesh—Jesus Christ

Holy Spirit Heeding!

Lutheran Christians believe that we cannot by our own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, our Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called us by the Gospel, enlightened us with His gifts, sanctified and keeps us in the true faith. We were saved two thousand years ago when Jesus said from the cross, “It is fin-ished.” The Holy Spirit applies that to each of us through the gift of faith.

Sacraments Receiving!

Lutheran Christians understand that God works through means. He has chosen to be active and present in the water of Holy Baptism and the bread and wine of Holy Communion as His Word is connected with these elements. God comes to us with His promises of grace, forgiveness and new life. Faith receives the blessings be-stowed in and through these means of grace.

Love Sharing!

Lutheran Christians awakened to God’s grace in Jesus Christ and aware of His over-whelming love for lost and condemned sin-ners are eager to share this love with all people. Our Savior Lutheran Church is here to make everyone a disciple of Christ by teaching the Word, administering the Sacraments, by supporting one another in love, however necessary, and by using the gifts of the Holy Spirit daily.

Cross Embracing!

Lutheran Christians embrace a theology of the cross. We approach our faith realisti-cally and the words of Christ truthfully when He told us that if the world hated Him and persecuted Him it would most certainly do the same and more to His disci-ples. St. Paul affirms this when he said that when he was weak then was He strong. We understand we are poor, miserable sinners — saved only by God’s grace alone.

New Life Living!

Lutheran Christians enabled and directed by the Holy Spirit honor our Lord and Sav-ior Jesus Christ by living lives devoted to Him. Having received salvation as a gift, our response is to uphold the Ten Commandments, to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind,” and “love your neighbor as yourself.” At Our Savior Lutheran Church we are reminded by this simple phrase: Serving God, Serving Peo-ple
