everyone who participated in this fundraiser.

The ministry of SHC is funded entirely by the generous giving of God’s people. You will notice that we do not pass the offering plate; however, there are offering boxes in the back of the auditorium. We believe from the Word of God that the Spirit of God will lead people towards giving back to God of their first fruits. “...God loves a cheerful giver,” (2 Cor. 9:7). LUKE Part 34

Luke 7:36-50

“The Sweet Smell of Grace”

Presented by

Pastor Justin Greene

August 23, 2015

Hearing that Jesus is dining with Simon the Pharisee, a

woman grabs her most prized possession and makes

her way to Simon’s house. Our first response might be

that she is quite rude, since she has not been invited to

the dinner. However, it is not unusual for the citizens of

a town to crowd around the walls or portico of the

room where dinners like this are being held...

What is unusual is what happens next. She steps

from the crowd and moves towards the reclining

guests. You can be sure that at this point the clattering

noises of the busy servants stop, side conversations at

the table suddenly become irrelevant, and the buzzing

among the gathered townspeople trails off as all eyes

become fixed on her. No doubt guests and observers

alike elbow each other and point to her as she moves

from the crowd to the dining room. Everyone knows

who she is. In fact, some people no doubt know her

quite well. For her to invade the space of the invited

guests sends a curious chill over the evening.

Furthermore, Simon, who has been busy engaging the

guests and managing the servants, is no doubt stunned

into a state of shock. This evening is not going as he

had planned.

What she does next not only steals the show but

also flies in the face of tradition and the finely tuned

religious sensitivities of Simon and his guests. In spite of

the stares from the crowd and Simon’s disapproving

glare, she picks her way through the guests, looking for

Jesus. Finding Him, she stops at His feet – where the

servant of the house would normally stand – and breaks

the suspense with deep sobs that find her tears falling

on Jesus’ feet. She loosens her hair to wipe the tears as

she bows at His feet and kisses them over and over

again. Then the heavy, alluring fragrance of perfume

penetrates the room – which has been full of the

aroma of the wine, figs, and lavishly prepared food – as

she opens her alabaster vial and anoints His feet. This is

a fragrance that may have embarrassingly reminded

some of the guests of earlier trysts with her.

Count on it, Simon is scandalized! Before the meal,

he would have performed ritualistic cleansings to purify

himself according to the traditions of the pharisaical

code. For a woman – any woman, but particularly a

woman of this character – to step out and lovingly

anoint Jesus in the presence of Simon and his guests is

abhorrent to his sense of propriety and purity. It simply

is not religiously correct. He has no space in his system

of righteousness for bold and beautiful expressions of

love that come from a heart unfamiliar with the

codified constructs of “goodness.”

What is so admirable about this woman’s act of

adoring love is that it is played out with unusual

courage and a refreshingly innocent audacity. A

woman of her tainted reputation can expect nothing

but judgment and rejection in Simon’s presence. She is

little more than a marginalized outcast. Yet, lost in her

love for Jesus, she rushes into the presence of her self-

righteous accusers and acts out her grateful affection

for Him. Her love for Jesus is an overwhelming

compulsion. It prompts her to transcend the ordinary

with acts of affection and adoration that catch the

attention of even the most cynical onlooker...1

What are we to think?

LET’S REVIEW UP TO THIS POINT

TAKE A LOOK AT... 1. The Right Person with the Wrong Heart

Life has more than one test.

How do you treat others from whom you can gain

nothing?

TAKE A LOOK AT... 2. The Wrong Person with the Right Heart

Emotionless giving/worship is born from duty.

Passionate giving/worship is born from devotion.

When your faith is on display who is the focal point?

TAKE A LOOK AT... 3. The Perfect Person with the Forgiving Heart

When you hear from Jesus do you ask, “Why would

she?” or “Why wouldn’t I do that?”

If serving the Lord is a barometer for the depth of your

experience of grace, what does your activity say

about you?

TAKE A LOOK AT... 4. The Lost Person with the Questioning Heart

How we use our time, talent and treasure screams to

the world around us, “Look at this!”
