UN GIORNO ARRIVERO

SILVANAMOSSANO

A century of Italian history retold through an intimate, universalfamily saga. Mossano is the new Sveva Casati Modignani

For Anita, America (that she pronounces ‘la Merica’) means dream, hope, and sorrow. Sorrow because her sister Irene migrated to Americanever to return; it is hope because she wants to go there too, to start anew and better life, far from the hardship of a peasant’s life and the dif-ficult years between the two World Wars; finally, it is a dream becauseevery year that goes by seems to push la Merica further away from Anita. However, Anita is not going to give up: she lives her life waiting for thatmoment when she will get to the dock, embark on the ship and cross thevastness of the ocean.History walks side by side with the novel’s characters; it touches themand turns their life upside down.

«At last an emotional, dramatic account of a time when we werethe ones emigrating to, and dreaming of, America».

Sveva Casati Modignani

Silvana Mossano lives in Casale Monferrato. She is a journalist and hasbeen working for the daily La Stampa since 1989.

UN PO’ DI TUTTO

IDAVISOCCHI

Eight notebooks are found in an attic quite by chance by a grand-daughter, just like in a novel

The notebooks are scrupulously written in neat and elegant handwritingand explain everything a young woman should know when contemplat-ing marriage. Or at least a young woman in the 1940s.

The notebooks are what Ida Visocchi, a brave and loving Neapolitan mo-ther who lived in the early part of the 20th century, gave to her daugh-ters as a wedding gift, in a period in which tradition played an importantrole in people’s lives. The gift to her daughters was to help them over-come their doubts and satisfy their curiosity on the eve of their marriage.

Ida Visocchi was the second of nine children. She spent her childhoodin boarding school; afterwards she married and had five children. Idawas a fighter: during World War II she used to go to the black marketby herself to buy milk and flour for her family. At one point she evenhad a hole dug in her garden to hide some political refugees. She wasa generous woman with impeccable good taste; despite dedicatingher life to her family, she was also a very talented business woman.

LA TEORIA DEL CAOS

SARABOERO

A love affair between a young man and a young woman who cannever have enough love. A novel for a generation hungering forhappiness.

Miriam and Evan are in love. Evan is a sociopath. At times, Evan treatsMiriam with insolence and arrogance. At other times, the intensity ofhis love is what Miriam wants more than anything else in the world. Evanshuts himself up in his apartment, whereas Miriam has her own life, herown job, is smart and pleasant and faces life with her own brand of bit-tersweet irony. Evan closes himself off to reality because he has no de-fenses. Miriam protects herself because she has way too many. Two livesthat never mesh, two incompatible natures, united by a darkness socomplete only one will ever see the light of day.

« La teoria del caos is a genuine and direct story imbued withemotions. »

Panorama.it

« A skilful and confident style shapes an authentic, original andhonest novel. » La Voce

« Sara Boero shows a masterly and confident writing, a light toneand a constant penchant for irony; her funny, witty remarks arethe perfect way to ease the uncertain, dramatic developments ofthe story. »

Walter Fochesato – Andersen

Sara Boero was born in Genoa in 1985, where she lives and is workingtoward a university degree. She started writing stories when she was sixyears old and has never looked back since.

«[...] Sara Boero is gifted with a light touch that is the exact op-posite of superficiality. She uses narrative artifices, and even poe-tic devices, to successfully lead the story towards a believable en-ding.»

LE MADRI CATTIVE

NICOLETTAVALLORANI

A very dark story about a hot-button issue. Targets adults andmystery-lovers.

A noir, a dark story where tabloid-worthy events – children killed by theirmothers – are illuminated by the flash of the camera of a photographer. The protagonist, Annie, can’t let go of these cases which seem almostinterconnected, something even darker than the tragic and irreparablerejection of their children by the murdering mothers. Annie is helpedin her research by a childhood friend, a psychologist, and by a young po-liceman who seems to take her and her investigation to heart. Annie dis-covers that some of these killer moms were treated by her friend andsuspects that the killings mask a terrifying yet carefully planned pattern.

« Only Nicoletta Vallorani’s beautifully delicate and tender prosecould approach one the most disturbing themes of our time withthe right sensitivity. » Intimita

« A psychoanalytical thriller of great strength. » l’Unita

« Without ever indulging in truculent details and thanks to a pre-cise, terse and intense style, Le madri cattive reveals, almost natu-rally, its terrible secret. The novel confirms that there are goodbooks and bad books. Nicoletta Vallorani is definitely a writerof good books. »

UN FISICO IN SALOTTO

GUIDOCORBO

A guide to discover the basis of physics

The book is a pleasant conversation on physics among friends in their liv-ing-room, full of easy to understand and direct examples, such as the ex-planation of the basis of action and reaction.

« To each action corresponds an equal and opposite reaction. What wemean by this is that if a body applies a certain force on another body, thelatter will apply back an equal and opposite force on the first body. Wecan see this when we press the button to call the elevator which will takeus to our friend’s house: we apply a certain force on the button and thebutton applies the same but opposite force back on our finger, whichcan be seen slightly deformed! »

Did you ever ask yourself whether it is possible to locate a switched offmobile phone? This book unfolds like a fun conversation in a cosy living-room between friends who are completely inexperienced but at thesame time interested in the explanation of the most curious phenomenaof physics. Going from Einstein to an appliance store: an easy book, without formulas (apart from one: E = mc2) written in a simple, clearstyle, suitable for any kind of reader.

Guido Corbo is a professor in General Physics at the Sapienza Universityin Rome and is the author of the textbook most frequently used by upperschool teachers: Fisica Classica e Fisica Moderna. This is his first book forgeneral public.

C’E DEL MARCIO IN INGHILTERRA

GAIASERVADIO

Good Luck England! The merciless picture of a country in thewords of someone who loves it

No other country managed to erode its institutions with so much dili-gence and zeal as England has done. In a lively, harsh and ironic styleGaia Servadio collects data, events, and real stories to reveal the weak-nesses of a wounded society afflicted by the same flaws that are affect-ing the whole of Europe: hypertrophic bureaucracy, increasing unem-ployment, a waste of public money and the collapse of the nationalhealth service and state schools (which used to be the pride of Great Brit-ain). There is only one way out: English citizens have to turn thingsaround and to start reconstructing all that, from Margaret Thatcher toTony Blair, has been destroyed under their very eyes – tradition, culture, dignity and the sense of the State.

«Merciless and passionate as if she were facing a lost love, butmaybe not lost forever.» ttL

«With her distinctive irony, her sharp gaze, and the knowledge ofsomeone who lives close to what happens, Gaia Servadio offers alucid and fact-based analysis of the country where she has beenliving for fifty years.» Il Mattino

Gaia Servadio is a journalist and writer who lives between London andItaly. She used to write in La Stampa, Corriere della Sera, The Times, andObserver.
