I announced a couple of weeks back that I am collaborating with Robert Scoble on anew book, whose working title is The Age of Context: How it Will Change Your Life& Work.
At that time I said we would be posting interview notes and early chapter drafts onthis site as well as at Scobleizer.com. Below is a draft of our Table of Contents. Itwill serve as our roadmap as we write this book.
We are posting it for several reasons. One, of course, is that we hope to stir upinterest in what we are doing. But of equal importance is that we hope you may havesome ideas about companies or content that we should include in Age of Context, and third, we strongly believe that your feedback will help us write a better book.
So give it a look, and let us know what you think. You can leave a comment here oremail me if you choose.

Introduction. Over the freaky line.
We begin by telling the story of Dr. Steve Mann, father of the wearable computer, who was forcefully thrown out of a Paris McDonald’s because he was wearing hisvisionenhancing wearable computer. Our key point is that new technology makespeople more than a little uncomfortable. Wearable glasses, such as Mann waswearing or like Google: Project Glass is preparing ‘cross the freaky line.’ We

explain that wearables are just a tiny tip of a very large iceberg and will imminentlytransform our lives and work as we know it.
In the new age, all things will connect and talk to each other and to you. Yourtoothbrush will tell you when you have a cavity. Paraplegics will walk on robots thatknow where you intend to go and your personal calendar will notify your colleaguesthat you are running late without you doing anything.
This is a book, our intro explains, about a great many innovative technologies thatare simultaneously converging on the marketplace in the next half dozen or so yearsand like the bullies who confronted Mann may freak you out at first. Our book is toexplain what is happening, how and why it is happening and let you understand thatwhile there are many problems and unanswered questions, what is happening isremarkably to your advantage and enjoyment.
Chapter 1. The Six Pillars of Context
First, there was a static web of sites that looked pretty much like corporatebrochures. Then came the social web, where people could talk with each other andshare and recommend relevant content. Now comes the Contextual Web, where thetechnology understands who is visiting them, understands your preference and canpredict what you want from them. There is a humanizing quality to the technology, which can be eerie, at times and extremely useful at others.
This new Web is in the final stages of development and is taking rapid form as if itwere some sort of solar system that had just experienced a very big bang. It hastaken a very long time to reach this late formative phase. Six underlying technologythemes are supporting the new Contextual Web.
We call them the Six Pillars. They are:
The Internet of Things. Sensors are little devices that detect or measure such physicalphenomena such as light, motion, temperature, radiation, vibration, etc., then they eitherrecord or transmit findings to a control instrument. They are usually pretty simplemechanical devices, such as a timer on a sprinkler system or a trigger in a homethermostat. They are being installed everywhere from neighboring planets where they maybe searching for life, in our cars and phones, at traffic signals, in spy satellites and in placeand places that may surprise you, such as buoys, drawbridges, workout shoes, lamps andtoasters, to name a few. Soon they will be reporting on what’s happening on every squareinch of the developed planet and beyond the frontiers of outer space and deeper in the oceanthan humans can go. Through innovations in WiFi and Bluetooth, these devices will soonbe talking to each other, sharing data and redistributing it to the people who are likely tocare.

I am not sure I agree that social values have changed since our ancestors were living incaves, even if our behavior has. We still believe in feeding our families and protectingour young, teaching them what we know, defending against predators, etc. All that haschanges is the tools we use.

This book sounds great! I’d like to read about using big data building personalization context, about how someone designs contexts using internal data mixing external data (only big companieswith big investments on intelligent tools or also small companies could use these models…)Thank a lot Shel
