THE JOY OF THE LORD IS YOUR STRENGTH

We find in the Holy Bible where it is written that the joy of the Lord is

our strength (Nehemiah 8:10). You get to choose your outlook each

day, so it is important to choose wisely and well. A joyful outlook can

give you the winning edge.

A joyful outlook can also determine how others respond to you. When

you smile, people tend to smile back – but when you come across as

hardnosed, they’re likely to respond in kind. This isn’t rocket science,

but it is easily forgotten.

A joyful outlook brings happiness. English literary figure Samuel John-

son said: “He who has so little knowledge of human nature as to seek

happiness by changing anything but his own disposition will waste his life

in fruitless efforts and multiply the grief he proposes to remove”.

A joyful outlook always brings the best result. Successful people

embrace this truth, whether it’s a surgeon going into the operating room,

a pastor preparing a sermon or an executive launching a new business

venture. Confidence increases your chance of success every time.

So when you approach a task, especially one that you don’t relish, fix

your mind on God’s promises and not your feelings. That will get you

back on track every time – guaranteed !

FOR MAKING VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2016

A HUGE SUCCESS

”I’VE GOT TALENT, SHOWCASING MY WORK FOR JESUS” was four

days of fun and learning for all age groups from nursery thru adults

which included bible study, arts and crafts projects, music, gym activities

and delicious refreshments for all. Bible study topics included “Adam

and Eve, Gardeners/Caretakers”, “Esther the Activist”, “Jesus the

Carpenter” and “Paul, Writer/Motivator”.

Congratulations to our teenagers who completed the entire 10 lesson

curriculum in four days. A special “Thank You” to those who worked in

the following capacities: nightly devotional leaders, lead teachers and

classroom assistants for all age groups, the kitchen staff, hall monitors,

recreation leaders, transportation, registration leaders, arts and crafts

leaders. We also wish to say “Thank You” to those who gave monetary

gifts and to a “Special Group” of our members who provided pizza for

everyone on Thursday night. “Thank You” to Pastor Churn for leading

our opening and closing prayers each evening.

The takeaway from this year’s theme: God has created each of us with

unique gifts and talents. Through our work, we can bring honor to Him,

help others, and play our part in God’s plan for humankind. (scrip. ref.

Ephesians 2:10).

To God be the Glory for the great things He has done.

Men’s Day 2016

HIGH STREET BAPTIST men celebrated Men's Day 2016 with a

week-end of events beginning with a Men's Day Workshop in Fellowship

Hall on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 10:00 am which was conducted by Dr.

J. Elisha Burke, Director of Health Ministries for the Baptist General

Convention of VA. He was also the guest preacher for our 10:30 a.m.

service on Men’s Day, Sunday, July 10, 2016.

THE PREACHER FOR the 3:00 p.m. service was Rev. Kaven V. Smith,

pastor of the Mountain View Baptist Church in Martinsville, VA and he

was accompanied by his outstanding church choir.

THE BROTHERHOOD MINISTRIES would like thank everyone

who made the Men's Day a real glory to God by going over our goal of

$6000.00 by almost $3000.00. To God be the Glory.

Women’s Ministry News

The Women's Ministry will meet for a "Fireside Chat" on Sat. August 27

at 10 am in Fellowship Hall. All women are cordially invited to discuss

the 2016-17 calendar which includes Women's Day.

The Women's Retreat Luncheon is scheduled for Saturday, October 22,

2016 at noon at the Roanoke Country Club. Minister Xelia Hicks from

Danville is the guest speaker.

Back-to-School Celebration

Special Announcement

The Back-to-School Planning Committee is postponing the event planned for August 20, 2016 and revamping plans for

the Annual “Back–to-School” Celebration this year. .

We will plan for a more conducive experience that will benefit the children in the community during the second semester

of their 2016-2017 school year.

We STILL need support in this endeavor, i.e. donations of school supplies, or monetarily (for us to do the shopping)

NOW and over the next several months.

You may contact any member of our organization regarding your planned donation. Checks should be made payable to

As we refresh our Annual “Back-to-School” Community Celebration at the Anchor of Hope Community Center, we need

A High Street “Good Ol’ Days” 2016 Homecoming “Thank you”

“Give me the Good Ol’ Days” was the emphasis at this year’s Homecoming on Sunday, July 24, 2016. Rev. Clarence

McLaughlin, pastor of Bethel Baptist Church, Danville, VA, preached the gospel message and the Bethel Baptist Church

choir provided high praises to God. In addition, 300 plus members, guests and friends were in attendance. Continuing

the theme, a delicious “down home” menu consisting of fried chicken, barbecue, pork slices, hamburgers, hot dogs, cole

slaw, baked beans, green beans, pies and cakes were served in the Anchor of Hope, with its colorful decorations. The ex-

citement of fellowship, food and fun was quite evident.

The Homecoming Chair, Co chair and steering committee members, along with other volunteers, assumed the roles of

cooking, grilling, hosting, decorating and preparing the slices of cakes and pies. The volunteer hostesses who assisted the

choir and visitors—Teresa Parson, Stella Carpenter, and Brenda Lacy. They were great hospitality representatives. The

committee also wants to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to everyone who volunteered in any way, donated food or money.

A “very special thank you” is extended to the awesome food preparers, Dottie & Johnny Chapman and crew; the dessert

crew led by Pat Dunlap; along with the dedicated kitchen clean-up crew consisting of Tina Allredd, Peggy Sue Mason,

Deacon Gracie Board, Anita Price, Poindexter, Janice Taylor, Valerie Hunter, John Epps, Marian Vaughn-Howard and

Marlena Dickerson who remained to clean the kitchen.

It was just another GREAT “Good Ol’ Days Homecoming” at High Street Baptist Church.

Ministry of the Month of August Educational Services Committee

The Educational Services Committee held its formal organizational and planning meeting on Monday, September 9, 1985. The

committee was part of the new and upcoming Anchor of Hope Family/Community Development Center. Two main functions

were developed: a) sponsor tutoring services, and b) sponsor educational and personal enrichment activities for youth and

adults (secure consultants for workshops and seminars, etc.). Dr. Dolores Y. Johns was named Chairperson; the Vice-

chairperson was Betty Lovelace.

FREE TUTORING – The Tutorial Services Coordinators were Linda Johns Ashford and Beulah Dabney. The services

launched October 8, 1985 with 17 volunteer tutors made up of retired and current teachers in the Roanoke City School System,

sorority and fraternity members, as well as, church and community members. The “free” tutorial services were offered for one

and half hours per session, twice a week. The program continued for approximately 20 years serving numerous students from

elementary to college ages in the community.

WORKSHOPS/DISCUSSION GROUPS - The coordinators were Sallye Coleman and Betty Lovelace. The Educational

Services Committee provided free enriching activities which involved professional speakers covering a variety of topics, i.e.

health, politics, finance, estate planning, parent/student college education, reading analysis and much more.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS NIGHT – The original Family and Friends Nights were held twice a month from 5:30 pm to 8:30

pm on Wednesdays. Meal cost was just $2.00 per dinner, commencing at 5:30 pm ending at 6:30 pm. The charge was set in

order to defray the cost of the food; not a fund-raiser. Activities during the night (6:30 pm to 7:30 pm) were held in several

rooms of the church and the Anchor: Fellowship Hall: meal and games, skits, debates, fashion shows, caroling, etc.; Nursery:

babysitting the little ones while parents enjoyed activities; Primary Room: rap sessions, movies, etc.; Assembly Room: children’s

entertainment, storytelling, arts/crafts, etc.; Anchor gym: volleyball, basketball, shuffleboard, aerobics; Ceramic room: board

games, checkers, chess, pottery, etc.; and Library: discussions, guest speakers. Finally, the last hour was reserved for Power

and Prayer Service -7:30 pm to 8:30 pm in the Chapel.

TODAY, Two hour Family and Friends Nights continue quarterly on the third Wednesday of that month, (no activities are

scheduled during the months of June-August) from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Delicious meals, provided by the Food Committee, are

now $3.00 per person which still includes dessert and a drink. Prayer and Power Service remains during the 7:30 to 8:30 pm

hour. After the meal; fun, entertaining and educational programs, full of fellowship are held. Bible Study is held on the other

Wednesdays from 6:30 -7:30 pm.

MEMBERSHIP: All are welcome to join the hard-working Educational Services Committee, chaired by Linda Ashford, and

Vice-Chair Anita Price. Special programs continue to be sponsored by the Committee. Several partnerships have formed, in-

cluding working with the Anchor Board of Directors for the Back-to-School Celebration. Also, other partnerships have been

with the Virginia Cooperative Extension, Roanoke Parks and Recreation, other churches, etc.

PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES- The planned programs continue to provide educational and enrichment activities. Lately, emphasis is

placed on “family” again. Over the years, favorite and very special programs have included:

Volunteer Awards Programs – recognizing Church/Anchor volunteers who have served numerous hours in their given capacity:

Building Committee Members, Building Supervisors, Tutors, Coaches/Recreation Department, Nurse’s Corps, Tour Guides,

Groundskeepers, etc.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Award – given annually since 1991 to a church or community leader who exemplifies living

the “dream” of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Follow the Leader Program – recognizes a few outstanding citizens/or groups in various walks of life including these categories:

Religion, Education, Medicine, Community Services, Sports, the Arts, Music, and high school seniors from High Street Baptist

Church.

AUGUST: National Immunization Awareness Month

How Vaccines Prevent Disease

A vaccine stimulates your immune system to produce antibodies, exactly like it would if you were exposed to the

disease. After getting vaccinated, you develop immunity to that disease, without having to get the disease first. This is

what makes vaccines such powerful medicine. Unlike most medicines, which treat or cure diseases, vaccines prevent

them.

Vaccine Side Effects and Risks

Like any medication, vaccines can cause side effects. Most common side effects are usually mild, such as redness and

swelling at the injection site. These symptoms should go away within a few days. If your child experiences a reaction at

the injection site, one can apply a cool, wet cloth to reduce redness, soreness, and swelling.

Serious side effects following vaccination, such as severe allergic reaction, are very rare and doctors and clinic staff are

trained to deal with them. Pay extra attention to your child for a few days after vaccination to ensure that side effects go

away. If you see something that concerns you, call your child’s doctor.

Vaccine Ingredients

Today, except for some flu vaccines, none of the childhood vaccines used routinely in the United States contain mer-

cury (thimerosal) as a preservative. Although no evidence suggests that there are safety concerns with thimerosal, vac-

cine manufacturers stopped using it as a precautionary measure. Now, it is contained in very tiny amounts only in multi

-dose vials of flu vaccine. Thimerosal is necessary in vaccines that come in multi-dose vials because they require that

each individual vaccine dose be drawn from the vial with a new needle and syringe to minimize introduction of germs

into the vial.

Ensuring Vaccine Safety

The United States' long-standing vaccine safety system ensures that vaccines are as safe as possible. In fact, currently,

the United States has the safest, most effective vaccine supply in its history.

Safety monitoring begins with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), who ensures the safety, effectiveness,

and availability of vaccines for the United States. Before a vaccine is approved by the FDA for use by the public, re-

sults of studies on safety and effectiveness of the vaccine are evaluated by highly trained FDA scientists and doctors.

FDA also inspects the sites where vaccines are made to make sure they follow strict manufacturing guidelines.

Let’s do our part is stamping-out infectious diseases by getting immunized across our lifespan and by

encouraging others to do so!

Vaccines: The Basics

Vaccines contain the same germs that cause disease. (For example, measles vaccine

contains measles virus, and Hib vaccine contains Hib bacteria.) But they have been

either killed or weakened to the point that they don’t make you sick. Some vac-

cines contain only a part of the disease germ.
