FALL 2015
Partners in HealthDear friends,Each fall, we publish a list of Cascade Society members – those who have made gifts to the PeaceHealth Southwest Foundation of $1,000 or more during the previous fiscal year (July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015).
It is heartwarming to see how many people in our community are members of the Cascade Society and contribute $1,000 or
more annually – sometimes much more. Support for this Medical Center remains strong with cumulative giving in FY ’15 of $4.5 million.
What is even more heartwarming, however, is the impact that these contributions are having on our patients and programs. To mention just a few of the projects that donor support helped make possible:
n A new kitchen for the Ray Hickey Hospice House
n Aid for low-income veterans seeking mental health assistance
n Childbirth and breastfeeding classes for pregnant women
n Printed materials for the chaplaincy program
n Health Career Scholarships for the next generation of medical professionals
The single largest recipient of gift funding last year, however, was our Neurosciences Program.
In February 2014, we determined to raise $10.5 million over a three-year period to help make our brain and spine care among the best in the region. To date, we have raised $6.9 million – so we are right on target.
All that remains is to raise $3.6 million to fund a total renovation of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit on 4West of the Mother Joseph Building.
On the cover of this issue is a photo of Dr. Jaime Nicacio and Julie Dromgoole, two of the outstanding caregivers who staff the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. The skill and commitment of our caregivers, coupled with a state-of-the-art space will enable our neuro rehabilitation patients to survive and thrive!
Thank you, as always, for your friendship and support. Your continuing commitment to the Medical Center’s patients and programs is deeply appreciated.
Gratefully,
Carol Van Natta Executive Director

Introducing Janis Wyatt President, PHSW Foundation Board
The PeaceHealth Southwest Foundation has been exceedingly fortunate in its volunteer leaders over the years, and current president, Janis Wyatt, is no exception.
“Janis is a tremendous asset to the Foundation,” says Carol Van Natta, executive director. “We anticipate making great progress with her as president for the next two years.”
Janis, now retired, worked for many years in banking and then ran her own investment firm. Her husband, Dan, is a successful entrepreneur with roots in the trucking industry.
She was raised in Seattle and Dan came from Texas, but both are deeply committed to the Vancouver community where they have lived for many years. They have two children and four grandchildren, all of whom live in the Vancouver area. Their son, Dan, owns the Kiggins Theater in downtown Vancouver.
“The Foundation staff feels blessed to work with Janis,” says Van Natta. “She combines all the traits of an ideal board president—generosity of time and talents, as well as persistence and flexibility. Plus, she has a great sense of humor.”
Peace of Mind GalaCompletes Jay D. Miller, MD Neurosciences Caregiver Education Endowment
The Peace of Mind Gala took place on Saturday, September 19th and was the final piece of the fundraising puzzle for the $1 million Jay D. Miller, MD, Neurosciences Caregiver Education Endowment. Presented by Riverview Community Bank, the event raised more than $335,000 to complete the Miller Endowment, thanks to the generosity of 500 guests and additional donors.
The funds raised will ensure the best continuing education, support and training for the nurses, therapists and clinicians who care for patients affected by stroke, brain injury and degenerative neurological diseases.
Gala Chairs Terry Prill and Sandra Young, along with committee members Linda Angelo, Patti Bishop, Joan Cavanagh, Jaime Miller, Doreen Robinson, Jennifer Werdel and Janis Wyatt, created a beautiful event at the Vancouver Hilton. The evening included an exciting live auction and a tremendous paddle raise. Thank you to the sponsors and donors to Peace of Mind!

New and Improved Inpatient Physical Rehab Unit on the HorizonThe Final Phase of the Campaign for Neurosciences Excellence
Dr. Jaime Nicacio, Medical Director, Rehabilitation Services, and Julie Dromgoole, Clinical Manager, are eagerly awaiting the creation of the new inpatient physical rehabilitation unit. “Julie and I have been a team for more than a decade, and we’ve got a great program and great clinicians,” said Dr. Nicacio. “However, better facilities will significantly improve our patients’ experiences as well as shorten recovery times.”
With fundraising complete for both Phases 1 and 2 of the Campaign — the Thomas and Sandra Young Neurosciences Center and the Jay Miller Endowment, we are shifting our fundraising efforts to the refurbishment and remodel of the Inpatient Physical Rehabilitation Unit.
This, the third and final phase of the campaign, features our largest fundraising goal — $6 million. This critical component will provide an enhanced and restorative healing space for patients recovering from neuro-related issues such as stroke, brain injuries, spinal surgery, car accidents and many others.
The unit will feature private patient rooms, a therapy gym for the very best physical and occupational therapy, and an upgraded dining room where patients and families will share meals and prepare for life at home. A beautiful outdoor therapy garden will provide opportunities for patients and their families to take a break from treatment while remaining in a medically supervised environment.
The average length of stay on the unit is two weeks. The expansion will offer healing and hope for the hundreds of patients and their families who are served annually as they develop the new skills necessary to resume their lives.
An Ambassador’s Final Gift Carries His Inspiring Spirit Forward
For further information, or to arrange a tour of the unit, please contact Dawn Johnston at 360-514-3656 or [email protected].
Dave Roberts, May 1978 – June 2014, gave more than 1,400 volunteer hours and made a planned gift in his will to benefit neurosciences patients at PeaceHealth Southwest.
Fall 2015 5
At age 25, David (Dave) Roberts received the news nobody wants at any age…he had a brain tumor. While recuperating from the subsequent brain surgery, Dave suffered a stroke.
Despite these challenges, Dave made a habit of giving back. He began volunteering in 2008 as a stroke ambassador at PeaceHealth Southwest, enthusiastically supporting other stroke survivors.
Dave died at age 36 at our Ray Hickey Hospice House due to the brain tumor’s recurrence. A generous $10,000 donation he left in his estate will help refurbish and expand our Inpatient Physical Rehabilitation Unit.
“Dave was the eternally smiling optimist and a part of our family,” said Louise Jenkins, manager of the stroke program. “His enthusiasm for life was contagious and lives on.”
Dr. Jaime Nicacio, Medical Director, Rehabilitation Services, and Julie Dromgoole, Clinical Manager
Brian Olsen, Jeff Firstenburg, Scott Wilcox and tournament organizer Marnette Wilcox celebrate another successful event to benefit the Campaign for Neurosciences Excellence.
Endless Summer Cruise-In
The Northwest Corvette Association designated our Ray Hickey Hospice House as one of the beneficiaries of their fundraising through the Endless Summer Cruise-In, and donated $3,000 to support hospice patients and families.

September's third annual OEG Golf Tournament raised vital funds in support of the Campaign for Neurosciences Excellence. The tournament committee, headed by Foundation Board Member Keith Knight, has committed to raising $250,000 over five years to support neurosciences excellence in southwest Washington.
Pink Brigade Guys put the fun in fundraising while supporting the Kearney Breast Center.
Coffee for a CureThe 10th annual Coffee for a Cure on October 23rd, hosted by The Human Bean, raised $2,131 for Kearney Breast Center patients and programs. Our thanks to Brian Magnussen and the great staff at the Human Bean on Fourth Plain in east Vancouver.
Many thanks to the generous and creative community partners who help raise vital funds in support of our patients and programs at PeaceHealth Southwest! If you are interested in supporting excellence in local medicine, contact Alison Lazareck at 360-514-3634 or [email protected].

Hospice Donors Enhance End of Life Care for Our Community Bereavement Retreat Named for Jim and Kay McClaskey
Since 2008, Vancouver philanthropists James (Jim) and Catherine (Kay) McClaskey have generously funded the annual three-day retreat that helps children and their families deal with
the death of loved ones. Because of their outright gifts and a planned estate gift, future retreats will bear their names beginning with the August 2016 event.
“Jim and Kay’s incredible financial support enables numerous grieving families to attend our Stepping Stones bereavement retreat. They touch the heart of every person who comes to the retreat. They’re our superheroes,” said Jodi Wicks, bereavement retreat manager.
Ray Hickey Foundation Helps Complete Hospice House Kitchen
The late Ray Hickey’s desire to provide the best end of life care for patients and families continues through his family’s and his foundation’s continued support. The Ray Hickey Foundation recently made a $60,000 gift to help complete the kitchen remodel and expansion at Hickey House, ensuring that patients get the food they want when they want it.
“Ray’s legacy lives on,” said Carol Van Natta, Foundation executive director. “We are grateful to Ray’s daughter, Linda Rae Hickey, and to the Ray Hickey Foundation for this capstone gift for Hickey House, which is a jewel in our community.”
“And when his daughter Linda Rae asked if we wanted his desk, we jumped at the opportunity,” says Van Natta. “It’s so special to know that part of Ray’s history is in daily use at our Ray Hickey Hospice House.”
Ray Hickey Hospice House Garden Named in Honor of Estate DonorThe garden at the Ray Hickey Hospice House will be named for David and the late Helen Frink in honor of their significant estate commitment. Income from a foundation the Frinks are creating through their estate will benefit the Hickey House in perpetuity, providing annual support for the House’s patients and programs.
David and Helen believed that giving back was important and have always had charitable provisions in their estate plan. Since Helen was so well cared for by PeaceHealth‘s hospice program, David wanted to include it in his charitable giving.
“The Frinks’ generosity is truly exceptional. We are delighted to name the beautiful garden in honor of them, and only wish that Helen was still alive to enjoy this recognition,“ says Sonjia Houser, manager of Hickey House.
Ray Hickey Hospice House volunteer Carol Gustafson serves patients and families from the desk that philanthropist Ray Hickey used at Tidewater Barge Lines and the Ray Hickey Foundation. Ray, who died in 2010, gave the lead gift to build Hickey House.
Annual Report2015 By the NumbersThank you for helping provide the best in local medical excellence by contributing during the 2015 fiscal year (July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015).
