Thirty-seven students from the Cherry Creek School District areamong 16,000 students nationwide who have been named 2012National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists by the National MeritScholarship Corporation (NMSC). These academically talentedhigh school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competi-tion for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than$34 million, which will be awarded next spring. The Cherry CreekSchool District National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists are: From Cherry Creek High School

From Grandview High SchoolEmily BaadeJacquelyn CombellickSteven Hays

From Smoky Hill High SchoolKelsey CrockerYangzi HeThe 16,000 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists were

selected from 1.5 million high school juniors who took the 2010Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test(PSAT/NMSQT). The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which rep-resents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includesthe highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number ofSemifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage ofthe national total of graduating seniors. Semifinalists must fulfillseveral requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the compe-tition. They must have an outstanding academic record throughouthigh school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school prin-cipal and earn SAT scores that confirm the students earlier perform-ance on the qualifying test. The Semifinalist and a high schoolofficial must submit a detailed scholarship application, whichincludes the student’s essay and information about the student’s par-ticipation and leadership in school and community activities. About90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist stand-ing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a NationalMerit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title. 2012 NationalMerit Scholarship winners will be announced next spring.2011-2012 BREAK DATES

Weatherization Services Available To Low-Income Households

Arapahoe County program lowers heating bills with energy-efficiency measures. As winter storms arrive early to the FrontRange, many already-struggling families will face even higherheating costs this season. Many households that have historicallyrelied on Colorado‚s LEAP program for energy assistance willnot be eligible this year, due to a decrease in federal funding andstricter income guidelines. However, another County programcan help low-income households reduce their energy use andcosts, not just for a season, but for the long-term.

The Arapahoe County Weatherization Division, in partnershipwith the Governor’s Energy Office, can perform a free home ener-gy audit and provide energy conservation services for low-incomehouseholds in both Arapahoe and Adams Counties. The programcan serve single-family homes, mobile homes and multi-familyunits up to a four-plex for residences that are rented or owned.

Weatherization services by a qualified crew may include seal-ing major air leaks; adding insulation to attics; walls and crawlspaces; performing health and safety tests on furnaces and waterheaters; making necessary repairs to furnaces and water heaters;and installing high-efficiency compact fluorescent light bulbs, allat no cost.

“The best way to lower your energy bills is to make lastingefficiency improvements to your home” said Arapahoe CountyCommissioner Frank Weddig. “We know that many householdscannot afford to invest in energy-efficient appliances, insulationor other measures, and we’re pleased to offer the free federalweatherization program to eligible citizen.”
