Dear Emmaus Brothers and Sisters,It’s almost time. You know what I mean. It’s almost time to see two moregroups of pilgrimshave a chance to experience God’s grace and love up close and personal.These two groups ofpilgrims on TW120 and TW121 will soon be standing where we have allstood before. We allremember our Thursday night when we were nervous, anxious, and many ofus ready to getback at our sponsors for asking us to attend this Walk to Emmaus. We alsoremember ourSunday evening when all that nervousness and anxiety were long forgottenand we couldn’tlove our sponsors more than at that time for asking us to attend this Walk toEmmaus. It’samazing how a short period of time focusing on Christ can change our wholeperspective on lifeand even on ourselves. Many of us didn’t realize we were capable of havingstrong faith andlove for our Lord until we came face-to-face with it on our weekends. It issuch a joy to see thaton other’s faces as they take that 3 day journey with our Savior. Just like itsays in the scripture,their hearts are burning with the love and grace of Christ.



I hope each of you will come to be a part of these upcoming two amazingweekends. There areopportunities to serve, opportunities to pray, and opportunities to show thatyou are the faceof Christ. If you are sponsoring someone, you probably have already felt thejoy that bringingothers to Christ can offer. If you are teaming, you know that working withothers on a commongoal is incredibly rewarding. If you plan to be part of community support, thatfeeling of beinga part of something much bigger than yourself never goes away. If you arepart of the prayervigil, those words offered to our God can make a difference in the lives of thepilgrims and evenyou own. It’s never a bad time to converse with our Lord.So as the days grow closer, please plan to be a part of these weekends insome fashion. Youcan come to send-off and show your support. You can come to candlelightand show that smilethat only Jesus can put on your face. You can come to closing and hear theincredible witnessthat these new 4 th Day pilgrims will provide. And above all else, take sometime to rememberyour walk. Remember how you saw the faces of others and just how terrificthat made youfeel. Pass that feeling on to others. They in turn will pass it on to futurepilgrims. The circlenever ends and the Kingdom just keeps getting bigger. Coming home to Tidewater Emmaus is such a blessing! I have beenaway from this community for several years, and it is refreshing torekindle old acquaintances and make new friends among thisEmmaus family. I walked on TW 39 and sat at the table of theNight Lights. (clap!) I’ve had the privilege of serving both Chrysalisand Emmaus weekends and Boards, and as WLD’s of both andCLD’s of both! Some might call me an “old buffalo” and I would be



honored! I’ve sponsored quite a few folks, young and old, and try tokeep up with them as the years go by. Enough about me.May I share with you some observations I have made in the last 8 orso months of being part of this community again? Like mostEmmaus communities with which I am familiar, this one has beenin a people slump. We see communities canceling walk weekendsbecause there just aren’t enough pilgrims. Teams go throughseveral months of team meetings, preparing talks, gainingmomentum for the weekend, then the bad news that the weekendhas been canceled just bursts everyone’s bubbles. Are we reallydoing the job we need to be doing in prayerfully sponsoring folks? I’m fairly certain every single one of us has one person we knowwould gain so much from the walk experience. Let’s pray, reallypray, about that.Secondly, there is a fresh wind blowing in the last few months thatwasn’t there for a while. Do you think that just maybe the HolySpirit is moving through this community in a new way? The“ruach” is the breath of God. The same breath that moved acrossthe waters of creation. The same breath that God breathed into thehuman he created. The same breath that gave you and me life. John 3:6-8 says, “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear thesound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Let’s pray, really pray,about that.Finally, there is an undercurrent of joy about to bubble up in thiscommunity! The Bible has much to say about joy. Joy is a fruit ofthe Spirit, and is ours for the claiming. Joy is a choice we makeevery day. Let’s choose joy. The world needs to see Christians whoare joyful. Let’s pray, really pray, about that.May I invite you to covenant with me to prayer about sponsoringand teaming, being filled with and led by the Holy Spirit, andintentionally choosing to be a person of joy? Romans 15:13 says,“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, sothat you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Thisis my prayer for you today. De Colores! “Why Settle for Instant Potatoes When We’ve Got Real Ones?” Our faith as Christians hinges on a principle that goes againsteverything rational. Faith is belief in that which we are unable to see.Case in point: on the first Easter, when the other disciples told Thomasthey had seen the risen Christ, Thomas refused to believe it. Their storyjust didn't fit into Thomas' field of expertise, which was an experience-based understanding of life. Anything that laid outside of his direct sightof vision, or for that matter, even out of his touch; did not nor could notexist. Thomas could only process belief through what he saw andthrough what he could touch. His belief was limited by the narrowperimeters in which he could experience and interpret life. To simplyhear that Jesus was alive was not enough to convince him that Jesus wasreally alive. If he couldn't see Jesus with his own eyes and touch thewounds on Jesus' hands and side; that is, make the claim match thepatterns of reality with which Thomas was familiar — then the accountof his companions could not be believed. We too, are often blinded by our experience. Experience is oftencolored by what we bring to it, by our culture, our training, and by ourupbringing. For example, a mother always used an instant mixwhenever she made mashed potatoes. Her son grew up thinking that'swhat everybody did. Then when he got married, he witnessed for thefirst time his wife fixing mashed potatoes, not from a box, but fromscratch. She actually peeled and cut up real potatoes. He looked at themcooking on the stove and said, "Why go to all that work? Just useinstants." But when they sat down to eat, he found the real mashed potatoesdelicious and finally understood that there had been a gap in hisculinary experience. Such are the limitations of experience. Likewise,when Jesus comes to Thomas, he’s not merely offering instant potatobuds; he’s offering Thomas a whole new way of experiencing reality.Even though Jesus begins where Thomas is at; presenting himself toThomas through Thomas’ conventional approach (the holding out hishands and giving Thomas permission to touch them). But by this pointThomas is experiencing the real thing; he no longer needs to touch thewounds. Thomas, like the other disciples, as a whole new taste in hismouth. Thomas’ experience assures me that this is what Easter is allabout! Why settle for instant potatoes when we’ve got real ones?

We need 21 peopleper team and we like to pick 1/3 from First time teamers,1/3 2-3 time teamers, and 1/3 seasoned teamers.
