September 2011
Dear Friends,
As a New Year approaches, we are called to reflect upon our lives and remember those who have played an important role in whom we are today.
Here at the JCC we also look at who we are and how we can serve our community and membership most effectively. There is always room to expandin new directions.
May this New Year 5772 bring us continued good health, Peace on Earth and a renewed commitment to our Staten Island Jewish Community.
The Staff and Board wish you and your families L’Shanah Tovah.
Susan Sappin President of the Board

ROSH HASHANAH
Of the 10 major Jewish holidays observed, a 10 day period called the "Days ofAwe" stands out as the most important and holiest of our holidays. Beginning withRosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and concluding with Yom Kippur, the timeperiod offers Jews an opportunity to reflect on past actions and how they might beimproved in the future.
Through reflection and soul searching, we are asking God to inscribe for us an-other year in His Book of Life, which is opened before Him on Rosh Hashanah andclosed on Yom Kippur. The greeting phrase L'shannah Tovah Tikatevu, whichmeans "May you be inscribed for a good year", illustrates the meaning of thissolemn holiday which Jews celebrate by attending religious services and spendingtime with their families.
Customs passed down for generations go hand in hand with holidays and furtherserve to carry out the meaning of the observance. The woman of the house ushersin the observance of the holiday by lighting festive candles as she recites the specialblessings. The table is set as for the Sabbath with the addition of a plate of slicedapples and a dish of honey, symbolic of the hope that "the year be a sweet one".
The blowing of the Shofar, a ram's or sheep's horn, signaled the Jewish peopleof danger and called them together in ancient days. Today, when the Shofar sounds,Jews recall all the sadness in the world and hope for a better year to come.

YOM KIPPUR
Yom Kippur, the most solemn day of Atonement, is regarded as the Sabbath of
Sabbaths, the most sacred day of the year, for on this day the heavenly judgement,
first entered on Rosh Hashanah, is sealed and made final. It is also known as the
"white fast", because, unlike the "black fast", Tishah b'Av, it is not a day of mourn-
ing but a day spent divorced from all earthly and physical concerns, concentrated
instead on self-examination and prayer.
A festive meal is served in the late afternoon, before the fast begins. Honey is
served as part of the meal. Many serve a fish dish as a symbol of plenty in the com-
ing year It is customary to light a yahrzeit candle as a memorial to the deceased
members of the family, just before leaving for services. Holiday candles are also
lit either at home or at the synagogue upon arrival there.
Just before leaving for synagogue on the eve of Yom Kippur, many families fol-
low the custom of having the children gather together so that the parents may bless
them. The Sabbath and the Priestly Blessing are used, and also a special blessing
for Yom Kippur.
The ancient chant of Kol Nidre, intoned all over the world as the sun goes down
on Yom Kippur eve, has an almost hypnotic fascination for anyone with even min-
imal Jewish identification. It embodies centuries of persecution, redemption and re-
newal, and is one of the most dramatic moments in the services. It is recited just
before sundown. All the Torahs are taken from the Ark and arranged on the bimah
in recognition of the solemnity of the thrice-repeated abrogation of all vows made
under duress or emotional strain, all oaths unfulfilled because of some negligence
or inability.
