Fellow Legionnaires & Members of Post 91,Well it’s summer and a lot of events have happened and will continue through the rest of the summer. We celebrated Memorial Day, starting in front of the Post with a flag ceremony, then to Adams Cemetery, Woodvale Cemetery, the parade, and then our annual Memorial Day ceremony in McKelvey Park in downtown Berea. All those events happened between 8:00 am and noon.

June 14 was Flag Day and we had our annual flag disposal ceremony at 7:00 pm. It is by far my favorite ceremony of the year. There was margarita night and 4th of July. Check your calendars for upcoming events for August and September.

We started and finished the kitchen and it turned out great. My sincere thanks to Mel Baher, George Masie, Ralph “Rocky” Rokowski, Brian Daberkow, Rich Schaedler and a cast of thousands for all that they did in making this happen.

The Post received 4 awards at the American Legion Convention, Exemplary support of the Gifts for Yanks, largest percent of goal for membership of 500-999 of 7,635.76 %, (the goal is $2 per member), largest contribution for membership of 500-999, of $12,621.91, and 14 consecutive years of All Time High for increasing membership beyond the goal that is set by the American Legion. Congratulations to all the members who made this possible and my hat off to Don “Flash” Vaji for his outstanding job. The work party for August is the 20th, which is the 3rd Saturday, due to the James C. Masie Memorial Golf Outing on the 13th. Remember anyone can sign up for the work party. We can use the help. If given the chance, thank a Vet.

For God and Country,Tony Mazzeo

MEMoRiEsI was talking with one of our few remaining WWII vets and he relayed an interesting and heart warming story which probably could not happen today and I asked him to share it with our members. After reading this you will understand why they are truly the “Greatest Generation”

Here are Robert L. “Robbie” Robinson’s favorite memories in his own words; he served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1946.

Serving in any branch of the United States military is an exacting job but it is also rewarding and an honor. Such service cannot be called fun although there can be those lighter moments too. Any person who has served in a combat zone during a war knows, to say it is no fun, is a gross understatement. Many difficult memories come from those times but, even so, there can be some good memories.

During our liberation of Holland from the Germans I met a family, a man, wife and 14 year old daughter. As the war proceeded and our unit pushed on through Holland, Germany and central Europe, I corresponded with them, as time permitted, and I also put my own family and fiancé in touch with them. I still correspond with his daughter (now a grandmother) and I have visited them in Holland (1942 and 1945) and she and her husband visited me in the U.S. in 1946, So this has provided me with a good memory from WWII.

At the end of the war in Europe, I rescued a two month old German Sheppard puppy running loose on the streets in Bamberg, Germany. She (I named her Dusty) was skinny and scared but after getting her fed, she calmed down and I was able to keep her with me during the rest of my time in Europe. Since the war was over, my daily routine was less demanding so I could spend time in training Dusty.

When it came time for me to be returned to U.S. for discharge, I was able to arrange, at LeHavre, France for Dusty to be shipped to my parent’s home in Lansing, Michigan and she beat me home.

After returning home, I married my Junior High School sweetheart and Dusty was a constant companion for my wife as well as for my son and daughter after they were born. She was a great dog and made many appearances at schools and other organizations. In 1951 she was featured on a television show called “Animal Fare” in Toledo and Detroit. She lived 14+ years, I think happily.

Dusty loved people, especially children, but she always remained “my dog”. What a fond memory this has been for me through the years.

American Legion Auxiliary g Officers Notes (continued from page 4)

Nancy Doutt, Membership Chairman- The membership cards have arrived and we will start processing 2012 dues on August 1. Because we reached our goal for 2011, they are increasing our goal for 2012 so we will have to work harder to retain current members and recruit new ones. Your participation in the women’s largest veterans’ volunteer organization is the best advertisement we have. Keep up the good work! National is considering a dues increase with the 2013 dues, but for 2012, they remain the same for both Senior and Junior members---$25.00 for Seniors and $5.00 for Juniors. The Juniors do not receive a notice from the Department of Ohio, so if you sponsor a Junior, you can include their dues with yours, and you do not need to wait for your dues notice to pay for 2012 dues. Early bird gets the sticker before November 11. THANK YOU!

District and Department Program RecognitionCongratulations, Unit 91! As a follow-up to receiving 1st place in the five major categories of Americanism, Children & Youth, Community Service, Junior Activities, and Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation (VA&R) in our member group in our District, we received the following certificates at the Department of Ohio convention:

Certificates of Appreciation and Merit for our donation and efforts for the Auxiliary Emergency Fund.•Certificate of Merit for the best District Chaplain narrative, Children & Youth report, Community Service, National •Security, Poppy , VA&R, and Legislative.Certificates of Appreciation for participation in the National Security Handmade Afghan Project.•

This is a tribute to the power of each and every one of our members. Thank you!

Wade Park VisitAfter our February visit to Wade Park VA Hospital, we received several thank you notes from the Veterans. We were accompanied by four very respectful young ladies from Parma Park Church of God. Here are notes from three of the Veterans.

Thank you to all the young ladies who came to the VA Hospital 2/28/11. You were beautiful with lots of cheer, smiles, heart and love. We received goody bags, duct tape bags, a candy box, afghan and all with smiles. You made us speechless. Thank you for your heartfelt love.

Your gifts to my husband who is an ongoing in and out patient of Wade Park VA hospital was very much appreciated and very thoughtful. Dave was thrilled to receive the lap robe and the goody bag. He is a cancer patient and your prayers are necessary to his health and upcoming treatment. Keep us in your prayers—they help us keep hoping. Thank you and God Bless.

Timing is everything—let me explain... Had I joined the Navy earlier or later, I would not have been stationed in Norfolk, Virginia;•When I volunteered for a trip to Vietnam I was sent on an ammunition ship that went through the Panama Canal, to •Hawaii and, when I did see Vietnam it was from a distance while at sea; When I went to the VA Hospital in February of 2011, I saw the snowstorm then rainstorm through a window (never •had to drive through either); When I was at the VA Hospital, a group of ladies from the American Legion Auxiliary and the Parma Park Church of •God Young Ladies Ministries visited the 4th floor and said “Thank you for Serving Our Country”; and while visiting us you all had genuine smiles; and while visiting us you passed out gifts, all beautiful and most hand made; and I was the first person from the Navy that you met that night so you gave me a Navy cap; and (here’s how good your timing was) you left my room and alone together with my wife, we wiped away a tear or two;You stayed on the 4th floor long enough for me to find you and take a picture. •Yes, I’m home now, feeling much better and I put your picture inside that Navy cap so anytime I wear it I can look •and remember the reason why I joined and who said “Thanks”.

By the reading of this newsletter, we will have gone again on July 25. This time, the patients from Brecksville VA will have already been moved to Wade Park. If you are interested in joining us for our fall visit, please contact Nancy at (440) 552-4713.

Post 91’s Boys state Participant Has An Exceptional Week At Boys state

Alejandro returned from Buckeye Boys State with awards and stories to last a lifetime. Berea should be proud of him. First, he was elected County Engineer. The state they created had 8 counties and the kids elected to this position had to take a test on the subject to prove their knowledge. Alejandro had by far the highest score on the test and impressed the Legionnaires and his peers. For this reason he was offered the highest distinction there was, which is to be offered the chance to move on to Boys Nation in Washington, a position offered to only 2 boys, out of more than 1200. Alejandro was first pick for Boys Nation, but had to respectfully decline due to his scheduled program at OSU. He was torn but had to make a choice, His County won best county award, his City won best city award. Alejandro won “Outstanding Citizen” award and was offered to come back as a counselor next year, to which he agreed.

Sincerely,

Grisselle ChockA proud Mom

Editor g Post By The Lake

Ron Fazekas, Editor- Here is an e-mail I received the other day and really fits on what these environmental wackos forgot about how we grew up.

In the line at the store, the cashier told an older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment.

The woman apologized to her and explained, “We didn’t have the green thing back in my day.”

The clerk responded, “That’s our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment.” She was right -- our generation didn’t have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn’t have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks.

But she was right. We didn’t have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby’s diapers because we didn’t have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right; we didn’t have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana.

In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us.

When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, we didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she’s right; we didn’t have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water.

We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But we didn’t have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service.

We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn’t it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn’t have the green thing back then?

Please forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smartass young person.
