Neutron Stars

What Is A Neutron Star?
• A Star made entirely out of neutrons• Remains of stars that had btw 1.4
and 9 times the mass of out sun
What Do They Do?
• After a star goes nova:– Remaining core collapses–Outer layers blasted into space Result
of Nebula– Gravity condenses the core to about 25
km in diameter in a few seconds***It’s so dense, a pinhead’s worth of
material can weigh as much as a supertanker!!!!
Why is it able to shrink?
• Electro-Magnetic Force (EM) :- Keeps electrons out of the atom’s nucleus
• Star’s mass and gravity is able to overcome EM force
• In the brief seconds EM force is broken, then electrons and protons are combined.
What’s Inside?
• Simple main three layers:- Solid core- “Liquid” mantel- Thin solid crust
Axis
• TWO Axis:-Magnetic -Rotational
Which brings us to…..
Pulsar
• Same thing as a neutron star with one added feature:-Emits 2 high-energy beams, concentrated along magnetic axis
• Beams made of material stolen from companion star– Particles accelerated to
speeds as 20% the speed of light!!!!
