• We are designing and building the superconducting magnet for the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS).
Space Cryomagnetics
•AMS will be the FIRST large superconducting magnet in space.
•It will carry the LARGEST inventory of liquid helium ever launched.
•It was the FIRST experiment manifest on the International Space Station.
Space Cryomagnetics
• The AMS magnet has a diameter of nearly 3 metres and weighs more than 2 tonnes.
• The magnet generates a field of 3 T at a temperature of 25 K.
• The HTS coils reduce the overall power consumption of the system from 200 to 12 kW.

• Manufacturing capable of quantity e.g. Tesla have supplied a one off batch of 350 twin bore magnets to CERN.

• W7-X magnet for fusion – crown shaped coils 4m in size – Metrology of large structures difficult for firms helped in this by Culham laboratory.
