Interschools Chess ChampionshipCongratulations to the four students who represented Neutral Bay Public School in the Sydney North Regional Interschool Chess Championship last week. The students took pride in their membership of the group and excelled in the competition, placing them as Sydney North Regional Champions. The team have progressed to play Beecroft Public School in the next stage of the NSW State Chess Championship. Good luck to our team members Chelsea, Darien, Vanessa and Anton.

Tell Them From Me SurveyThis term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, which is another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 26 August - 25 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

If you have information relating to your child’s class placement of which you feel we need to be made aware, please advise the school by completing the following form. School Planning 2020.

It should be noted that while we will take this information into consideration when forming classes, not all requests will be met, owing to the many factors that need to be considered when forming classes.

This link will remain live until Friday 25 October 2019 and be advertised in the newsletter until that date. Please kindly note that the school will not be able to consider 2020 class placement requests after that time.

Our warm congratulations to Liam H (4A) and Saoirse N (5T) for placing third in their respective divisions of the Premier’s Spelling Bee Regional Final, held at Castle Cove Public School on Wednesday 11 September.

The Premier’s Spelling Bee, held since 2004, is designed to improve the literacy skills of NSW primary school students. It encourages students to develop a love of spelling, learn new words and explore the English language.

More than 400 students at Neutral Bay Public School competed in this year’s competition. Junior spellers had to correctly spell words such as meteorology, discrepancy and souvlaki, while senior students were challenged with words such as infinitesimal, extemporaneous and tagliatelle.

We’re proud of having such excellent spellers at Neutral Bay.

OrienteeringEamon represented Neutral Bay at the NSW Schools Orienteering Championships last weekend. The competition was held in the Southern Highlands this year, and consisted of a Sprint Championships on Saturday and a Distance Championships on Sunday. Overall, it was a fantastic event full of challenging navigation, quick decision-making and fast running!

Eamon raced well, and won two silver medals, placing second in the 10 years boys division, in both the State Sprint and Distance Championships! He was very proud to represent the school. Well done Eamon!

Reconciliation Action Plan

Fruit & Veg Month 2019

Our school has registered for Fruit & Veg Month 2019.

The theme for this year is ‘The Adventures of Captain Fruit N Veg!’ It's all

about linking eating fruit and vegetables with good times, superheroes, superpowers and adventures!

Fruit & Veg Month 2019 runs for the last 4 weeks of Term 3, Monday 2nd to

Friday 27th September.

As part of Fruit & Veg Month, students will be involved in various classroom and school based activities which encourage them to eat more fruit and

vegetables.

Miss Brooke Saltmarsh Fruit & Veg Month School Coordinator

Fruit & Veg Month

We are pleased to inform you that Neutral Bay Public School has committed to developing a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Our RAP aims to support our school community in developing an educational environment that fosters higher levels of knowledge and pride in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and contributions. Through our RAP, we will commit to strengthening relationships, respect and opportunities in the classroom, around the school and with the community.

Developing our RAP is a long-term commitment that will require ongoing consideration and collaborative effort. Within our community, there is unique knowledge and valuable experience that we would love to see reflected in the Actions that we commit to in our RAP. Therefore, to ensure our RAP creates meaningful and sustainable change, we would like to seek your support. This letter is a call to action for parents, carers and community members to express their interest in helping to drive our RAP development and implementation journey.

If you would like to be involved in any way with the development and ongoing implementation of our RAP, including being part of the RAP Working Group, please get in touch with me via email, [email protected], by the end of Week 2 in Term 4 (25.10.19) to discuss further.

Kindergarten News Stage 1 News (Years 1 & 2)

Mrs A. Stewart & Mrs R. Vaccarella - KSV Class Teachers

K-2 enjoyed the Athletics Carnival on Friday. We were lucky that the sun shone, after a cloudy looking morning. Kindergarten children especially enjoyed their first carnival. Here are some photos of KSV having lots of fun!

Last week, 1M, along with the rest of Year 1, started collecting information for our ‘Information Reports’ English Unit of Work. We began by defining the difference between a fact and an opinion. Next, we watched a video to gain a deeper understanding about the life of sharks.

“Did you know that most sharks are carnivores?” – A fact that JJ shared.

We then categorised information into groups such as habitat, appearance, diet and movement. Together as a class, we built up a bank of words that we think will be useful when we begin writing our information reports. We used ‘Epic Books’ to find informative texts from ‘National Geographic’.

We had a wonderful end to the week at the K-2 sports day. It was exciting to have the opportunity to participate in races and games, and more importantly, cheer on our peers throughout the day. We all felt like ‘Tank the Turtle’ and demonstrated resilience.

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4) SRC NewsDesign Challenge Year 3 Living World Unit:

After exploring and investigating living things this term, Year 3 were given the task of creating a design solution to improve/support the growth of a living thing in their playground.

3D as a class, worked on designing and building sustainable bird feeders. These needed to hang from a branch, hold seeds, allow the bird to perch and for the product to hold the bird’s weight. Lastly, the bird feeder could only be made from either natural or recycled materials. 3D will be working on their designs until the end of the term.

If you see any hanging around the school and notice more birds in the playground let us know!

The SRC have been busy behind the scenes collecting plastic bottle caps and bread tags. Please bring them into 6P by 27 September!

The SRC has also organised Jeans for Genes Day for the last day of term! Please wear denim jeans and bring in a gold coin donations!

P&C News

Halloween CarnivalIt is with much excitement that the P&C will be putting on a Halloween Carnival on Thursday 31 October, from 4.00pm-9.00pm. Bydown Street will be closed and there will be rides, food stalls and variety stalls.

Wristbands and tokens will be on sale before the end of this term. There will be rides and attractions for all. The younger ones will also benefit with a wristband, as not only does the wristband include all the rides, but it also includes the inflatable rides, petting zoo, 9D cinema and ride on animals. All tickets are non-refundable.

Lucky Wheel PrizesPrize and gift donations to the Halloween Carnival stall. Lucky Wheel prizes. It’s the new name for an old favourite (the chocolate wheel)

This year, the P&C is unfortunately not having a second-hand book stall as storage and space is limited.

Do you have any new unwanted toys/ gifts etc for the hugely popular Lucky Wheel? We are looking for donations of NEW prizes to the value of $5 and upwards, for example:

• Sporting equipment (balls, novelty sport items)• Beauty (soaps, hair decorations and jewellery)• Stationery (novelty paper, pens, coloured pencils,

craft items)• Boys’ toys (K-Yr2) or (Yr3-Yr6)• Girls’ toys (K-Yr2) or (Yr3-Yr6)

Please leave them in the specially marked lucky wheel boxes in the School Office.

Last week, there was a small clear cello bag that went home with every child in the school. This is for the lucky dip stall at the Halloween Carnival. If every family can please buy a small gift worth at least $3 and then return it sealed back to school, either to your child's teacher or place it in the lucky dip prize box in the school office. We have had to use cello bags instead of paper as we need to be able to see through it when sorting into boys/girls or unisex, rather than opening 1000 paper bags. However, whilst cello bags can't be recycled they are completely biodegradable as they are derived from natural sources such as wood and are better than plastic bags.

This is a very popular stall which the children love and it's affordable for them, so please remember to buy something when you do your grocery shopping.

Lucky Dip StallIf every family can please buy a small gift worth at least $3 and then return it back to school, either to your child's teacher or place it in the lucky dip prize box in the school office.

• Please place a new item in the cello bag provided to your child, worth at least $3.

• Return the sealed bag with prize into the Lucky Dip Box in the office.

• As it's a clear bag we will sort boy/girl or unisex for on the day.

• Examples of items include stationery, hair accessories, toys, pens etc.

Wristbands and TokensWristbands and tokens for the Halloween Carnival are now on sale via Flexischools. These will be distributed to students the week of the carnival.

• Early bird wristband (on or before Monday 30 September 2019) $27

• Wristband (after Monday 30 September 2019) $30

• Family pack of 3 wristbands $85

• Token at $5 each

• 6 x $5 tokens for $28

More rides and attractions for all. The younger ones will also benefit with a wristband as not only does the wristband include all the rides but it also includes the inflatable rides, petting zoo, 9D cinema and ride on animals. Tokens can also be used for the rides and stalls. All tickets are non-refundable. Sale of wristbands and tokens will be closed on Tuesday 29 October at 5pm.

Second Hand Teddies & Stuffed ToysPlease only donate them if you think they are in good condition for a little boy or girl to buy & love.

Please leave them in the teddies & stuffed toy box in the school office.

CLASS 4S - Week 10

Canteen NewsThis week, we have 4R volunteering, followed by 4S. Thank you to those who have volunteered so far - you have all been amazing! Any gaps in the roster you can help us fill would be greatly appreciated. Please use the SignUpGenius link https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0d4bafa82ca5f58-term15, email us at [email protected], or phone/text Kath on 0419 303 332. Your assistance is always appreciated.

CLASS 4R - Week 9

Can we please ask all parents to only send coins (or nothing greater than a $5 note) to school for your child to spend at the canteen. We are getting an increased amount of students coming in with large notes which we are often unable to change. Small change helps us to ensure all children are served in a fast and efficient manner, and also decreases the chance of change being lost at school.

May we also remind all parents and students that the cut off time for lunch orders is 8.30am. We are getting an increased amount of phone orders after this time, along with walk ins requesting manual orders. With three lunchtimes and up to 400 orders in a day, we run a very tight schedule, and it can often impact our day if we need to attend to requests outside of our usual schedule. Please remember you can place orders via flexischools/sckoolbag app the night before, or even weeks or months before. Please be reassured that if your child forgets their lunch or a lunch order isn't confirmed, it is policy for the teacher to send them to the canteen where they will be offered a Cheese or Vegemite sandwich, so they will never go hungry. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Also, if your child has an upcoming carnival, excursion, musical/sports event or any other activity where they won't be present at school over their lunchtime period, please refrain from ordering lunch on this day, as we are unable to prepare lunches outside of their normal lunchtimes.

The Canteen Team

May we remind you to have your hair tied back, and closed toe shoes (no thongs or open toe sandals). Also, please remember to sign in at the office and receive your visitors lanyard before arriving at the canteen.

Please be aware the canteen is CLOSED on Friday 27th of September (last day of term 3). Please ensure your child brings lunch from home on this day as canteen orders are unable to be fulfilled on this day.
