This course is designed for Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists and other Allied Health clinicians who are currently working with paediatric patients. The morning sessions will cover emerging Neurological medical management at RCH and the afternoon sessions will focus on more Physiotherapy specific assessment and treatment. All Allied Health clinicians are welcome to attend half or full days.

This course is targeted at Paediatric Physiotherapists working in the aquatic environment with patients who have a range of complex neurological and neuromuscular conditions. The focus is on practical clinical application of using the properties of water to facilitate clinical changes in the acute patient through the recovery phase, including troubleshooting the more challenging patient. Places in this course are limited. It will include theoretical and practical components and some pre-reading will be provided.

• The evidence for aquatic intervention and an update on current precautions and contraindications• Strengthening in Neurology for physical function, including the very weak client• Core stability… in children? – The treatment of Postural Control• Managing issues in the pool – Tone, post-operative complications, ventilators and other challenging patients• Use of Equipment for positions, progression, and variety

Presenters:

Julie Harrison BPhty (Hons) Cert Hydro (Latrobe), and Judy Larsen BPhty. Judy and Julie have worked together in aquatic clinical practice for over 25 years, running inpatient hydrotherapy services, hospital hydrotherapy departments/pools, community hydrotherapy services and hydrotherapy programs for special school and disability services. They are currently the directors of Hydrotherapy Brisbane, Australia’s largest Aquatic Private Practice and Hydrotherapy Centre.
