NEURODIVERGENT, or ND (and NEURODIVERGENCE)

Neurodivergent, sometimes abbreviated as ND, means having a brain that functions in ways that diverge significantly from the dominant societal standards of “normal.”

The terms neurodivergent and neurodivergence were coined by Kassiane Sibley, a multiply neurodivergent neurodiversity activist.

A form of autism, which is a lifelong disability that affects how a person makes sense of the world, processes information and relates to other people. Asperger syndrome is mostly a “hidden disability”. This means that you can’t tell that someone has the condition from their outward appearance. People with the condition have difficulties in three main areas: social communication, social interaction and social imagination.

DYSLEXIA

Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty and most commonly characterized by difficulties with the acquisition of reading, spelling and writing skills. Dyslexic people often have auditory processing difficulties, poor organizational skills, poor physical co-ordination and directional confusion. The majority of dyslexic people have poor short-term memory that causes an inability to retain sequences of numbers and words, and instructions to carry out simple tasks.

• Dyslexia – between 2 and 15%• Dyspraxia – between 4 and 6%• Dyscalculia – between 1 and 7%• ADD/ADHD 0.3%• Asperger syndrome – 0.7%
