Neue Haas Unica is the revival of a typefacethat has attained almost mythical status inthe type community.

Released by the Haas Type Foundry in 1980,Unica was developed by Team 77 (AndrGrtler, Christian Mengelt and ErichGschwind) as a hybrid of two existing fonts:Univers and Helvetica.

By the late 190s, designers had beenworking with these two hugely influentialfonts for more than two decades. They knewthe strengths, weaknesses and best usesof each.

Haas identified a space between them fora font based on Helvetica but drawingon other sans-serif typefaces, most notablyUnivers one more suited to the newly-

established technology of phototypesetting.

Unica hit the sweet spot. Understated,clean and elegant, it was warmer, less rigidand less mannered than Helvetica.

But it found only limited success. Desktoppublishing rendered phototypesettingobsolete and both Helvetica and Universwere updated for digital use. Unica wassidelined. The typographic love-childbecame the lost child.

A graduate of Musashino Art Universityin Tokyo, type designer Toshi Omagarijoined Monotype shortly after receivinghis masters degree from the Universityof Reading in England. Proficient indrawing letters for the Latin alphabet,Omagari is also skilled at designingseveral other alphabets including Greek,Cyrillic and Mongolian. Designing type
