RNC
• The Radio Network Controller (or RNC) is a governing element in the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System UMTS radio access network (UTRAN)
• It is responsible for control the Node Bs that are connected to it.

RNC INTERFACE
Critical functions of RNC
• Mobility management• Power control• Soft and softer handovers• Link maintenance• Traffic concentration• Support of mobile services
Mobility management
• Physical location of users• Subscriber location• Call processing• SMS• Basic mobile services
Power control
• Controls over transmitted power of the terminal and Base Stations
• Less interference• Allows more no of users on same carrier Hence more capacity• Frequency reuse
Soft and Softer handovers
It allows two or more users to communicate simultaneously with two or more cells in two or more base stations
Advantages
• Fewer lost calls• Power controls• Increase quality of services
Disadvantages• Needs additional hardware resources
Link maintenance
• Fault localization • Reconfiguration of RNC and reconfiguration
support for Node B • Software updates in RNC and Node B
CONCLUSION
• RNC is a important network element in 3G wireless network.• It controls over BTS(base transceiver stations).• Backbone of wireless network.
