Nestl meets Greenpeace demandsIan Duff, forest campaignNestl clearly didnt like being branded a killer for its use of palm oil from rainforest

destruction. It has now agreed to a zero deforestation policy for sourcing both palm

oil and paper products in record time. The company announced a process to identify

and remove any companies from its supply chain that has links to deforestation this

includes companies in the Sinar Mas Group, the notorious Indonesian palm oil and

paper producer, as well as Sinar Mas palm oil from supply company Cargill.

Since active supporters rebranded the Nestl headquarters in London at the start of

the international campaign in March, Greenpeace forest campaigners met with Nestl

executives several times. Our spoof KitKat advert, released online, received over

1.5 million views, while activists sent over 200,000 emails to Nestl, made hundreds

of phonecalls to the company and comments on its facebook page. Across the UK,

active supporters were out on the streets engaging people in the campaign. All this

work was supported by Greenpeace activists around the world, exposing Nestls link

to forest destruction at the companys headquarters in Frankfurt, Beijing and Jakarta

and at its AGM in Switzerland.

And this delivered exactly what we set out to achieve; a complete turnaround from

Nestl. The company has met all our demands. Independent organisation, The Forest

Trust, worked with Nestl to develop its policy and together we will be closely

monitoring the companys progress. Thank you so much for all your hard work so far;weve achieved an incredible amount in just two months of focussed work.

Of course, Nestl was not the only company sourcing palm oil and paper products

from the destruction of Indonesias rainforests. Now its time to focus on banking

giant HSBC. The bank claims to have a long standing commitment to protecting the

environment and has numerous green policies, but it continues to invest in Sinar

Mas. However, HSBC bosses will soon face the consequences of their investments,

and see they can't bank on deforestation or driving orangutans to extinction. You

made Nestl take action, let's do the same with HSBC.

Looking forwardsJohn Sauven, Executive DirectorThis is the last issue of Network from now on, the

best way to keep actively involved in Greenpeaces

work will be the new monthly e-bulletin for active

supporters, GetActive. The very first issue of

Network went to print in February 1999 and eleven

years on, the world is a different place. True, we still

work to realise our vision of a green and peaceful

world, promoting solutions and confronting the

governments and corporations that still stand in

the way. But we have also seen real change inpeople's understanding of, and engagement with,

environmental issues. Climate change is no longer

a problem that can be brushed under the carpet

and the internet and social networking sites have

    revolutionalised our ways of working.

This last issue celebrates our two most recent

victories. Both have been big news in the last few

weeks stopping the third runway at Heathrow

and getting Nestl to protect Indonesia's rainforests.

But its not just the successes that we want to

acknowledge here, there is still a lot to do.

These two latest victories, along with all our

others, show that change can and does happen

    when we work together.

Last month, activists scaled BP's headquarters in

London to rebrand the company British Polluters

(see front cover). This marks the beginning of a

new strand of work to stop BP from investing the

most environmentally destructive ways to extract

oil, such as deepwater drilling and tar sands. On this

and other campaigns, we're grateful to be able to

count on the incredible support of the thousands of

    active supporters around the country.

Active supporters exposed Nestls links to rainforest destruction, at its London headquarters, March 2010.

We stop the third runwayAnna Jones, climate campaignerAs we took the deeds containing the names of 91,317 owners of Airplot the plot of

and in the middle of Heathrows proposed third runway at 10 Downing Street, it

finally sank in... we won! There will be no third runway at Heathrow airport, thanks to

opposition from Airplotters and a huge coalition including residents' groups Hacan and

NoTRAG, local councils, Climate Camp, WWF and RSPB. As the very first formal

petition to the new government, the Airplot deeds showed David Cameron and Nick

Clegg the strength of opposition to the runway and affirmed their commitment to

dropping plans for runways at Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick airports.

Celebrating our victory with us that day were Linda and Terry representing the

residents of Sipson, the village that would have been destroyed by the third runway.

They have campaigned tirelessly to save their village for more than eight years,

making it an emotional day for all. As the door to Number 10 closed, Linda grabbed

my hand and we actually skipped down Downing Street past a crowd of journalists

and photographers. Getting a government and a corporation like BAA to admit defeat

    s worth skipping about!

Of course we still need to make sure the new government rejects not just runways,

but also the wider airport expansion policy set out by the previous government.

Airport expansion at a time when the government needs to take strong leadership

n reducing our carbon emissions makes no more sense in Bristol, Birmingham oranywhere else in the UK than it did in London. Airplot shows what can be done,

ets build on that fantastic start!

    The Heathrow Contest winners announced

Although the new governments commitment means we now shouldnt have to occupy

the Airplot land to prevent construction, architects from around the world had already

come up with fantastic ideas and designs to fortify the land and protect the climate.

Our competition challenge to architects was to create 'a piece of sustainable design: a

practical solution with cultural and aesthetic power to match the depth and importance

of what's at stake'... we weren't disappointed. You can view some of the entries atwww.flickr/photos/greenpeaceuk and clicking on The Airplot Contest.

The involvement of architects was the latest demonstration of the breadth of

resistance to Heathrows third runaway. Alongside successful entries from the public

competition, the best architectural designs were on display at the cutting-edge

Bargehouse Gallery on London's Southbank at the beginning of June.

Climate campaigner Anna and head of press Ben, together with Sipson resident Linda, take the Airplot deeds to the

new government at Downing Street, 13 May 2010.
