NETFLIX CREATES PRO-SOPA SUPER-PAC?

As US lawmakers consider anti-piracylegislation, they may have found an ally inNetflix. The streaming content giant hascreated its own super PAC, raising claimsthat it will support anti-piracy measures inWashington to promote SOPA-like laws.

Hollywood and record industry supportdidn’t help Congress get SOPA and PIPAto pass the House and Senate, but now theymay have a new accomplice in theircontinuing fight to try and push for anti-piracy legislation.

The filing with the Federal ElectionsCommission (FEC) made by Netflix wasreported by Politico on April 5. Thenumber one name in (legal) streamingvideo services in the US filed for theformation of its own political actioncommittee, appropriately titled FLIXPAC.

The newly established agency may be ableto endorse politicians by way of stuffingtheir pockets, which could influence evenmore congressmen to condone increasinglycontroversial bills considered in the Houseand Senate. Congressional records wouldseem to support this possibility, as theyshow that the lobbying expenses of Netflixrose from $20,000 in 2009 to $500,000 in2011.

The most notorious of those bills – the StopOnline Piracy Act (SOPA) – is thought tohave found initial support with NetflixCEO Reed Hastings, who reportedlyexpressed solidarity with SOPA's ultimategoals in a letter to the Chamber ofCommerce. However, once internetresistance to SOPA grew, Netflix hastilybacktracked, insisting that the company hasbeen "neutral" on the issue right from the

start.

Following the defeat of the Stop OnlinePiracy Act and the PROTECT IP Act (orSOPA and PIPA, respectively), Congresshas been drafting an array of options that,if passed, are being touted as the long-awaited solution to what lawmakersconsider a dire problem in the States:online piracy. While the newest SOPA-substituting legislation have been authoredalready and ushered through Congress, thebacking of streaming behemoth Netflixcould ensure that the next attempt atcensoring the Web sees US PresidentBarack Obama signing it in no time.

Among the newest bills authored out ofWashington is the Cyber IntelligenceSharing and Protection Act, or CISPA.While proposed under the guise oflegislation necessary to implement federalprotection from foreign and domesticcyberattacks, if passed CISPA would alsoput in the hands of the government thepower to monitor and interfere withpractically any online interactions. Onlylast week, George W. Bush’s formerspecial adviser on cybersecurity, RichardA. Clarke, also addressed the necessity forsuch laws and proposed that theDepartment of Homeland Security startmoderating what goes in and out of theUnited States’ Internet “borders.”

The last time anti-piracy legislation cameclose to approval, massive Internetcampaigns stopped SOPA and PIPA deadin their tracks, but only after opponentspractically waged a war against theentertainment industry and supporters ofthe bills. Netflix, a long-time opponent ofonline piracy, if the rumors are indeed the

case, will be able to endorse electedofficials by way of big-time contributions,with the PAC now approved to hand out upto $5,000 per election.

At the dawn of the SOPA scandal, Netflixwas among the entertainment industrytitans to support the proposed bill, only toalter their stance as “neutral” amid massivepublic backlash. With other Internetservices and service providers stillthrowing their weight behind the newestanti-piracy bills, however, Netflix isexpected to follow suit, and maybe usemore than just urging to influencelawmakers. As they become one of thebiggest names in Hollywood, the pullNetflix has over politicians could be majorin terms of seeing CISPA or other similaracts are signed.

While SOPA and PIPA saw support fromboth the Recording Industry Association ofAmerica and the Motion PictureAssociation of America, the stance takenby Netflix – in terms of what Washingtonhas to offer – is bound to be viewed asincreasingly important as time goes by.Trade publication HIS Screen Digestreleased a study last week estimating thatthe 3.4 billion online viewings expected tooccur by the end of 2012. They willoutweigh 2.4 billion DVD and Blu-Raydisc views estimated for the sametimeframe. Additionally, online streams anddownloads in 2011 were clocked at only1.4, which showcases the seriousness ofhow Netflix might be respected in bothWashington and Hollywood in the comingmonths.

One and the Same: Arizona’s Anti-immigrant Godfather RussellPearce says Romney’s Immigration Policy Is ‘Identical to Mine’

On the heels of Mitt Romney’s attempt to Etch A Sketch away his extremismon immigration this week, Arizona’s anti-immigrant Godfather, former statesenator Russell Pearce, set the record straight once and for all on Romney’sposition on immigration, saying Romney’s immigration policy is ‘identical’to Pearce’s. In response, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released thefollowing statement:

1. “Arizona’s Russell Pearce confirmed what we already knew: Onimmigration, Mitt Romney would be the most extreme presidential nomineeof our time.

“This week, Romney tried to change the tune of his immigration extremism,not by proposing sensible solutions to our broken immigration system, butby misrepresenting President Obama’s record of leadership on immigration– even when the President has taken bold action on areas where Americansknow we can’t wait.

“Unfortunately for Mitt Romney, facts are stubborn things. Romney’s plansare extreme, and the far-right anti-immigrant wing sees a friend in MittRomney for a reason: they are one and the same. Mitt Romney has insultedpatriotic DREAM Act students, implying they are asking for a ‘handout,’ andhas said that all undocumented families should self-deport – far short of apractical immigration platform.

“Perhaps the saddest point is that Mitt Romney’s extreme policies are not amatter of conviction, but a matter of politics – he once described TedKennedy and John McCain’s comprehensive immigration reform bill as‘reasonable.’ But in his bid to court the far-right wing of the Tea Party, MittRomney made their policies his own.

“Russell Pearce’s comments make official what we already knew. Despitehis best attempts to shake his record clean, Romney’s say-anything candidacyhas made him one and the same with the most dangerously anti-immigrantvoices in the land, and he is too extreme for America.”
