RulesThere are many different rules in netball. Some of these include: Obstruction: where you fall on/push

someone. Stepping: where you step both feet

forward while holding the ball. Drag: where you drag you foot,

while holding the ball. Held ball: where you hold the ball

for more than three seconds.

Page 3: Netball

More rulesSome rules don’t have names, but you still can get a penalty for doing them. For example:If a ball is thrown in the air by you, you can’t catch it unless it has hit the ground, the ring or another player. Some rules are just common sense, like passing to people in your team, not the opposing team, trying to get the ball into your ring, not the opposing’s teams ring, and trying not to hit anyone, being if they are playing, umpiring or watching.

Positions

There are seven main positions in one team. All together there are fourteen players on

the court at one time. C (centre) start in the middle and serve the

ball to the other players in their team. They can go everywhere in the field, except the goal circle.

There are eight people (out of fourteen) that are aloud in the goal circle. GS (goal shooter) and GK (goal keeper) can only stay in the end third of the court.

Page 5: Netball

More positions

GA (goal attack) and GD (goal defense) can go in the GA’s goal third and the center third. They can also go into the goal circle. GA and GS can shoot, and GD and GK defend.

WD (wing defense) and WA ( wing attack) can go into the center third and the WA’s goal third, but may not entre the goal circle. The teams pass the ball up and down the field, attempting to shoot a goal.

Scoring

Scoring in netball is very simple. One goal equals one point. There are different strategies in shooting. Some players may rather short distances, or some may rather longer distances. Shots may not be counted if there was a call back earlier on or if the shooter is out of the circle.

Page 7: Netball

The red center has the ball so the blue centre stands back so it can help defend so the ball doesn’t get passed to the red wing attack and goal attack. If the ball gets passed the blue centre, it could get to the goal shooter or goal attack when they get to the goal circle. The goal keeper and the goal defense have to defend the goal.

Training

Netball training is important because it gives the players time to practice and speak about their strategies. Different areas such as shooting, running, team work and defending are all discussed and practiced. Players usually have specific roles to play, so they will train on these parts more than others, such as GA & GS, GK & GD, C,WA & WD.

Umpiring

There are usually two umpires on one court at a time. One will be in the 1st third, and one will be in the 3rd. They will umpire in these thirds, and they each umpire half of the center third . Umpires have whistles that they blow when someone has stepped, held the ball, obstructed or shot a goal.

One umpire will work in the red side

And the other in the blue side

Mascots

One mascot that is very well known is ‘Diamond Girl’. Diamond Girl dances her way around the country attending test matches and big games. She has a long blonde ponytail and is dress in green and gold. At the first she went to she was teaching everyone part of her ‘diamond dance’.

HistoryIn 1891, James Naismith went to Springfield U.S.A. He had created men’s basketball and he wanted to make a woman’s version. He removed the backboard to make it easier for the woman to shoot goals though the hoop with a soccer ball sized ball. In the 1970’s they decided to change the name from woman’s basketball to ‘netball’.

Sponsors

Different netball teams or groups can have different sponsors. These sponsors help the netball teams by donating money, prizes or clothes. Getting a sponsor is very simple. The teams will simply ask someone to be their sponsor. They are most likely to say yes. If the teams win tournaments they will advertise their sponsor or sponsors.

Is it true?

The theory of ‘boys can’t play netball, It’s a girl game’, is false. As girls can play basketball, boys can play netball and a fair few do. There are mostly all girl teams, but there are some mixed boy/girl teams and there are also some all boy teams.

Fun facts

1) Netballs are usually the size of soccer balls, but they can be bigger or smaller. A soccer ball sized netball is a size five.2) If someone has ear rings in or nails longer than their fingers, they cannot play. They must take them out/cut them. Otherwise, they could scratch someone, lose their ear rings or cut their ears with the ear rings, if they are sleepers.

Page 17: Netball

More fun facts

3) The netball court is just like a basketball court without some of the lines. All the lines on the netball court are one colour. Usually white or blue.4) Though the game is called netball, there is actually no net. There is just a ring, unless the players are on a basketball court.

Why is netball fun for me?I like netball because it is a competitive game. Yet it is still friendly. Some people are more rough than others, being that they may obstruct more or less. I myself can be rough if I need to, but I rarely need to be, as most people I face are friendly. Most of my time playing netball has been in the goal third, being a GS or GK. I have also spent some time being a GA, GD or WD.

Funny memoriesWhen I was in kindergarten I played ‘fun net’. It was the game little kids played. One of the games was when one of the ladies threw a ball at you and you had to catch it. She threw the ball at my face. Hard. So hard that it knocked out my tooth. I didn’t play in year one because of that. I played in year two along with years three, four, five & six because we played real netball and not fun net.

Page 20: Netball

More funny memories

Another funny memory was on my first gala day in year two. Our team had years two, three & four. One of the teams we faced was a full year six team. My best friend was so short that she was running through the girls’ legs. It was very funny to watch her.

My awards and trophies

At home I have four medals and five trophies for netball. I have only ever played netball for St. Josephs before and there was only ever one team in my age group, so coming to McCarthy and playing here will be a very new experience, and I can’t wait for the season to start!

Netball in Tamworth

We used to play netball at the fields in West Tamworth. Now we play at the sports dome. When you get older, (About year four and up) you can play on the concrete. When you are just starting netball, you play on grass incase you fall over.

Netball uniforms

Most primary school netball teams just wear the school sport uniform. McCarthy has a specific netball uniform. Famous teams have their own netball uniform. These usually with a short skirt and a singlet top or a short dress. They have special team colours on these uniforms.

Netball competitions

There are lots of different types of netball competitions. There are test matches, gala days and round robins. There are also just friendly matches. When playing for a school you feel like it’s a friendly match when it’s actually not. School matches are usually round robin matches.

Page 25: Netball

The draw

Your team, along with everyone else's, will be put in a draw. You will be assigned a team each week along with a court number. You can face teams more than once within the season. Games usually go for one hour, but on gala days they can be from fifteen to thirty minutes.
