“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

From Sunday’s Gospel John 14:1-12

As I type this Pastor’s Message, I just finished presiding at a funeral Mass for one of our parishion-ers. The Gospel chosen at that ceremony is the same one for this 5th Sunday of Easter, listed above. It’s one of the most commonly chosen gospels for funeral liturgies, and there is a reason why: who does not love the image of a dwelling place set aside for us in the great mansion we call heaven? In this section of John’s Gospel, Jesus is preparing his disciples for his upcoming departure from this world. He comforts them by telling them not to let their hearts be troubled but to instead have faith in God and in himself as we hear further verses from this Sunday’s Gospel: “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you . . . Where I am going you know the way.” Thank God for Thomas’ frank-ness in telling Jesus he didn’t know what he was talking about. From it, Jesus gives us in one sentence a summary of his mission. He is the way or road in the original Greek. Every road leads somewhere. Walking in the mas-ter’s footsteps leads to the Father. How do we walk with Jesus? We walk with him when our small-er journeys in life help build up of God’s kingdom. When we visit others, are we going there in

order to uplift them, share fellowship with them and build up their spirits? Or do some of our visits found in the holy scriptures and the Church’s magisterium, or teaching body; following the Good Shepherd leads us experiencing the peace of knowing we do not walk alone in this world as we experience a fullness of life in this world. Following Jesus means we can hope to experience the gift of eternal life in a dwelling place set aside especially for us. Let us not let our hearts be troubled but instead walk by faith and not by sight, following Christ our way, our truth and our life. Fr. Dennis

CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE RECEIVING EASTER SACRAMENTS We congratulate the following members of our R.C.I.A. who last week received Easter Sacra-ments. Last Wednesday, Tess Osborn and Devin Schryver were received into the Church and received the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist. On Sunday, Denise Valenzuela received her First Eucharist. Please continue to pray for those who have and who will be receiving sacraments in the coming weeks as we welcome them into our community of faith.

UPDATES ADORATION WILL RESUME! I know many are anxious to return to Adoration. Until May 18th, we must still abide by the rule of having 10 or fewer persons in the Church. Following that guideline, our Church will reopen for Ad-oration with limited hours beginning Monday, May 11th. The hours will be: M-F 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. We will be monitoring to make sure there are no more than 10 persons but ask each attendee to self-monitor as well. Contact Michael Robles at 210-870-7612 if you are under the age of 65 and can commit to being present at a specific for the coming weeks. Those who come should wash their hands before entering the church and wear a mask. There will be no prayer books available so please bring your own materials to pray with. SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION We will resume with our regular schedule of offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Wednes-days from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20th. We are still working on the location since we have been advised not to use the confessionals since there is limited air flow. Details will follow in next week’s bulletin. We will ask that those coming to the sac-rament wear facial coverings. PUBLIC MASSES By the time you receive this bulletin our Archbishop would most probably have announced the time in which public Masses will resume. It could be May 18th, May 25th or even later, but it is not likely to be before May 18th. When that date is given, we will most probably only allow a 25% capacity in our church and also require that other than those who live in the same household and are part of

BAPTISMAL INFORMATION At this time all baptismal classes and group baptisms are suspended until further notice. Please contact Deacon Oscar Vela at [email protected] (the Stmatt.org does not need to be capitalized) for all inquires.

the same family must keep a six-foot distance from each other. We will only have one entrance to the Church and either one or only a few designated exits. Parishioners are asked not to shake hands or have any physical contact with one another. You will be required to wear a mask during the Mass, which can be lowered or removed while receiving communion in the hand. Exchanging the sign of peace with one another will continue to be omitted. During the Saturday Vigil and Sun-day Masses, everyone will be required to leave the Church immediately after the Mass has ended by following the instructions of the ushers, probably leaving from those seated in the back of the church to the front of the church, maintaining a six-foot radial distance from one another. Please cooperate and follow the instructions of the ushers! We will sanitize the church after each Mass; this will necessitate fully locking down the church. On the weekends, we will only open the church about 20 minutes before the service begins. Do not crowd the church entrances before the doors are open! Once we reach the limited capacity of the church, an usher will instruct parishioners if we have an overflow area, such as the McDonald Cen-ter, where parishioners can participate in the live streamed Mass and receive communion when Eucharistic Ministers from the main church go distribute it in the overflow area. Once the overflow area is full, at this time we would ask you to come to the next scheduled Mass. Please be patient and understand these limits are placed for our safety. The Archbishop will most likely extend the decree in which persons are exempt from physically coming to Mass but encouraged to participate in taped or live streamed Masses. Those who are 65 or older, and especially those suffering from preexisting medical conditions that have been widely discussed in the media, such as diabetes, asthma, etc. are encouraged not to come. Those who are significantly older than 65, such as those in their 80’s or older, must realize that the death rates for those who are infected are dramatically higher for that age group and are also encouraged not to come at this time. Of course those who have COVID-19 in its active stage, those who have been recently exposed to someone who has COVID-19, those who are sick, those who are coughing, should also not come. Please follow the recommendations of local, state and national leaders. OTHER LITURGICAL SERVICES Once the date for public Masses is given, we can have other liturgies and sacraments, such as fu-nerals, baptisms, weddings, Group First Communions and Quinceaneras abiding by the same prin-ciples of 25% occupancy and six-foot radial distancing. We don’t have the specific number for our church, but I am estimating it would allow for at least 200 persons.

VOCATION Roman Catholics in the United States spend a good deal of time speaking of “vocation” and the manner in which each of us discerns our vocation for life. In today’s apostolic letter, however, Peter gives us the “cornerstone” of our vocation, the description of what each of us is called to first and foremost by our baptism. He describes our vocation as “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of [God’s] own, so that you may announce the praises” of Christ, who called us out of darkness into light (1 Peter 2:9). All of us, no matter what path our life’s vocation may take us down, have been chosen by God, made holy, and anointed as priests in the high priesthood of Christ through baptism. All of this, so that we may announce the praises of Christ. Vocation is given for proclamation at home, in the workplace—wherever life takes us—in service, in word, and in sacrament. Copyright © J. “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” — John 14:6

Dear Lord, I approach you to give thanks to all mothers who so generously and freely give love, comfort, and guidance to their children every day. I ask you, Lord, to give them strength to carry on doing their work. Give them patience and let them see that they are loved, ap-preciated and respected. I thank you for the sacrifice each mother makes every day. And I pray you bless them and touch them with your Grace. I pray this in your mighty name. Amen.
