How many times d e say these rds ith-ut really thinking abut the cnsequences f
hat is arund the crner? It might be great nes– a ne baby r even a in n the lttery.
But sometimes, without warning, lie throws theunthinkable at us. Many o us will know people whohave died young or suered a lie changing illness and we all hope it will never happen to us. A long-termillness or injury can be lie changing and the nancialconsequences can be devastating or our amilies andus.
Survival rates or some serious cancers have im-proved dramatically over the last 10 years with over
80% emale breast cancer suerers and around 70%o prostate cancer suerers still alive ater 5 years –source: National Statistics Online April 2009 period2001-2007. However, many o these suerers wouldnot able to return to work ull time.
I this were to happen to you, ask yoursel the ollow-ing questions.- How long would my nances last?- What will I get rom the state?- How long will I get paid at work?
Details o sta sickness terms can usually be oundin a sta handbook or contract and you can nd outabout sick pay entitlement at www.entitledto.co.uk,
www.direct.gov.co.uk will also explain about the statebenet availability and how long it is paid or. Tesebenets will only provide minimal income sufcientto maintain a basic standard o living, but are unlikely to replace lost salary.
Income Protection Insurance (IRP) can provide atop up to state benets by providing a regular incomeon diagnosis o an illness or injury that keeps you o work or a signicant period. Tese plans provide atax-ree income o between 50% and 60% o yourincome, paid monthly, either until you return to work or retire. Usually plans have a deerred period beorethe benet starts to be paid out, which matches the
length o time you continue to be paid. For example,i you are entitled to six months’ pay then an IRPpolicy would start paying out ater the six monthsperiod is up.
It’s important that the right plan is taken out to suityour circumstances, as there are dierent optionsavailable in the market. A ull review o your needs inthis area with a qualied Financial Adviser would beessential to ensure you end up with the correct cover.

I like to reminisce with people I don’t know.
TribUTES hve een pd t lng-
standing Neston councillor and former
Mayor of Ellesmere Port and Neston,
Norman Angel, who died on 1st June.
Born in Liverpool on October 12,
1923, Norman graduated from Durham
Universit with a Bachelor of Science
degree. Following ve ears with the RAF,
two of these based in India, he forged a
career with Shell, based at the Thornton
Research Centre as a research scientist.
Norman joined Ellesmere Port and
Neston Borough Council, representing
the Neston ward, in 1974 following Local
Government Reorganisation. He was
Chairman of the Housing Committee for
11 ears and took on the role of Maor
of Ellesmere Port and Neston between
1983 and 1984. Prior to 1974 he served
as a Councillor on Neston Urban District
Council, where he was twice Chair of the
Council.
High school campaign
He served as a councillor for over 45
ears. Following his decision not to
stand for re-election, he was made anHonorar Alderman of the Council in 2003
for his outstanding contributions to local
Government.
One of his proudest achievements
was his successful campaign for a
comprehensive school in Neston. In
the earl 1950s Neston did not have
a secondar school but b 1958
a secondar modern school was
established, which, thanks to the efforts
of Norman and others, became a
comprehensive school in 1974.
Cheshire West and Chester Councillor
Derek Bateman, who worked with
Norman at the former Ellesmere Port and
Neston Borough Council, said: “Norman
was an extremel sincere, hardworking
and smpathetic man, who above all, was
fair when it came to decision-making.
“He alwas put the needs of his
constituents rst and was tenacious in
his causes and achieving his aims, never
giving up on what he believed to be right
and true.
“He certainl left his mark on both
Ellesmere Port and Neston and will besorel missed.”
He had also been a Governor of Neston
High School and had served as Chair of
Governors of Neston Primar School.
Former Leader of Ellesmere Port and
Neston Borough Council Reg Chrimes
said: “I knew Norman both as a fellow
colleague and as a friend. He was a
dedicated socialist and a erce champion
of the people of his ward, whom herepresented for more than 40 ears.
“His master of nancial and statistical
detail won him the respect not onl
of fellow members but also of council
ofcers. Throughout his service he
worked in good fellowship with his
colleagues, winning their admiration and
affection.”
Norman is survived b his wife Efe,
son Peter, daughter-in-law Rachel and
grandchildren Daniel and Nathan.

CLAYHILL INDUSTRIAL ESTATE
IMPROVEMENTS SOUGHT
NESTON Town Council is calling for
improvements to the town’s industrial estate
off Liverpool Road.
Councillors have been told that business
owners feel isolated and neglected, and
are unhapp with what the see as lack of
support from the authorities.
At its June meeting the Town Council
agreed to a proposal from Cllr And
Williams (Neston Ward) for a wide-ranging
consultation with businesses on suggested improvements. These include improved signage
to the estate and on it, and efforts to “green” the area with tree and oral plantings.
The Council also considered whether a change in name to Neston Business Park would be
more appropriate and improve the image of the area.
NEW COUNCILLOR WELCOMED
KAy Loch has joined Neston Town Council as the new Town Councillor for Ness.
Mrs Loch, who is alread a Cheshire West & Cheshire councillor, was chosen b the Town
Council from three applicants for the vacanc, following the resignation of Mike Wellman.

NEW LINK IN THE CHAIN
CLLR Moira Andrews, rst Chairman of Neston Town Council, has presented a new Town
Council crest to be added to the Maor’s chain of ofce.
The sterling silver gilt blue enamelled crest will hang above the pendant. The chain was
originall that of the chairman of Neston Urban District Council which was abolished in 1974
when the borough of Ellesmere Port & Neston was created.

N gi f
wil lkA NEW edtn f the ppul ‘Wl Wls: 100
Miles of the Best Walks in the Area’ comes out on
16th July.
With 27 ideas for local walks, now there is no excuse
for having nothing to do over the summer and beond!
The walks range from 1½ miles long to a 10½ mile
‘shore to-shore’ route, right across our peninsula.
Most are around 3 to 4 miles – ideal for a stroll of one
and a half to two hours. The author is Anthon Annakin-Smith, well known on
the Wirral as a walk leader and as a popular speaker
on the local histor and landscape. Anthon said ‘We are reall fortunate to have such
wonderful scener on our doorsteps, and there is no better wa to see it than on foot.
Prett villages, beautiful beaches, glorious countrside and so man great views – what
more could ou want?’
As well as giving clear directions and eas-to-follow maps the book tells readers about
the natural and man-made points of interest the can see. As Mike McCartne, Cultural
Ambassador for Wirral, who wrote the Foreword to the book sas, ‘Not onl does the
book suggest some great walking routes but it also explains what we can see along thewa, bringing Wirral’s scenic and historic heritage to life.’
So, whether ou are interested in where dinosaur footprints have been found, signs of
our Viking ancestors from over a 1000 ears ago or want to know something about the
wind farms off the coast toda, the book will tell ou.
‘I am often asked which is m favourite walk’ said Anthon. ‘It’s alwas a trick
question but the peacefulness, historical interest and stunning views of the Burton
Point route take some beating. As a complete contrast I also love the buildings, street
art and sheer liveliness of New Brighton – this walk alwas throws up surprises.’
The book, priced at just £8.99, should be available from all good booksellers including
Linghams, Waterstones, W H Smith and Amazon.Anthon will be leading four free walks this summer: at Parkgate on 24 Jul, to Neston
Old Qua on 27 Jul, the Neston Collieries on 8 August and Burton Point on 9 August.
For more details contact Neston Librar on 337 4670.
For a chance to win a copy of ‘Wirral Walks’ just answer the following question:
Which people settled on the Wirral over 1000 years ago?
a) Vikings b) Victorians c) Visigoths?
Answers should be sent to: [email protected] Please include “Local
Competition” in the address line. Closing date is Monday 2nd August – thewinner will be picked at random from all ‘Local’ readers with the right answer.

JuLy – HIGH suMMerGardeNING By JaNeT HeaTH
IN July, ny f the weng shus
are over and colour comes from the
perennials in your garden.
Cool blues can be found in lavenders
which enjo hot dr situations and will seed
themselves into gravel if ou have a gravel
path or drive. Lavender Hidcote with dark blue
owers is a smaller shrub than the original
English Lavender which has longer stems of
pale blue owers. Both look good bordering
a path or near a seating area where ou can
brush against the foliage to release the scent.
The can die off in hard winters and tend to
become sparse with age so expect to replace
them after a few ears. Once owering is over,
clip the shrub back but do not cut back into
wood without green growth. Lavenders do not
sprout new shoots from leaess wood.
Tr planting lavender with deep purple sage
plants for contrast in foliage colour and texture.
There are some good robust perennials that
ower in Jul that will come up ear after ear
and require little attention. If ou want vibrantmagenta colour, tr the perennial geranium
Ann Folkard. The plant is not ver tall and
produces stems of owers with black and
magenta pink owers from summer to autumn.
Cut off the stems after owering and moreshould be produced in autumn.
Plant the geranium with a ellow Hemerocallis
or da lil for a bright and cheerful displa of
contrasting shapes and colours. Hemerocallis
come in a range of large and small varieties
with grass or strap like leaves and tall heads
of lil owers in Jul.
In the vegetable garden, plant out winter leeks
and brassicas such as broccoli and sprouts.
Sow lettuce when the weather is cooler, germination of lettuce seeds is poor in high
temperatures so wait for a cooler period before
sowing seed. Net fruit such as strawberries
and blueberries so the birds do not eat the fruit
rst. Raspberries seem to be largel immune
probabl as the fruit is not so eas for birds to
reach.

Paperback Fiction: The Lacuna - Barbara Kingsolver
Some of the national reviews have been rather lukewarm about this book, but I
reall loved it. The main character, Harrison Shepherd, is a novelist who writes
romantic adventures. Born in Washington, b the age of 13 he is living in Mexico
with his mother, and her right-wing businessman bofriend. Shepherd gets a job
as a cook with Diego Rivera and his artist wife, Frida Kahlo, (real life characters)
who take Trotsk into their household when he has to ee Russia and hide from
Stalin’s hit-men. The assassin eventuall arrives, Trotsk is murdered, and the
second half of the novel deals with the wa Shepherd’s private life is taken to
pieces b McCarthist ‘Red’ witch-hunters who suspect him of being a militantCommunist.
I know man of our customers are big fans of The Poisonwood Bible and I
would dare to suggest this is just as good. Kingsolver has a magic wa of looking
at histor from a new angle and this is a highl satisfing and man-laered
novel. Perfect holida reading and a great one for our Book Club- I hope to do
it in ours!
Biography: The Bridge: The Life and Rise of Barack Obama
- David Remnick
The rise of Barack Obama is one of the great stories of thiscentur: a dening moment in American histor, and one with trul
global resonance. Until now, no journalist or historian has written
a book that full investigates the circumstances and experiences
of Obama’s life or explores the ambition and conviction behind his
journe to election. The Bridge offers a portrait, at once masterl
and fresh, nuanced and unexpected, of the man who was
determined to become the rst African-American president. This
is a big book but an important one for students of American
politics and there are moments of small personal detail which
prevent it from becoming too dr.
Cooking: Cooking is Fun: Grace Aderonke Adegoke
(Local Author)
As well as running a successful Afro-Caribbean restaurant, local author
Grace has had time to put together this book of mouth-watering dishes using
nothing but fresh ingredients. I can vouch for the deliciousness of her recipes
as she recentl had a tasting session outside Linghams- the mixture of smells
drifting through the open door into the shop were utterl tantalizing! Her book
is beautifull produced with eas to follow instructions and lovel photograph.
Highl recommended.
