Complexity can lead to Packaging Issues
• Mineral oils in jute sacks (1991)
• BADGE from metal coating (1996)
• Mineral oils from printing paperboard (1997)
• SEM, ESBO from metal closures (2003)
• ITX from UV-printing (2005)
• BPA from PC and epoxy lacquers (2008-...)
• Benzophenone from printing inks (2009-...)
• Mineral oils from printed/recycled paper (2010…)

It takes years to build trust and fidelity in brands and products
It only takes seconds to destroy that trust
2. The Nestlé Initiative
p. 8
Define what were the root causes:
1 - Lack of knowledge
2 - Lack of monitoring
3 - Insufficient partnerships
Nestlé’s corrective actions:
Nestlé’s Response to Packaging issues
1 - Launched the Packaging Safety & Compliance Initiative
2 - Increased bilateral discussions with main suppliers
3 - Increased participation in industry group conferences
and conventions
What is the Goal of the Nestlé Packaging
Safety and Compliance Initiative?
To prevent packaging safety
and compliance incidents
(including recall of product)
due to safety and compliance failures.
A - Supplier Assessment
focusing on pack safety aspects

Functional Barrier
• Chemical compounds can migrate from the food
packaging into the food
• Except if you use a material which is a barrier to
chemical migration
– known as a Functional Barrier
• A Functional Barrier: reduces the migration of
chemical compounds below a specific migration
limit (SML)
• Absolute Functional Barriers:
• Glass,
• Aluminum foil 7µm
• Metal Cans
Functional Barrier
Nestlé uses a lot of Cans
The first product from Nestlé was
infant formula in a metal can.
Metal Packaging – Food Cans
• Metal packaging is a good way to preserve,
store and transport food
• The metal is a barrier to chemical migration.
• There can be a coating on the inside of the
metal to protect against corrosion
• This coating typically has Bisphenol-A (BPA)
based epoxy coatings - the standard coating
used in the food industry.
• Components from this coating
can migrate into the food -
including BPA.
4. BPA in Food Packaging
p. 17
Metal Packaging – Food Cans
• Consumers are concerned about BPA due to
negative media attention
• BPA has been banned in various countries in
various packaging formats – metal cans, metal
lids, polycarbonate bottles…
• Nestlé believes that BPA is safe to use in metal
can coatings, but our consumers do not want
BPA in their packaging.
Metal Packaging – Food Cans
• Nestlé started the phase-out of BPA several
years ago
– Already completed for infants’ and childrens’ food
and where regulations exist.
• The phase-out of BPA will take several years
more to complete
• The move out of BPA has included moving to
non-metal can packaging for some applications
Metal Packaging – Food Cans
Going Forward:
• Nestlé has been focused on Packaging Food
Safety for many years
• Packaging Food Safety is now on the radar
screen of the public
• non-BPA coatings for metal packaging is the
direction the food industry is moving.
– Because the food industry wants to continue to
pack food in metal cans.
