Where are we ?Where are we ?Half way between Scotland and Norway liesShetland a group of 100 islands. We are on the Mainland of Shetland.

Nesting is an area to the North East of themain town Lerwick. It is a rural area . The School has 22 pupils aged 5 – 11 years.

It started when we used a public holiday to open the schoolAnd visit the old folk in the sheltered housing.

After taking flowers to her dad thelocal shopkeeper invited us to sellour flowers in the shop.

Through a meeting of the IGW group in Lerwick we established a partnership with local care centre . They now refer their daycare patients to us for visits.

Then they started teaching us. They also sent their families to help.

Margaret one of our regular clients used to run her own knitwear firm. She went to Paris and Japan with her goods.

Dr Frances Wilkins and Debbie Scott workshop on Whaling & Shetland Tunes.

David Cooper came in and told us Trowie tales.

We learned the tunes and played them at the OAP’s Christmas Party.

They taught us how to set the tables.

A local joiner came and made our door. His family are involved in the visits.

The sides will be planted in Spring with wild flowers. This will soften the appearance and make it look more ancient.

Garden GeocachesGarden GeocachesTo attract people to our Schooland to Nesting we have also plantedGeocaches.

We have made a trail from the main road to the garden, and round all the other side roads in Nesting. It is very popular. It is called the TROWIE TRAIL.

We have had 322visits to our caches since June. Each cache tells the story of the location. People of all ages and nationalities visit.

What Next?

Some of the women are going to run traditional cooking classes funded by the school. These are for pupils & community. This builds on another Shetland Project. Produce from the class will be distributed to elderly.

Supper Dance

Sponsored Walk for benches around our community. Special guest Socks the dancing pony.We now have a very strong partnership with the local hall.

Learning to dance together. Profits to go to the hall.

All of our project can be done in any rural area of Scotland no matter how remote. All of the resources are in the communityand there is external funding available.
