Dear Parents,
Research shows that children lose 1-3 months of learning every sum-
mer. They lose literacy skills that they work so hard to acquire during
the school year and then play catch-up in the fall. You can help prevent
summer learning loss. Please support your child’s participation in this
summer learning endeavor.
In order to prevent summer learning loss, we are sending home “Be A
Super Hero, Read! Write!” Reading Log and Writing Journal. This
packet is to be completed by Friday, September 2. They will be
collected by your child’s teacher. Each child that completes the packet
will be invited to a celebration in September.
Each student will receive a literacy packet before the last day of school.
If you need another copy, you may obtain one in the Main Office during
the summer between 7:30 AM and 3:30 PM.
Each student completing their Reading Log and Writing Journal will
receive a prize for their hard work. A random drawing of one child per
grade level will receive a Barnes & Noble gift card.
We are hopeful you will encourage your child to complete the summer
reading and writing activities.
Have a safe, happy, and relaxing summer!

service to our school.
Be A Super Hero, Read! Write!
Children’s Book Week at Walter S. Miller was celebrated with a chock-full of literacy activities. Students were treated to
a Poem Break one day by two special visitors. On another day the children participated in “Read Me Day” wearing clothing with
words splattered about. While we couldn’t enjoy the great outdoors to have our “Book-nics”, students managed to find a cozy
place to curl up with a book and a blanket in their classrooms. Students delighted in teaching their classmates with challenging
vocabulary words. To end the week of fun-filled activities everyone took part in D.E.A.R. time---Drop Everything And Read!
In addition to these lively reading activities, students had to put on their investigative hats trying to solve the mystery
clues each morning. The queries ranged from mystery reader, mystery author to even mystery character. We were so proud of the
Walter Miller sleuths answering all the mystery clues that each class answering with 100% accuracy received a special prize.
Reading sure is fun!!!
Children’s Book Week
We love poetry
Yes, we do!
We love poetry
It is true!
This was the obvious sentiment after each grade level came together to share their poetry recitations.
Children chanted lines in unison, acted out lines, and even jumped rope to the rhymed verse. As a special
reward for a job well done, each student received a “Poem for their Pocket.”
June is a very exciting time in the elementary schools. With the school year coming to the end it is time for our students to cele-
brate their successes. It is a time for students to look back at the year and reflect on all they have learned and accomplished. Pride
in work and self is an integral part of the learning process. In addition, reflecting on the past school year helps students to set
goals for the next school year. Whether your child will be entering Kindergarten, Middle School or just another grade, preparing
him/her is very helpful and important. Some children will be affected more by grade/school transitions than others. As one school
year nears an end, think about these ideas to help transition your child through the summer to a new school year:
Talk about the positive side of entering a new grade (new teacher, new friends, new opportunities).
Address your child’s fears. Listen to and validate these fears, and talk about your own fears when you were that age.
Give lots of positive praise for trying new things.
If you feel that your child is experiencing high levels of anxiety about the upcoming transition, contact the guidance office
for additional support.
Relax! If you are relaxed about the changes ahead, your child will feel that and take your lead.
Thank you for a great year! I wish you all a wonderful summer and look forward to seeing you and
your children in September!
Mrs. Cynthia Connolly
“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a Summer’s day,
listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.”
Counselor’s Corner . . .
Our Miller students certainly DO have talent, as was
demonstrated on Thursday evening, May 19th at the
Walter Miller Elementary Spring Concert! Students
in grades 3, and 4 sang, performed on their instruments,
and entertained the crowd at the Sandburg auditorium.
Many thanks to our talented students, their music direc-
tors, Ms. Liz Folger, Ms. Joanna Hurd and Mr. Tim
Russell and our very supportive parents.
Spring Concert
With the new K-4 school configuration Walter Miller students were not able to participate in the Bucks County Reading Olym-
pics competition. That change did not stop the avid readers from our school to engage in their own contest. During the course of
several months, members of each team worked very hard reading a minimum of seven books, writing story maps and questions
for their books and participating in after-school meetings.
Two fourth grade teams vied against each other on a balmy May evening in the WM gymnasium. The competition was stiff. We
are proud to announce the D.E.A.R Team earned a blue ribbon while the Mastermind Readers received a red ribbon. Congratula-
tions to all!
