Title: The nervous system
What is this? How does it link to this man?
What are some ways this cell is specialised for its function?
LO: To describe the nervous system and how it worksLevel 6
Describe how a nerve impulse travels around the body and what body stimuli body receptors
respond toLevel 7
Explain how the nerve cell is adapted to its functionLevel 8
Explain how synapses work and how they allow impulses to travel and apply this information to
different diseases/drugs
The nervous system...
It has two main parts...
Central and Peripheral
It starts with a stimuli which is then recognised
by different receptors.
Explain to your partner what each of these things is!You must sum it up in NO more than 4 sentences!
This can be on a mini-whiteboard, in your book etc.
2 minutes!
Now you have 5 minutes to record what you’ve learnt!
Task 1.Make a table like this in your
book and fill it in Sense Organ Receptors
sensitive toEye
Ear
Skin
Tongue
Nose
Task 2. Write 2 sentences
explaining the difference between
the central and peripheral nervous
system!
Stretch: Where is this cell found and how is it
related to our topic?
A neurone is a nerve cell that carries an electrical impulse
There are lots of different types of neurone that take part in our response to a stimuli!
1. SENSORY NERVE
2. RELAY NERVE (central nervous
system – includes spine
and brain)
3. Motor Neurone SPINAL CORD
4. EFFECTOR
Stimulus Receptor Sensory Neurone Relay Neurone
Motor Neurone Effector Response
Effector:muscles of
the arm
Response:arm musclescontract and
hand withdrawsPain receptors
stimulated
Harmful stimulus from
a hot object
Rapid conduction of impulses through the reflex arc

1. Label your picture to show how an electrical impulse is carried
2. Label your picture of a synapse to show how electrical impulses are carried across gaps in between nerves
Stretch: Endorphins are a chemical that make you feel happy
and a lot are released when you take some drugs.
Can you explain how these might get to the brain/
might be increased using what you’ve learnt today!?
Stretch: Stephen Hawking has motor neurone
disease, this means his motor neurones are not working correctly.
Can you suggest some of the symptoms/ what happens to someone
if they have this disease?
Choose a stretch activity of your choice

PROGRESS CHECKBetween 4 people you have 7 blank pieces of
card! Can you write on them the 7 stages involved in
the response to a stimuli? You then must stand up, holding the cards in the
correct order!! Possible stimuli
choices:See child in roadTouch hot plate
Touch stinging nettlesTaste yummy food
For extra points include:1. The sensory organ you’d find the
receptor in2. The type of receptor
3. Your response e.g. Slam foot on brake!

There are 5 main topics covered today, these are on A4 sheets around
the room!1. The difference between central
and peripheral nervous system2. What nerve cells look like
3. How synapses work4. What stimuli, receptors and
sense organs are and the part they play in the nerve response
5. The seven stages of response to a stimuli
