Here comes the patient…You are working in the routine

newborn nursery as the admission nurse for the day. Labor and delivery has called and said they will be bringing you Baby Boy Jones, who was born 35 minutes ago via cesarean section due to the baby having decelerations in his heart rate during labor.  

The Baby Arrives:Baby Boy Jones:• Born at 11:01 am

• (It’s now 11:45am)

• Weight – 9# 10 oz

• Large for gestational age

• Length – 21”

• Vital Signs - Normal

• Temp 97.9 ax

• Heart Rate 142

• Respiratory Rate 34

• Blood Glucose 48 mg/dl– by heelstick

Mom’s History

The Labor and delivery

nurse, reports that mom

had very limited prenatal

care. She reports that mom

stated she had 3 clinic

visits during her pregnancy.

Mom speaks very little

English and is hard to

communicate with.

At 3 hours of age you recheck the blood sugar (per policy) and it is now 26 mg/dl. What do you do now?

Mom insists on only breastfeeding, but is not feeling up to it. What should you consider?
