Many Nelson ratepayers got a nice surprise when they opened their rates bill last week, unfortunately the quoted “$0.00” was a misprint.Nelson City Council issued a statement last week saying a printing error was the reason behind the mistake and that new bills would be issued this week.

“Unfortunately, due to a printing error by our mailhouse provider, ratepayers who received their rates assessments by mail will have received the incorrect assessment. These ratepayers are requested to disregard this assessment,” said a council spokesperson.Direct debit payments have not been affected and ratepayers who received their rates

assessments by email will have received their correct amount.“Council apologises for the confusion this has caused these customers. We are ensuring that all correct rates invoices are received at least 14 days in advance of the due date.”If you have any questions about your invoice, call the council on 546 0200.

Things are looking up for Nelson’s recreational and commercial scallopers with surveys showing stocks returning to Tasman Bay for the first time in a decade. Tasman Bay has not been fished commercially since scallop populations collapsed in 2005, with recreational catches also declining dramatically during that period. However, surveys carried out by the Challenger Scallop Enhancement Company, which manages the enhancement and harvesting for commercial sector around the top of the South Island, indicate that scallops are making a comeback. Company chief executive John Reid says surveys carried out in May to assess stocks showed a promising new scallop bed in Tasman Bay extending from Peppin Island along the eastern shoreline to Cape Souci. Challenger hopes to take 15 tonnes from the area when commercial fishing starts in September - it will be the first commercial scallop catch in Tasman Bay for a decade. John says the area has a

“possible biomass at 72 tonnes” although, interestingly, the scallops are at a depth of 20 to 30m which is deeper than normal. He says that may be too deep for recreational vessels to dredge and recommends trying the shallower beds in Delaware Bay. “It’s early days but our guys have been surprised,” John says. “It seems as though the scallops are coming back in the deeper water where they are displacing the oysters. John says the scientists don’t know why the scallops are now living in deeper water in Tasman Bay, although there is

a suggestion that it is because there is a “good flow of clearer water out there”. John says a fleet of nine commercial boats will take around 50 tonnes, 52 less than is permitted in the Total Allowable Commercial Catch, from the Top of the South’s Scallop Area 7 this season. The commercial fishery usually commences in the second week of September and lasts for about 20 days. Fisherman Troy Dando says the scallops will be out of reach for most recreational fishermen this season, but it is good news overall.

Hockey coach’s sudden death shocks community: The sudden death of a Nelson hockey coach during a match at Saxton Field on Saturday has shocked members of the Nelson hockey com-munity. Mark Wilkens, coach, manager and life member of the Federal Hockey Club, was giving a team talk at half time when he collapsed on the field. Nelson Hockey regional development manager and close friend of Mark, Craig Brett, says he was well known in the hockey community and his death is a big loss. “This lad’s been playing hock-ey for fifty years. It’s a bit of a shock to the old hockey fraternity.”

Car breaks new barrier: A Toyota Hi-lux collided with the new barrier in-stalled along Whakatu Dr on Sunday afternoon after suffering a mechanical failure. The front right wheel has bent at the axle and around 11 posts have been stripped from the barrier by the vehicle. Police were diverting drivers into the right hand lane. Nobody was injured in the crash. The 2.5km wire rope edge barrier was installed last month at a cost of $200,000.

Hunter falls down waterfall while chasing pig: A 70 year old Nelson pig hunter was airlifted to Nelson Hospital after falling down a 10 metre waterfall on Friday. The hunter was reportedly in “hot pursuit of his prey” at around 1pm when he fell down the waterfall, knock-ing himself unconscious and breaking his leg. Although the fall was steep it was not a vertical drop. He was hunting in the Buller Gorge.

Police chase ends in car crash: Two al-leged burglars on a month-long crime spree around the South Island were arrested in Tahunanui on Wednesday

after they crashed their car into a tree while running from police. The driver failed to stop for police and was pursued for a short distance. Police abandoned the pursuit due to the dangerous man-ner of the driving. A short time later the car was located crashed in Golf Rd, Tahunanui. Two women and a man ran from the vehicle. A 27 year old woman and a 22 year old woman were arrested shortly after. Danielle Foster, 22 and Natasha Lousley, 27 appeared in the Nelson District Court on Thursday fac-ing charges including obtaining money by deception, burglary and theft.

Crash at Whakatu Estate intersection: Police attended a crash at the Wakatu Estate intersection on Friday afternoon after a vehicle collided with an 18 year-old motorcyclist driving along Main Rd Stoke. A man at the scene, who did not wish to be named, says a person was taken away by an ambulance. Traffic slowed to a trickle as police diverted it around the scene.

One of Nelson’s most valued parenting institutes has put the call out for new members and volunteers, saying that they are running on “bare minimum”.The Nelson District Parents Centre has been helping local parents for more than 50 years and relies 100 per cent on volunteers to deliver its courses. But the centre is now struggling, having gone from 22 members to just five within the space of a year, and are currently without a president. The centre has been a rock for many new parents over the years, running popular childbirth education and parenting courses, and helping new mums to form coffee groups.Current treasurer, Michelle Hunt, who has been a member for two years, says that new members and volunteers are needed in order for them to run more courses and hold more events. “It takes quite a lot of man power

to keep everything going, and we can’t do it running on five people,” says Michelle. “We are really stretching our resources. I don’t know what will happen.”She says part of the reason they are struggling for new members is that mums are going back to work earlier. Also, at one stage last year they had no childbirth educators, and had to source them from Blenheim. “Because we weren’t running any antenatal classes there was

no follow through to the other courses,” says Michelle. “But we now have three educators on board and are going strong this year. We are also offering the courses in Motueka too.”Committee member Bec McEwan says that although there are only five of them, they are still continuing to provide the same high quality services. “We’re just working a lot harder to do it,” she says. While Michelle says it’s common to go through ‘lulls’ she hopes

that more people will put their hand up to help. “It’s a great way to give back to the community, and it’s not just for mums – we’d love it if some nanas came down to help out during the courses. Just getting the biscuits and tea ready, or holding onto a baby to give some of the mums a break,” she says. “They don’t need to commit to coming every week, every little bit helps.”Michelle says that if they are able to get more members, they are hoping to run some extra courses, such as postnatal pilates, taming your toddler, more first aid and toilet training courses, and a new course with a sleep consultant aimed at helping with sleeping issues. “We would also like to run some more guest speaker evenings, like we have done recently with Nathan Mikaere-Wallis,” she says. To find out more about volunteering, contact Michelle on 0211170437, or email [email protected].

The $12 million redevelopment of the Suter Art Gallery is nearing the halfway mark and is due to be finished before Christmas 2016.Suter director Julie Catchpole says the build has been going well. “It would be a dream if we could open to coincide with arts festival next year, we’ll have to see about that.”She says one of the tricky tasks, when relocating back to the old redeveloped premises from their temporary Halifax St gallery, will be transporting the artworks back.“We have to set up new storage systems in the new building and that’s something we’re really looking forward to; having everything fitted out and equipped to safely look after our many wonderful artworks.”

Shareholders in Waimea Village received their first dividend just 18 months after they purchased the 172-home village following a bitter, two-year dispute with former owners Michael and Carolyn Wright. One hundred and forty-one of the village’s residents brought a share in Waimea Village 2013 in a deal brokered by former Tasman district councillor Kit Maling. The deal was negotiated after a stand-off between the Wrights and residents who objected to plans to increase their monthly lease from $182 to $284. Waimea Village’s new owners immediately set the monthly fee at $135 for the shareholders, who got more good news last Wednesday when they received a dividend of $180 at the annual general meeting. Shareholders were also told that the company has already paid off well over half of their $282,000 mortgage on the property. Waimea Village board chairman Trevor Tuffnell says they have made significant progress since purchasing the village in 2013. They had reduced their mortgage, started a maintenance programme, reduced fees, paid a dividend and started to build up an infrastructure fund. “One lady was telling me that, in the past, she would go to a meeting in the village and go away in tears, and now she is going away with a smile. It’s been a very satisfying 18 months for us.” The village has about 250 residents who own or rent their houses and pay rates to the Tasman District Council. Owners who purchased a $8200 share in Waimea Village in 2013, pay a monthly fee of $135, while leaseholders pay $182.

A Nelson woman with a passion for conservation has been recognised for more than 30 years of services to Forest and Bird.Julie McLintock has recently been awarded with the ‘Old Blue Award’ at a Forest and Bird meeting in Wellington, in honour of her dedication and hard work to help protect native wildlife and restore their habitat. The award is presented annually to a handful of members who have done outstanding work in conservation. The Cable Bay resident, who is also a founding member of the Nelson Botanical Society, joined Forest and Bird in the 1980s and has been involved in everything from organising planting days, monthly public meetings, weeding, and picking up rubbish on the beach. “I just do the organising,” she says, “everybody else involved deserves this award just as much as me.”One of the major projects Julie has been involved with is the Paremata Flats restoration. The project, which started in 2007, involves the major trapping of stoats and rats in the estuary. Now the area, which was once derelict of native bird life, flourishes with the rare South Island Fernbird and Banded Rail.

“The bird population has exploded and I’m so proud of the fact we have all these birds,” she says. “There used to be nothing.” Another project she has played a key role in is the Pelorus Bat recovery project, which began in 2011. They have been trapping mice, rats, weasels, stoats, ferrets and possums, in order to save the struggling long-tailed bat population. “If we don’t do something they are going to disappear like in other parts in New Zealand. That’s why Forest and Bird gets out there.” Julie’s passion for all things native started later if life, after growing up in native-barren mid-Canterbury. “When I did get involved my whole outlook changed and I could see all that work that needed doing. Now I want to show people things that I missed when I was younger,” she says. Julie says the award is something that will stay with her forever, as a reminder of her passion for all things native. “I’m just so proud to have it,” she says.

When Sue Pratt embarked on a search to find out about her fa-ther’s past, she didn’t expect to find out so much information from just one piece of paper. It all began in 2003 when Sue took her father’s birth certificate to the Family History Centre in Stoke, as she wanted to find out where her fostered father, Norman Er-nest Bailey, had come from. “I had always wondered, what’s the story behind this and why did his mother leave him,” says Sue. “The birth certificate was all the information I had about his mother.”After visiting Catriena Wilkin-son, a family history consult-ant at the centre, Sue found out more than she had ever imagined she would. The birth certificate uncovered that Norman had three full-blooded siblings – two brothers and one sister, and also two half-brothers and a half-sis-ter. But the story itself is not quite so happy. It turns out his young mother had gone to live in the Waikato and had an ‘illegitimate’ relationship with a farmer, who was already married with five boys. She fell pregnant with Norman, and gave

birth to him at a home for single mothers in Wellington in 1913, at the age of 18. She left him there, where he was an orphan for six years until he was fostered. His mother fell pregnant again to the same man, but this time had to have the baby in Auckland as you couldn’t have two babies at the same place. She went on to have two more children to the farmer. “She wouldn’t have had anyway of supporting them back then, so she had to foster them,” says Sue. “It’s not a very happy story – I sort of felt a bit flat when I finally finished working out where my father came from.”Sue has gone on to contact many of her relatives, who are mostly in Auckland. “Some of them had mixed feelings, as they didn’t know my father existed, but they have sent me various photos.” After 12 years of research and many folders of photos, Sue can safely say this is her ‘hobby’ now. “It really is a lot easier than you

think. Once you start, you never stop,” she says.Sue says none of this would be possible without the help of the Family History Centre, who are working to promote Family His-tory Month throughout August. Catriena from the centre, says that anyone who wants to find

out more about their family his-tory can go along to the centre, free of charge.“Researching your family can be a real eye opener for some, but it can also give a real apprecia-tion of what our forebears went through,” says Catriena. “It helps bring them to life rather than just

a name on a piece of paper.”Elma Turner and Stoke Libraries will be hosting a range of sessions during Family History Month for those who are interested in start-ing their family research. The Nelson Provincial Museum will also be holding tours of Isel Park’s research facility.

Blokes in Sheds Tour, Tuesday, July 28: Life Education Trust chairperson Michelle Fitzgerald says that their Blokes in Sheds fundraising tour has received interest from five shed owners after their article in the Nelson Weekly. Out of those five, three will definitely be taking part in the tour. Michelle says it was a fantastic response and that the article made a big difference in getting the spots for their tour filled.

Wedding dress register, Tuesday, July 21: Donna Hippolite says she had great feedback to her story, which featured a fortnight ago in Nelson Weekly. Donna is collecting wedding dresses to “pay forward” to people. “Just last week a young guy called me because his fiancée bought a dress but it wasn’t made well and didn’t fit her. His uncle had seen the article in the paper and gave him my number. She came around last week and we found one that fitted her perfectly. I was so happy, it made her day.”Donna says she’s had another few dresses donated and has another bride-to-be coming to her house this week to try one on.

Knight Templar, Tuesday, July 28: Nelson Weekly would like to apologise to Nelson Knight Templar’s David Marsh and Phil Ivamy for the incorrect caption that was used in the article ‘Knights Templar in Nelson? Who knew?’ It was actually Phil Ivamy pictured in the historical re-enactment of an initiation ceremony.

Twenty-four mums and their babies turned up to the Victory Community Centre on Friday morning to be part of this year’s Big Latch On Nelson event. The worldwide event is run every year as part of world breastfeeding week and aims to normalise breastfeeding as part of everyday life.Event organiser Tara Hope from Mum4Mum Nelson, says they were thrilled with this year’s turnout. “It’s all about getting mums together and getting them confident about feeding in public,” she says. “It’s also a great way to meet other breastfeeding mums.”The event saw children of all ages participating, ranging from 10 week old triplets to a six year old. Local businesses donated spot prizes, and there was entertainment for older children. The event began in New Zealand in 2005, and has now taken off globally with more than 30 countries ‘latching on.’Tara also runs a monthly breastfeeding support group at Ecomoon, and is also available for advice any time, through Mum4Mum breastfeeding support.

623 bars on the rocks:623 on the Rocks is unfortunately situated on the State Highway, mak-

ing access difficult. When the Southern Link is built, and Rocks Road becomes a local road with a fantastic walkway and cy-cleway, this business along with others in

Tahunanui will boom. Cynthia McConville.

Car crashes into new wire barriers on Whakatu Drive:

Appears as though the vehicle may have suffered a mechanical issue

prior to crashing. Cable barrier performed perfectly. Allan Hoult.

Spent three weeks on that bloody road putting up that

fence - at least it works fine. Braden Holland.

Proof of concept? Jim Mitchell.

Hunter, aged 70, breaks leg:Seventy years and still out there enjoying a lifestyle

that many people in 2015 have long forgotten. No rest homes/processed foods/ or self opinionat-ed idiots in the bush. Just good old fashioned exercise, fresh air and occasionally the bonus of some of the best-eating organic meat! Get outside people, step outside your comfort zone and congratulate a 70 year old man for having the health and fitness to live his life as he chooses! Joel Dickson.

Hope the guy's okay! Good on him still going hunting

at 70! Tori Hunter.

Aw, there's a shame. Huh....NOT! Good on ya, Mr Piggy.

Gillian Frowen.

TPPA protests on Waimea Rd:How embarrassing. Where were they when we negotiated the other

1700 trade agreements in the exact same secrecy? Clint Heine.

They are literally the most annoy-ing bunch of people ever.

Angela Newby.

It's odd that people find them an-noying - wait till they realise the

impact of TPPA on the ordinary people of New Zealand - maybe then they might re-alise that the 'annoying' and 'embarrassing' people, had actually made the effort to find out the details of the seedy dealing of our corrupt government. Jacqui Roche.

Well done, guys. I think signing this would be another huge mistake to

explain to our children and grandchildren. Jacqueline Gibson.

Whakatu Drive average speed 113km say NZTA:

Do you seriously think the average speeds during the NZTA survey of

Whakatu Drive were 113 km/h? This is at

least 15km/h faster than the national aver-age, and anyone who uses that road often knows that few drivers exceed 90km/h. It sounds like the police are feeding you some creative mathematics, with two iso-lated high speeds inflating the figures, in order to generate more "speed kills" head-lines. It pays to take their propaganda with a huge grain of salt. Lou Girardin.

Nelsonians most likely to change power company. Are you happy with yours?

Power company's want you to stay. I'm with Just Energy, but looking to

change. Colin White.

We told our power company we were moving and they gave us a

cash incentive to stay! Tim Kolk.

Was not happy with Just Energy so switched to Energy Online, and so

far so good. Giselle Fish.

Yes, we shopped around and changed from Trustpower to En-

ergy Online. Saved money already. Diane Chandler.

Was with Just Energy, switched to Energy Online. Savings are huge!

Well worth the change if you are finding power prices way too high. Great prompt payment discount. Cheapest out there now, excellent service. Cindy Rigg.

WEDNESDAY 24 JUNE 2015 PH 03 5282088

By Tim O’ConnellWhile the rest of the South

Island encountered rain, snow

and pestilence it was typical

Tasman sunshine at Kaiteriteri

Beach on Sunday as hundreds

descended on the shoreline for

the Riwaka School Mid-Winter

Festival. Bands, performances and the

standard array of hot and tasty

food made for a welcome way

to spend a winter morning, while

children were entertained by

bouncy castles, mini jeeps and

trains as well as a big dig for

A duck and dip kind of day for winter fest

prizes around the golden sands.

The main attractions of the day

were the mid-winter dip and the

duck race, both of which drew

plenty of entries from locals and

out of towners keen to support

Riwaka School.Fairies, bumblebees and

superheroes were among the

costumes on display as the swim-

mers gathered for the former.Jeanette Clark from Lower

Moutere was found in pre-plunge

contemplation of the icy fate that

awaited her. “Everyone has their bucket list

of things to do, and this is one of

mine,” she said. With the tide in for the 11am

start of the dip there was a very

short run from the shore to the

ocean, leaving the hundred or so

brave folk who entered little time

to chicken out. Admirably, a handful managed

to remain in the water for an

extended period of time to milk

the moment, although it should

be noted that most of these peo-

ple were female. For the rest however, the

sequence of events once sub-

merged was akin to someone

abruptly hitting the rewind button

on a DVD.The duck race was a slightly

more drawn out affair, yet attract-

ed just as much interest as the

earlier event, although it wasn’t

long before the nature of inani-

mate object racing set in and a

good portion of the entered ducks

were soon bobbing listlessly in

the lagoon,Speaking to the Guardian after

an extremely successful day in

the sun, Riwaka School Principal

Fraser Campbell was ecstatic

with the public response to the

event.“There was just a real good

buzz around the place and a real

connection between the commu-

nity and school,” he said. Showing leadership and

immense fortitude, Mr Campbell

took to the water for the dip along

with Deputy Principal Katherine

Sefton, a feat which he says was

“better than coffee”.The Mid-Winter Festival raised

close to $9000 for the school, a

total which is believed to be up on

previous years.

Development boom for region

White water wonderMost of the 250 plus competitors at

the weekend’s Buller Festival were

from out of town, but Nelson boy

Tommy McDowell made sure he

was up there with the best – taking

out the C1 open men’s slalom. The Buller Festival is New Zealand’s

premier white water event and at-tracted a large crowd of out-of-town

competitors – including a former

Olympian from the UK.The festival started off with the

popular boater cross, an event

which sees kayakers race together

down the river. Over the course of

the weekend there was also kayak

and canoe slalom, rafter cross, SUP

race and the classic cardboard cup,

which involves making a vessel out

of cardboard and tape and taking it

down the river. The event is held every year and

showcases exactly why Murchison

is known as the “four river plains”,

with its top spots being used by

hundreds of competitors over the

weekend.Event spokesperson Sophia Mulder

says this was no doubt the biggest

weekend on the Murchison calen-dar, with plenty of money spent in

the town. “I think this year we had a lot of

people coming from further. We

had a lot of international competi-tors and not just professional ath-letes but some just here for a good

social time,” she says. “There was a good long queue eve-rywhere, the Four Square was flat

out, the petrol station was flat out.

I don’t think they’ve sold as much

bread, meat and beer as they did this

weekend.” Tommy McDowell competes in the canoe

slalom at the Buller Festival over the weekend.

A 120-site holiday park on Lower Queen

St, a $50 million lifestyle village on Wens-

ley Rd in Richmond and a 95 lot rural resi-

dential subdivision in Wakefield are the

latest developments to get the green light

as the Tasman district continues to grow.

Queen St Caravans and Motorhomes has

already started stage one of their holiday

park development which will be open in

time for next summer. Ben Nevis Holdings

had a resource consent for their 95 lot ru-

ral residential subdivision on Totara View

Rd, Edward St and Gossey Drive North in

Wakefield signed off last Tuesday, while

commissioners have approved the Olive

Estate lifestyle village at 109 Wensley Rd.

A resource consent for the Lower Queen

St holiday park was granted last Septem-

ber, and co-owner Rod Yarrell says they

are presently working on installing fencing

and the underground cabling and water

pipes. He says it has been a big job with

600 metres of trenches, 3.5 kilometres of

electric cabling and 210 metres of fencing.

“We’ve already spent four months on this

stage. We are powering-up 50 sites for self-

contained motorhomes and caravans and

then we’ll get started on the ablution block

and laundry. “We have consents for 120 sites but we’ll

probably only put in around 90 so they’ll

all be a bit bigger. There’s also going to be

camping sites and 12 cabins but we won’t

be taking permanent residents.”The holiday park is being developed on the

site of Rod and his partner Linda Manera’s

business, Queen St Caravans and Mo-

torhomes at 442 Lower Queen St and Rod

says they have already been getting inquir-

ies from prospective customers.“Demand will be huge judging by the

Still a volunteer at 94 years oldWhen Arthritis New Zealand needed a local volunteer to help promote its cause and raise some money, the man to put his hand up was a 94 year old World War 2 veteran.Maurice Abrahams is a legend in Nelson. He still plays in the Nelson Brass Band, has served as a Freemason for more than 70 years and volunteers for Arthritis NZ after developing two forms of ar-thritis.

Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard. “But I only save the ladies,” he joked.Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “commu-nity concierge” washing windows and greeting custom-ers. He handed out orange tokens which his customers could use to vote for Arthritis NZ and help the charity receive cash from Z, through its Good in the Hood pro-motion. Maurice says he got relief from his treatment so wanted to give back, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be offered a job after his efforts. “Sue’s right into it and I just follow along, but when people respond you feel good.”

NZ Post will bring its mail from the North Island to Nelson for three to four weeks in April, as an upgrade of navigation equip-ment is carried out at Blenheim Airport,

where it usually goes. The work in Blenhe-im means the plane – a Fokker 27 Friend-ship – will arrive in Nelson each day at 6am and its noise will have a “noticeable” impact. But the 6am landing is much better than 3am, which is when NZ Post usually flys in and the time they had proposed to land in Nelson. Nelson Airport Ltd chief execu-

tive Kaye McNabb says the delay to 6am will have a big impact on NZ Post, but they weren’t willing to have such an impact on locals during the middle of the night.“If the aircraft arrived at 3am I am sure we would be inundated with calls wondering what was going on,” says Kaye. “After discussions with the operator it was agreed the aircraft would delay its ar-

rival until 6am, to minimise the effect. The changed schedule will have a significant impact on NZ Post with the inevitable flow on effect through the distribution and de-livery chain, so we’re pleased that the op-erator has been so willing to co-operate for the benefit of local residents.”The first early morning landing is expected to be on April 7.

Pioneer orchards Arthur McKee was an established orchardist in Riwaka when he bought more than a thousand hec-tares of the Coastal hills in 1908. The land had reverted to manuka scrub after failed farming ventures in the

1850s but the Moutere clay was suit-able for apple growing. McKee re-named the area Tasman and formed Tasman Fruit Lands Ltd. He cleared and replanted the land in apple trees for absentee owners, to be handed over as orchards in production.

Tom-linson was born on 27 Novem-ber 1879 in Waimea West, Nel-son, New Zealand. Tomlinson's military paperwork lists his next of kin as Miss M Tomlin-son (sister), Nelson, NZ. Tom-linson worked for himself as a carpenter before enlisting for service during World War One. His date of attestation is listed as 24 May 1917 and he served in New Zealand from 3 June 1918.

Lead-lighting is an art form that Pauline English is passionate about. While many don’t class it as art, the beautiful and creative scenes that Pauline can make with different colours and textures of glass is something to admire. Most recently, Pauline was involved in cleaning, repairing and strengthening the stunning stained glass window that can now be seen in the new Stoke Methodist Church. With painters and tradesmen waiting to do their bit in the conversion of the building, Pauline was forced to complete the window in just three weeks, half the time she would have normally taken. “It was hard work, [the panels] were very dirty, there was a lot of old putty and lead that had to come off the outside of it and [it took] a lot of careful handling,” says Pauline. “A lot of lead-lighters don’t like doing repairs, but to me it’s all part of it. The challenge is quite rewarding in itself and seeing something restored is really cool.” Pauline began her craft over 20 years ago through a course offered in Westport. She then landed her dream job working for Glass Craft. When the shop closed, Pauline tried to work in other jobs but nothing compared to lead-lighting. “I was really disappointed when [the shop shut] but I’m also really determined and I think if you love what you do, you’ll always find a way of doing it.”Pauline now runs Top Shelf Lead-Lighting from Richmond Glass in Nelson and says she loves working with customers to make a truly special feature for their home. The Stoke Methodist Church was Pauline’s fourth church for the repair of stained glass windows. She has also worked on a number of old, historical homes around Nelson and completed work for clients as far as Auckland. Her work can be seen at Lustre Gallery and Art 203.

We have been at Healthkids for five years now with another three left to go. Both my children have absolutely loved everything from the teachers, the play areas, the outings, the experiences and learning given to them at every opportunity. Plus I like the fact that the staff are consistent and have been there for a long time. Both children have felt very secure and cared for. Having two children with severe allergies and eczema was a worry, yet the teachers are very knowledgeable about this and are able to assist with additional moisturising and monitoring of them at meal times. Healthkids feels more like a family to us now than a preschool.

Jo Moon On our second visit to Health Kids, my two year danced in the parking lot, happily saying “my school, this is my school, I love it here!” Hands down, Health kids has the best backyard playground in Nelson and I can’t imagine better teachers or teachers who care more than they do.”

I was instantly impressed with Juliet Robinson from Quinovic Nelson at our first meeting. It was clear she was running a professional results-focused business; so much so, I made the decision to partner with Quinovic Nelson straight away. Every dealing since that first meeting has been clear and hassle-free. Just what I am looking for in a property manager.

Gareth Lawes

Thanks for all your efforts over the years managing the property, it has been greatly appreciated by myself. You have yourself a great team there.

Chris Jansen

Many thanks for all your and Quinovic’s assistance over the years. The Quinovic approach took away any stress of being an absent home owner, providing total peace of mind. I now and in the future will use my Nelson Quinovic experience as the benchmark on property letting companies. We visited the property during our recent visit to NZ and were very happy with the standard of upkeep and tidiness of the property. I hope that in the future we will have the opportunity to use Quinovic again.

Clive Rumph - Taxi Driver“I am a Christchurch Taxi driver and I have always been proud of my eye sight. Now I m 67 and even with new glasses my eye sight has been failing (fuzzy print when reading the paper). Well someone recommended I take Sujon Blackcurrant powder. After using for just over a week my

vision is clear, no more fuzzy print plus a bonus of more energy.”

Sharee Dahlberg N.D. - Naturopath“As a naturopath working in a local health shop for four years, I have been amazed by the genuine positive feedback from this product. It has been incredibly popular and just had such an amazing enthusiasm and gratitude for it by people utilising it. As a naturopath I have come to believe one of our greatest health foundations is our diet, so I am so

supportive of utilising highly bioavailable nutrients through superfoods. Sujon blackcurrant powder has just been an excellent addition to my own diet, and I certainly recommend it. Being so rich in bioavailable vitamin c, bioflavonoids, and having an incredible antioxidant activity, which is so protective and important in this day and age, it is a great superfood supplement, that many are using for different advantages. From my own personal experience also of using it during pregnancy, for all its optimal health benefits, supporting my energy levels, and notably to help keep iron levels up, (vitamin c greatly helps iron to absorb). I take it as a yummy zesty health shot and love it. I have been really impressed.”

Liam Flynn - Professional Basketball Coach“I can’t speak highly enough about Sujon. It makes a huge difference to concentration levels and reduced muscle soreness considerably.”

Kelly Muirden - Summited New Zealand’s highest peak, Mount Cook“Sujon Blackcurrant powder gave me the ability to train harder and longer for the climb ... it helped me recover phenomenally quicker. I was stoked, following the climb that week I was out running, muscle fatigue was non–existent.”

I was seriously thinking about replacing the glass in my shower after supermarket products that promised the earth, didn’t deliver. Then my friend suggested the Water Stain Doctor. It came up crystal clear, very impressed.

Sarah Thanks for the great job you guys did on our boat windows. Unfortunately, the Mrs won’t let me buy a new boat now as she says it looks brand new again!

We had been so unsure about how to choose cabinets which would tie in with the existing character of our villa kitchen. We need not have worried, you were very patient, giving very good advise and it certainly helped being able to see how it would look with your computer 3D plans. Keeping up with technology, even understanding some of the technology we have access to, can be a struggle. Fortunately for us, The Audiophile is here to make using our gadgets that bit easier. It’s been ten very successful years in business for Dan-iel O’Connell, who owns both The Audiophile and Tasman Satellite Services at their base in the Wakatu Estate.Daniel started on his techno-logical path back in 2000 when he began working for a com-pany called Mainland Aerials in Christchurch. At that stage, the business was the largest instal-lation company for Sky TV and was also heavily involved with the audio and visual industry. After training and working for them for five years, Daniel ended up managing their Nel-son Marlborough contracts and in 2005 took the company over, rebranding it Tasman Satellite Services. From there he began working with Auckland fran-chise business, The Audiophile, and brought the franchise for the Top of the South Island. Eventually, Daniel bought out the Auckland franchise and now the business is run alongside Tasman Satellite Ser-vices, here in Nelson.Tasman Satellite Services now runs all the Sky TV contracts for Marlborough, Nelson and the West Coast, which encompasses around 35,000 or so cus-

tomers. The business operates thanks to 16 qualified technicians who are on the road seven days a week, performing services such as maintenance, upgrades and installations. These include Freeview installs, UHF and satellites, plus connecting televisions and

outlets to bedrooms. Any-thing beyond those basic services, customers can talk to the technicians at The Audiophile. Tasman Satel-lite Services also looks after a lot of the hotels, motels, bars and restaurants around the region and, to top it off, they have a strong commit-ment to health and safety practices, with the team having completed their height-safe training and harness training.Daniel believes there are a number of qualities they possess that has led to their success these past ten years.

“We’ve been really focused on offering a really good service, that’s probably the key thing. We choose high quality, specialist products that you can’t get from chain stores, and we give the customer a great experi-ence by making it easy for them.”Offering good service also needs a solid team, and staff from The Audiophile and Tasman Satellite Ser-vices are people you can rely on. “We’re a mixture, we’ve got some guys who have worked with us from Mainland Aerial days, some have come from other

companies and some have come fresh into the in-dustry just with a passion for electronics, and we’ve trained them and up-skilled them,” says Daniel.Being part of the team also means staying up to date with the latest products on the market. While Dan-iel attends trade shows here and abroad, research-ing advances in home audio, visual and auto-mation options, the team is always learning about the next stage of techno-logical development. It’s a fast paced industry at the moment and Daniel says that’s why The Au-diophile has chosen to stick to key brands and suppliers that offer full back-up and training. “Most brands will roll out a new product every 12 months so we have to do all the training again to master things, like what amp works with what speakers and how to control it,” says Daniel. For many, home entertainment is a luxury, but that doesn’t mean it has to be beyond reach. The Au-diophile can design a system for any style of home, on any budget, so anyone can enjoy the benefits of a custom-designed electronic system. The design process begins at the start of a new build or reno-vation when The Audiophile sit down with their customers and the house plan to identify a solu-tion that best meets their needs. A smooth, sleek, acoustically-efficient, even unnoticeable, system can be achieved with the expertise of The Audio-

phile’s design team. When it comes to audio, The Audiophile has the best in speakers, whether they’re mounted into the wall or ceiling, are floor standing or you need port-able Bluetooth speakers or speakers for your com-puter. The business stocks a range of amps includ-

ing UK brand Cambridge Audio, the Yamaha RXV range and Paradigm, all of which are exclusive to The Audiophile, so you won’t find them in chain stores.A home entertainment set-up wouldn’t be com-plete without a seriously good television, which is why The Audiophile is solely committed to Panasonic visual equip-ment. Everyone knows television has gone digi-tal, and for the viewer that means better pictures

and sound with on-screen TV guides. However, The Audiophile can help you achieve other view-ing options in your home, including HD, 3D and 4K TV for the ultimate cinema experience, and distributed video for more than one television in your home, displaying crystal clear TV, movies and even offers you the ability to keep an eye on your security camera video signals wherever you are. With televisions and other devices capable of streaming music or movies, it’s important for homeowners to have their house wired for data to ensure reliable connectivity. Houses used to have a basic router, but because a lot of modern

The Audiophile can design a network sys-tem with all the key spots hard-wired, such as tel-evisions and computers. For wireless devices, The Audiophile can put in quality wireless repeaters so the client can seamlessly use their devices throughout the house, and even outside. The Audiophile also works in with other key partners to offer their customers a fully custom-ised security system.

To the less technologically savvy that may sound like a bit of a headache, but The Audiophile are able to tie it all together with home automation, and that isn’t just limited to your sound and visual equipment. There are different levels of automa-tion, and from your mobile phone or a key pad on the wall you can control almost everything electrical. Whether it’s lighting, heating, security, blinds, audio or your pool cover - imagine com-ing home on a cold night and, thanks to home automation, your lights are on and the heaters

Competition is keen in Nelson Net-ball’s Grade 1 with not a lot separat-ing the eight teams. The experienced Jacks Navy lead the competition with three games of the championship round played. Stoke PowerSigns, Suburban Blue and Nelson College for Girls 10A are tied for second. Nayland College A is at the bottom, however its standing was not reflected in its close loss to Nelson Girls 10A on Saturday at Saxton Stadi-um.Nayland began well and went out to a handy 3 -1 lead, however some good straight line play by Nelson Girls gave them an 8-7 advantage at the first break. Nayland did not have the same flow through court, however Taylah Kirker’s introduction at wing attack for the sec-ond quarter provided punch off the line and through the offensive third. There was considerable turnover by both teams, only to be once again turned over before the ball was in the shooters’ hand. The score was shared 6 apiece in the second quarter.Nayland made several positional chang-es at the major break with the most ef-fective being the “two Tayler/Taylah’s” teaming up in the shooting circle. Goal shoot Tayler Boeyen was on the receiv-ing end of a number a deft long feeds

from Taylah Kirker. Both girls were pre-pared to put the shot up and they fin-ished with commendable stats of 90 per cent. Nayland didn’t have it all they own way as Nelson’s defensive duo of Jaime Archer and Jessica Williams worked hard to apply pressure on the shot.Nelson took the third stanza 10-7 on the back of some great shooting by Tia Van Diepen, who returned to the court at goal shoot after sitting out the second quarter.Nayland left their best until last and, although they tied 10-all, they were on the wrong side of the ledger at full time, coming up short 30-34. Nayland would have been disappointed at missing out on a bonus point (finishing within three goals or less) as their play certainly de-served one.Nayland’s Mae Merritt worked hard through court to restrict ball flow, while goal keep Rosie Wild could be well pleased with her efforts. She gathered in four well-timed intercepts, positioned well for the rebound and recorded a number of deflections. Nelson’s Court-ney Lankshear contributed well in the second half at wing attack, it was great to see her hassling on defence and she pulled in two impressive intercepts. Centre Olivia Avery was steady through court, while Leea Conning worked hard to keep her opposite off the circle edge.

Nayland fall just short in Grade 1 clash

RUGBY: Nelson College still needs a win against Christch-urch Boys' High in their last round robin game in the University of Canterbury Crusaders region secondary schools rugby competition in Christchurch this Saturday, to have a chance of making the semi-finals. Nelson defeated Rangiora 38-0 on Saturday to secure a bonus point win to move to 42 points. However, third and fourth-placed St Be-des and Shirley need to lose their games on Saturday for Nelson to make the semis.

MULTISPORT: Nelson multi-sport athlete Trevor Voyce will have his first serious hit-out of the season when he lines up in Sunday's Gibbs Hill Challenge in Golden Bay, while Naomi Whitehead and Suzie Wood head a strong women's field. The race starts with a 23km road ride from Takaka to Wai-nui, before competitors run 21km around the northern end of Abel Tasman National Park and then cycle back to Takaka. The race starts at 9.15am on Sunday.

Kendo literally means “way of the sword” and is a modern Japanese martial art. In Nelson, Kendo is now a sport to less than 20 people across both the Shoshin Kendo Club and Nelson Kendo Club.Descended from swordsman-ship, the sport uses bamboo swords called Shinai and pro-tective armour, combining martial arts practices and val-ues with heart-pumping physi-cal activity. This year, the two Nelson clubs will be jointly hosting the 2015 New Zealand Kendo Federa-tion Winter Camp, a seminar and training weekend for all members registered with the national federation. The seminar will be lead by Morioka Hiromitsu Sensei, 7th Dan, along with two other high grade Kendoka from Japan. No matter what age or level, Kendoka (practitioners of ken-do) from around the country will be gathering in Nelson to take part in the camp, which will be run over the weekend of Saturday 15 and Sunday 16, August, in the Stoke Hall. “For us, it’s our first nationally

run event, so we want to do a good job of that, but also to do the training [is important to us]. We probably think we’re awesome, but we need people like the 7th and 6th Dans to show us we’re not,” says Sho-shin Kendo Clubs’ Rayon Mac-kenzie. “We go to these things all the time because we think we need to get better at Kendo. It also keeps us in touch with the new techniques, the new rules and especially other types

of Kendo.”An AGM determines who will host the camp the following year, and clubs are able to offer the skills of experienced tutors thanks to New Zealand con-nections with a number of high grade Kendoka in Japan.

Anyone interested in learning more about the Nelson Kendo clubs can visit the New Zealand Kendo Federation website at www.kendo.org.nz.

Reports are coming in of good catches of groper, kingfish, snapper, blue cod and other species too. With more modern and reliable sounders and GPS units, many lo-cals are up-skilling their chances of finding and identifying the fish that they wish to target. It can be very satisfying to be able to use your own sounder to search out and successfully catch fish for your family and friends. Then, to be able to use certain fish-ing techniques and gear to hone your skills even further. This is some of what our Dawn-breakers Fishing Club is about, meeting others and sharing infor-

This is a day to come and meet others and discuss how the club's competitions and events work to see if you would be inter-ested in joining the club on that day. Proud sponsor of the 2015 Champion Tahunanui Tigers

Tahunanui Tigers have been crowned Tasman Rugby League champions after a 30-22 win over Victory Phoenix at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. The see-sawing match was only decided in the final act of the game, when a Tiger scored in the left-hand corner to give his side a six point lead with time up on the clock. Both sides threw everything at the game but the Tigers had the better of the final ten minutes and deserved to come away with the win.Victory scored within the first five minutes of the game, before the Tigers came roaring back into the match to take a 20-6 lead after 30 minutes of play. Victory then started its comeback, scoring ei-ther side of the half-time break and again midway

through the second half to regain the lead, 22-20.From there on it was all Tahuna. The Tigers scored a well-worked try in the right hand corner, which gave them the lead, and then kept the throttle on full bore to score the final try. The win is the Tigers' first championship in the competition’s fifth season. Tigers' captain Phil Asi says he was proud of his players.

"Seeing our big boys keep on running, even though they were tired, that made me want to keep working and I thought that got us through."He says the club has a big family base to it and he was thrilled to see so many supporters there on the day, many dressed up. "It helped us and it was good to celebrate with them after the game."

Tasman Masters swimmers have been benefiting from some world-class coaching since coach Glen Findlay joined their ranks last year.Glen moved to Nelson with his family at the start of last year after spending 20 years at AquaGym and QEII in Christchurch, where he coached three-time Olym-pic and Commonwealth Games medallist swimmer Helen Nor-folk and Olympic triathlete Craig Watson. He also coached a number of na-tional squads at world champs and worked extensively with Par-alympic star Sophie Pascoe and her coach Roly Crichton."I'm from Greymouth, so I only started swimming at AquaGym when we moved to Christchurch when I was 14. We had Brett Naylor as coach and had a really strong squad with swimmers like Anna Simcic."When I finished swimming com-petitively, I joined AquaGym as assistant coach to Brett and after

four-and-a-half years took over the programme as head coach. Then I went to work for the Christchurch City Council devel-oping their aquatic programme - we had one of the biggest junior programmes in the country until the earthquake levelled QEII and Centennial Pool." The earthquake also destroyed the Findlay's home in Parklands, precipitating a move to Nelson. "The earthquake was the catalyst, I suppose, but we were looking at a change before that anyway because coaching is not family-friendly. You are away a lot and the hours are terrible when you have three young children so, when my wife was offered a job here in Nelson, we jumped at the opportunity."Although Glen has put his pro-fessional coaching career on hold, exchanging it for the equal-

ly challenging task of house-hus-banding, he is still keeping his hand-in at the Richmond Aquatic Centre. "When we moved here I wanted to start swimming again, so I joined the Tasman Masters. It's been good getting back in the pool again and it's good to be able to give a small helping hand here and there."They are a very diverse group

with entry level swimmers right through to swimmers who have competed at the Commonwealth Games. It's fun swimming with them and I'm enjoying the coach-ing again, too."It's also been good catching up with the coaches up here - Andy Adair has an extremely good pro-gramme running and Jos Pattison was an absolute legend when I

was coaching in Christchurch - there are definitely a lot of good things happening in swimming in Nelson." But Glen is also learning a thing or two about swimming, after div-ing into open water swimming at the Port Nelson Sea Swim series. He says he was "like a little baby out there" during the first few sea swims, with swimmers from the Tasman Masters that he was lap-ping over 400m in the pool finish-ing over a minute ahead in open water. "I didn't know how far I'd gone or where I was going - it was an eye-opener. But I talked to the other swimmers about it and implemented the things I learned and slowly got it sorted - it's been very enjoyable."Glen is preparing for another first as he trains for his first marathon, in Auckland in November."I've hit the mid-forties so I'm running to try and stay in shape - I want to turn my mono-ab into a stereo-ab. I'm not a runner, but I'd love to go under four hours."
