Fundraising for Pigeon Valley Fire

In February, after the Wakefield Fires, Reuben Prestidge rallied the student body to organise a food

collection for the Red Cross Food Collection centre. It was a great success, with two van loads of

foodstuffs and supplies being delivered to the Emergency Collection Centre. Reuben also organised a

student Mufti day, with $1500 going to the Mayoral Relief Fund.

Nice work, and a big thanks to everyone who donated.

Year 13 Leadership Conference and Mosque visit

In the last week of term one, some of the student leadership group travelled to Christchurch to attend

the GRIP Leadership Conference. This gave the student leaders a chance to mix and mingle, share ideas

and gain new insights into school leadership from a student point of view and was attended by other

school leaders from the Canterbury region.

While in Christchurch the group visited the El Noor Mosque on Deans Avenue to express support to the

Muslim community from Nelson College. Michael Lauer, a Year 11 student, completed a painting, which

students and staff signed with words of support. Michael hand delivered it to some of the Mosque

leaders during this visit.

The group also visited Christs College to hand over a cheque for $1000 – these funds were collected

from the last school mufti day and Christs College will use the money to help in their cause of supporting

directly some of the victims families as two of their staff were shot and wounded in the mosque.

Year 11 Geography Abel Tasman National Park research

field trip

On Thursday 28 March the Year 11 Geography class

embarked on a field trip to the Abel Tasman National

Park. We spent the day in the park with the main purpose

to conduct counts of native bird species on both Adele

Island and Appletree Bay on the mainland coastal track. We

used the services of Abel Tasman Eco Tours to provide

water transfers to and from the mainland, as well as a

guided interpretive tour around Adele Island and Astrolabe

Roadstead and Split Apple Rock (Kaiteriteri).

The class was investigating the differences in the number

and range of birds between each study location. We were

interested in whether there would be more birds on Adele

Island, which has been recently publicised as being

‘predator free’, compared with Appletree Bay. This would

help the class assess the effectiveness of the management

of pests such as rats, stoats and possums in the national

park.

The day was a great success, with settled weather and good

preparation by the students contributing to this. The

students thoroughly enjoyed being out of the classroom,

learning about the protection of native birds in a practical

and relevant way. The primary data collected during the

field trip will be used by the students to write an internal

assessment in the form of a research report.

My thanks to Graeme Peake for accompanying one of the

two groups on the day, as well as driving one of the vans. He

also deserves credit for the excellent photos enclosed with

his article!

NC GYMBUDDY

On Sunday 24th of March a dedicated year 12 business group set up a community gym stall for Race

Unity Day at Victory square. The goal was to create a fun community gym for anyone to come in and try

their service and pump some iron.

The stall was a success with over 100 people getting involved lifting weights with another 50 people

showing membership interest for our open access Community Gym and friendly Personal Training

service.

The boys are trying to make a community gym and offer training for the local Victory Nelson community

so if you have a free space please contact [email protected]

Also, if you have any gym gear or a venue available for them to use please contact the school.

Daniel Rogers - 2019 Marjoribanks Shield winner Josh Sheridan - Senior Athletics Champion & TSS Triathlon

Nelson College Athletic Championships

There were two stand-outs in college athletics this years. Daniel Rogers won the Marjoribanks Shield -

awarded to the winner of both the 80m and 100m. The Shield was first awarded in 1898 for what was

then the 100 yard dash. And Josh Sheridan won the Barron Cup for 400m, Duncan Cup for

800m and Talbot Cup for 1500m, making him the 2019 Senior Champion in Athletics, as well as winning

the Tasman Secondary Schools Triathlon.

Volleyball

It has been a hectic season for our Senior A team.

They performed well in the local NVA league on

Thursday nights. In the first qualifying round for

Nationals they lost to Waimea College in the final.

They then headed off to Christchurch for the

Mainland Competition where they placed 3rd. In

the final round of Tasman Secondary Schools

Championships the team had a great tournament

winning this one and going to Nationals as the

first seed from Tasman. At Nationals the boys

played well and beat some top North Island

schools. After a couple of tough losses in the

crossovers they ended in 11th place.

Our Senior B team had a great season, placing 3rd

in both Tasman qualifiers, beating Nayland A and

Marlborough Boys College A along the way.

Nationals was tough and they competed well

against other schools A teams. After a couple of

narrow losses they ended 12th in Div 3. These

boys were lucky to have the experience of Mr Neil

Anderson as their coach for Nationals.

A massive thanks to Dylan Wells for running this

programme. Thanks to the team managers, stand

in coaches, parents and supporters for another

good season.

There have been some huge achievements in cycling, with Kaio Lart setting a new national record of

11.060sec in Cycling New Zealand’s U17 200m time trial, as well as Gold in individual sprint and the

500m Time Trial. Ari Scott and Keegan Hornblow rode in the Oceania Champs and Keegan has been

selected in the NZ JR Men’s World Cup team.

Rowing

It's the end of a great season for Nelson College, one of the most successful for the school in over four

years. A notable highlight was finishing in 9th place at the national championships, the Aon Maadi Cup

Regatta.

Of course this would not have been possible without the amazing support and guidance from the

coaches of Nelson Rowing Club: Kaye Surgenor, who is unfortunately leaving full time coaching; Joe

Benin, our assistant coach who will take her place; and the two Nelson college Old Boys (from 2018)

Henry William and Joseph Young.

Special thanks also to the parents, parent helpers, and regatta managers, Sheryl Wilson and Rebecca

Inwood.

But ultimately it was down to the perseverance and commitment of every rower who gave it their all

and came away with fantastic results.

MAADI CUP - 25-31 March

Maadi is one of the largest high school events, with 120 schools and over 2,000 competitors, watched by

10,000 live spectators as well as coverage on Sky Sports.

A tight squad of 12 boys from Nelson College travelled to Lake Karapiro to take place in 8 events. There

were 27 races in all conditions - rain, wind and sun - over the 6 days. Heats, repechages, quarter finals,

semi finals, C Finals, A Finals, lots of exciting rowing. Lots of amazing results including two national titles,

two gold medals, one silver, one bronze and a cup.

Sam Lenton (stroke), Oliver Ransom, Matthew Baker, Tom Murray + Flynn Hennessy (cox) dominated

the heats and went on to win gold medals and the Boys U16 Coxed Quad title for 2019, also receiving

the Wellington College 150th cup. Sam Lenton and Oliver Ransom went on to win further gold in a

closely fought race for the Boys U16 Double title.

The novices who started rowing competitively this season were not to be outdone. Rico Fraser and

Matthew Baker had a good solid run to win a bronze medal in the Boys U18 Novice Double. Matt had

just rowed the quad to a gold, jumped straight into a boat to compete in this double.

250m and grab the Boys U18 Novice Quad silver medal from a strong field.

Sam Lenton has also been selected to trial for the South Island team in Twizel this weekend.

NZ NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 22 Feb

The NZ National Championships are a club event that two current Nelson Boys competed in, winning the

NZ Mens Quad.

Connor Johnston, Chad Ricketts, Dylan Crick (Nelson Old Boy 2108) and Will Johnston (Marlborough)

I think Tom Murray has best summed up what rowing is in part of his Club Captain's Speech

“If you know any rowers, you're bound to know that we love to continuously complain about waking up

at 4.30 in the morning and slugging our way down to the Rowing club in the cold and dark, to row out on

the harbour. For 7 months the rowers had to keep up this routine of up to 12 x 2-hour trainings a week

in order to be in a contending position for medals come Maadi time. For some of us, this is the last year

of rowing under the schools' name, and for others it's their first taste of the addiction.”

Cricket

The Cricket season has now finished with the willow and leather put away for another season.

Congratulations to all our Nelson College Cricket teams and players for their season. There were some

outstanding performances for the season, far too many to name them all. I would like to thank all of

those who put in the time and effort to coach, manage and volunteer their time to assist with making

cricket at Nelson College exist.

The 1st XI had a positive season overall given the overhaul in players. They came 2nd at Quad and beat

Christchurch Boys High 2nd XI which is the first time a Nelson College Cricket team has beaten a CBHS

team. They beat Marlborough Boys College in the annual fixture by 10 wickets and almost 200 runs, but

lost to them in the D’Arcy Cup.

Without naming all the outstanding performances, for the 1st XI Jarrod McKay took 7/10 v Wakatu and

6/35 v WTTU, Kaleb McKay took 5/8 v MBC and Ronan Restieaux took 5/37 v CBHS.

The 2nd XI had the services of Garry MacDonald as coach this year who saw this team grow into some

excellent young cricketers. Again despite the overhaul in players with many from previous years teams

stepping up to the 1st XI. The new breed came in and acquitted themselves well and were close to

playing in the semi-finals, and may have done so had it not have been for the weather intervening.

The 3rd XI made the 3rd grade semi-finals but unfortunately were beaten by the Garin 1st XI.

We had three teams in 2019 play in the College Grade with some close finishes and good cricket played

by all.

In 2018 the Year 9 A side made it to the semi-finals of the Junior Secondary School Cup competition and

in 2019 the Junior A side played and beat St Bede’s in that semi-final. They then went on to play

Christchurch Boys High School in the final and again unfortunately came up short. But some great

performances by Luke Kilworth making 80 runs in the final.

The overall theme of the season seems to be so close, with the question of “What if?” ringing around

the heads of many in the Nelson College Cricket set up.

Page 24: Nelson College Newsletter Term 1 2019 · Nicholas Paulin, Tarn Richards, Logan Schokking, Logan Smith, Luc Wiegand, Luke Wilkes. ... assessment in the form of a research report. My

I would like to congratulate Finn Restieaux and Finn Raxworthy for making their debuts for the Nelson

Griffins, the Senior Men Rep side. They both performed well in their debuts with Raxworthy figures

being 0/28 off 8 and Restieaux making a second highest score of the team with 28.

Finn Restieaux was also selected in the Central Districts U17 team that came second at the U17 National

Tournament in Lincoln in January. The skills set he displayed at this tournament highlighted a bright

future in the game. Further to this Finn was also selected in a Willows XI (which is sort of a South Island

Secondary Schools team) to tour Malaysia and Sri Lanka. He leaves on April 11th and for around 2 weeks

will play some cricket that will be a massive challenge. Not only the level of competition will be high

playing local representative sides, but also the extreme heat and the pitch conditions. All in all a big

challenge and one I know Finn is up for. On behalf of everyone involved in the 1st XI and Nelson College

Cricket we wish Finn all the best.

Library News

Ebook Promotion: During the last four weeks of this term we have been promoting our eBook/Audio

book collection. Nelson College belongs to an eBook consortium. This gives us access to well over 2,000

eBooks/audio Books (and growing all the time). After downloading the app (called ePlatform by

Wheelers), students use their school email and password to log in and then download their book. Great

when they are travelling or need a book and the libraries are closed.

Author visit: In the last week of the term, we have been lucky to have had author/adventurer, Jon

Tucker, come and talk to two Prep classes and one year nine group. Jon, and his wife Barbara, have

spent most of their adult lives at sea, raising five boys in the process. Drawing on these experiences, Jon

has written five fiction books for 9–90 year olds set around the shores of New Zealand and Australia

(including the Marlborough Sounds). As well as weaving adventure and mystery into his plots, his

characters take on an eco-warrior role. Jon shared anecdotes from his travels as well as some writing

techniques with the students.

Old Boy Obituary

Scientist and delegate of the European Space Agency Harry Atkinson (Old Boy 1942-47) passed away at

the end of 2018. At Nelson College Harry was encouraged into science by Thomas Hill Easterfield

(foundation professor of chemistry and physics at Victoria University of Wellington, and initial director

of the Cawthron Institute). Throughout Harry's career he was based in the UK and held several notable

positions, including UK delegate of the European Space Agency, and in 2006 had an asteroid named
