• He landed on the moon July 20, 1969, but was part of the Gemini space program before this. On March 16, 1966, he first went into space as the pilot on the Gemini 8 mission.

Famous Accomplishments

• Neil Armstrong, was a combat fighter pilot, test pilot, astronaut, university professor and member of two Presidential Commissions on Space Flight Accidents. As an astronaut he was Command Pilot of Gemini 8 and Commander of Apollo 11.

As Commander of Apollo 11, at 2:56 UTC on July 21, 1969, Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the Moon. Armstrong's statement upon doing so; "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." is one of the best known quotations in the world.

Among other honors, he is a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. The crater in which he landed on the moon is named after him.
