I live in Markham, which is on a mountain. The two largest roads of Markham are Bryn Road and Abernant Road, Bryn Road having 93 houses and Abernant Road having 88 houses. I live in 52 Abernant Road, which is in the heart of the village. As shown on the map, there are two parts of Bryn Road which both finish at dead ends. On the map, the east of Abernant Road leads to Penylan Road, into Argoed. The west area leads to two places, Tredegar and Blackwood. At the bottom left of the map, there are three roads exiting Markham; when facing south-west, the road to the left leads to Cefn Forest, the road to the right leads to Bedwellty common, and the road straight on leads to Aberbargoed.

Work on the shafts at Markham was started in 1911. By 1912 the colliery was in full production but this coincided with a general strike. At that time the average wage of a miner employed in Welsh coalfield was 5 shillings. The effect of the strike was that in 1914 minimum wage laws were introduced. Markham Colliery ceased production and was closed in 1986. Now, there is nothing left of the colliery, there is grass where it used to be.
