PPrrooggrreessssiivvee DDiinnnneerr –– TThhaannkkss ssoo MMuucchh!! Thank you to everyone who participated in the Spring Progressive Dinner on March 30! The cocktail hour, held at Phyllis Clark’s lovely home, was a great start to the evening. Guests were greeted at the door with a lei and an “Aloha!” greeting, then mingled and mixed with friends both old and new. The beautiful weather was perfect for enjoying the evening outdoors on the terrace.

As the evening progressed, we split up into small groups for our Hawaiian-themed dinner. Special thanks go to our wonderful hosts for the night - Judith Krall, Linda and Jim Phillips, Lydia and John

Boesch, Cathy and John Slocum, Kaye and Chuck Marrale, Jeane and Jim Kays, and Pat and Jack MacMillan. Their hospitality truly made this evening possible.

Last but not least, thank you to all of our members who signed up tried a new dish and met a new neighbor. As Jeane Kays recalled from her Girl Scout days; “Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold.” Perfectly said!

Mexican Train is a game played with number dominoes. The object of the game is for a player to play all the dominoes from his or her hand onto one or more chains, or "trains", emanating from a central hub or "station". The game's most popular name comes from a special optional train that belongs to all players. If you are interested in joining this group please contact Connie Heishman at

[email protected] and let her know what days and times work best for you.

Bridge News

Ladies Marathon Bridge – May

Attention All Bridge Players!!! We have new members, some of whom are bridge players of all levels. There are about 75 players, men and women, currently playing bridge in NOP groups and

marathons. I know there are bridge players out there who are not yet in a group or marathon. I know there are couples groups who play that are not currently supported by NOP. Send me your membership list to see if you qualify for support. I’d even be interested in starting a Men’s Marathon . . . Act 2 has

one and so does Pinehurst Country Club. Bridge Luncheon signups went very well for this annual duplicate event. There are 24 teams playing on

the April 29th event at Pinewild Country Club from 9:45 to 3:00. Chef Todd has promised us a delightful lunch of steak salad, roll, dessert , and beverages. Hopefully, the cards with be kind. Watch for pictures and results next month.

Grandslammers – Grandslammer LXIV finally got started this month. We currently have five teams signed up for a new Chicago marathon. So, those of you who are finishing up may want to sign up now.

What about some of you new members? As soon as we have eight teams ready to play, we will begin the next marathon. New members are always welcome.

The marathons are grouped by the player’s preference – Chicago or Rubber bridge scoring. As soon as eight teams, in either group, are signed up, play will begin. Karen Fogle is trying to organize a group that will play another Rubber Bridge marathon. If you like to join please let Karen and I know. We will start it

as soon as we have 8 teams that want to play rubber bridge. This is a continuous process. So, sign up now by calling Phyllis Clark at 215-8730 or emailing her at [email protected]. Send your check/s for $10/lady made payable to Neighbors of Pinehurst to Phyllis

Clark, 64 Stoneykirk Drive, Pinehurst, NC 28374. The documents are sent out in PDF format and can be read and printed from Adobe Reader, just like the newsletter. For those who do not have the email option, we will continue to use snail mail.

Hostesses, please remember to schedule your games as early as possible giving your opponents several options. Everyone has busy schedules, so set up your game at least a month in advance. Thank you.

Need a Partner? Give Phyllis a call at 215-8730 or email her at [email protected]. She will try to hook you up with other players who are looking for a partner. Have you considered playing in another

marathon with a different partner? Maybe a new member? Another friend? Or, someone who’s looking for a partner?

Couples Marathon

Couples Marathon EE has finished with these prize winners:

1. Dave Jenkins & Norma Yauger 18,580 ($45) 2. Kathy & Marty Samchalk 17,960 ($35)

3. Karen & Denny Fogle 17,590 ($25) 4. Rosemary & Harry Fekkes 16,970 ($15)

Congratulations to all!

Couples Marathon, continued

Sign up now if you are interested in playing in the next couples’ marathon. Signups will continue until

there are eight couples and another marathon will begin. Sign up and join in the fun! It’s a very nice way to spend an evening. Here’s wishing you great cards!

Games are scheduled so that you play with a different couple once a month for seven (7) months. If you enjoy bridge, this is a great way to meet new couples as well as spend an evening with friends. To sign up, send a check for $15/couple, made payable to Neighbors of Pinehurst, to Lynne Moore, 32

Lasswade Drive, Pinehurst, NC, 28374. Checks may be mailed or dropped in the basket on Lynne’s porch. If there are any questions, call Lynne at 235-3929 or email her at [email protected].

How Marathon Bridge Works – Each Marathon consists of seven months of scheduled play with one additional month allowed for the completion of all rounds. There are no games scheduled in December. Couples or lady partners may schedule play at their convenience during the eight-month period. Signups are on a first-come-first-served basis. When a group fills up, new signups are placed on a waiting list until

there are eight teams to form a new group. This procedure continues throughout the year. So, if you are finishing one marathon and wish to continue or sign up for an additional one send in your check (s). For more information contact either Lynne or Phyllis.

Bridge News, continued Neighbors Bridge Groups – Neighbors supports various bridge groups by providing cards, score sheets,

etc. The requirements for being a “Neighbors” group are simple: 1) All the members must be current members of Neighbors of Pinehurst. 2) You must use the ladies on the substitute list above as substitutes, whenever possible. To my knowledge there are four duplicate groups that currently qualify for NOP support.

There is the 1st Monday Group headed by Judith Kelley, the 1st Friday Group (Bridge Babes) headed by Phyllis Clark, and the 3rd Monday Group which Phyllis also heads up. There is another 3rd Monday Game, which plays at Elliott’s restaurant. There is a 4-table duplicate group, which plays 28 boards. This group is headed by

Kathy Samchalk and Joanne Hodges. They start at 9:45 and break for lunch. If there are any other NOP groups out there please send Phyllis your membership list to see if you qualify. NOP supports groups with cards, travelers, and recapitulation pads.
