“I’mproudthatMaryland’s8thDistrictishometothenewJosiahHensonMuseumandPark,”saidCongressmanJamieRaskin.“ThisvividretellingoftheextraordinarylifeandlegacyofJosiahHensonwillhelpusbringtolifeAfrican-AmericanhistoryinMontgomeryCountyandacrossMaryland.IthankMontgomeryParksandMontgomeryCountyforresearchingandupliftingtheuntoldstoriesofourAfrican-Americancommunity,andIlookforwardtovisitingandpromotingthemuseum.”

Josiah Henson’s Life and Legacy

JosiahHensonwasbornintoslaveryinCharlesCounty,MarylandonJune15,1789.Afterbeingsoldseparatelyfromhismotherandsiblingsattheauctionblock,hewaseventuallytradedtoIsaacRileyandworkedalongsidehismotherontheRileyplantationfrom1795–1830.TheplantationwaslocatedalongwhatisnowOldGeorgetownRoadinNorthBethesda.Throughhardworkandacumen,Hensonrosetobecometheplantationsuperintendent.HealsofoundChristianityafterattendingasermongivenbyanitinerantpreacheratthenearbyNewportMill.

HensonbecameanordainedMethodistministerandaftersufferingtheviolenceandcrueltyoffourdecadesofchattelslavery,escapedtoCanadaonfootin1830withhiswifeandfourchildren.TherehehelpedestablishedDawnSettlement,acommunityinhabitedbythoseformerlyenslavedintheUnitedStates,continuedhisworkintheMethodistministryandbecameaninternationalspeakerandabolitionist.Hensoncontinuedthefightforfreedom,leading118peoplefromenslavementintheUnitedStatestofreedominCanadaasaconductorontheUndergroundRailroad.

In1849,Hensonpublishedhisautobiography,TheLifeofJosiahHenson,FormerlyaSlave,NowanInhabitantofCanada,whichvividlydepictedhisexperienceofenslavedlifeinMarylandandKentucky.ThebookinspiredHarrietBeecherStowe’sgroundbreakingfictionalnovel,UncleTom’sCabin,whichbrokeallsalesrecordsofthetimeandsoldmorethanhalfamillioncopiesby1857.UncleTom’sCabininspiredtheabolitionistmovementinthemid-nineteenthcentury,andmanybelievethenovelhelpedpropelthecountryintocivilwar.Henson’slaterworkasarenownedspeakerandauthorgarneredhiminvitationsbothtotheWhiteHouseandWindsorCastleinLondon,England.
