SLIP Interns at Mercy

The St. Louis Internship Program (SLIP) is a year round internship program through St. Louis Public Schools designed to help youth with a once in a lifetime opportunity. Students go through an intensive training in preparation for the work environment. Those who successfully complete the program get placed in a paid summer internship.

Mercy became a work site this year for the first time and had four interns placed throughout various departments. “SLIP provides hope and opportunity for high school students…through partnerships with area businesses and community organizations. It develops motivated, well-trained and talented future employees in the St. Louis community.”

Dyamond Bradford recently graduated from Soldan International High School and was placed at Mercy Neighborhood Ministry. She did extensive editing of resource lists that assist those in need and are housed on our website,

www.mercy.net/mnm. Dyamond will be heading to Tennessee State University this semester to major in Chemistry and Forensic Science with hopes of becoming an anesthesiologist.

Serving Hands of Mercy

Dinner guests at the St. Vincent’s Parish meal program were served by a number of Mercy Administrators on June 26 , 2017. Several Senior Vice-Presidents (SVP), Executive Presidents, and the CEO President of Mercy humbly served food and drink to those who were hungry. The team was joined by Traci Carter and Cheryl Schorr of Mercy Neighborhood Ministry.

Cheryl commented that, “Mercy volunteers on a regular basis to serve the meal at St. Vincent’s. The coworkers often leave fuller than the guests…of gladness, that is!”

St. Charles Community Council Honors Mercy

The Community Council of St. Charles recently honored Mercy for its work in the Tri-County area and, in June, presented them with the Community Builder Award. The award is given to individuals and/or organizations who work together with community partners to meet community needs and create solutions that improve the lives of fragile individuals and families.

"It's an honor to be recognized for work we do that truly supports the Mercy mission," said Don Kalicak, vice president of business development and planning for Mercy's eastern Missouri region. "As we’ve expanded into the St. Charles area and beyond, we’ve been welcomed and want to return that by supporting other organizations that are doing great things in the community.”

Crisis Nursery Expands

Saint Louis Crisis Nursery has opened an outreach center inside Mercy Hospital Jefferson to provide families with crisis counseling, community referrals, home visitation and parent education groups. “We are thrilled to bring our Family Empowerment Program to Jefferson County,“ said Crisis Nursery CEO, DiAnne Mueller. “We will use our longstanding model of child abuse prevention that has been working in the St. Louis Metro area for over 31 years. Together we will save babies lives, keep kids safe and build strong families.”

Jessica Buechting will be the Nursery’s family empowerment social worker based at the outreach center. She is a Licensed Master Social Worker experienced with families as a foster care case manager and permanency specialist in Jefferson County.

Eclipse Countdown

NASA experts are encouraging everyone to experience “one of nature’s grandest spectacles” on August 21 – a TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN!! In Missouri, it will take place around midday when daytime will turn to night.

To fully enjoy it, we must take precautions during this event. DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY UP AT THE SUN! Go get you and your family some “eclipse glasses”.

NASA reports that “looking directly at the sun is unsafe except during the brief total phase of a solar eclipse (“totality”), when the moon entirely blocks the sun’s bright face, which will happen only within the narrow path of totality.

“Regular sunglasses are not safe nor are unfiltered cameras, telescopes, binoculars or other optical devices. The concentrated solar rays will damage the filter and enter your eye(s), causing serious injury.” https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/

Some local libraries and county parks will have glasses available at no charge or for a small fee. Some stores are selling them with accompanying educational/informational books. NASA stresses that glasses should be from an approved manufacturer, such as American paper Optics, Rainbow Symphony or Thousands Oaks Optical and have an ISO icon with reference 12312-2.

Tour Neighborhood Health Centers – St. Louis

Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) play an important role in our community by providing health care to all persons, regardless of their health insurance status. During National Health Center Week, Aug 14-19, 2017, St. Louis’ community health centers are opening their doors to those who want to learn more. “This is an opportunity to network with health center leadership, understand the importance of our region’s community health centers, the benefits to the surrounding neighborhood and the need for this community resource.”

While this information may be beneficial for paying your personal bills, it’s also a heads-up for those numerous agencies that provide utility assistance to those in need in our communities.

Laclede Gas has been serving Missouri for 160 years.

Volunteer Fair – Union

Are you considering volunteering in your community? Is your non-profit or government agency looking for volunteers? Come to the Volunteer Fair at East Central College (ECC), September 13.

Franklin County Service Providers is partnering with ECC to present a Volunteer Fair that is open to the community. It is free to attend and both short and long term volunteer opportunities may be available.

Volunteering can be very rewarding by increasing your knowledge, meeting interesting people and making a difference in your

community.

Suicide Awareness & Prevention Conference – Festus
