Board of Governors General Information President’s Letter

Dear Fellow Members,

Thank you to each of you who attended the presentation of the ”Centennial Program” October 5th. We must upgrade our facility, improve our function revenues and increase our membership.

Please join me November 20th, for a cocktail party from 6:30 to 7:30, cash bar, to welcome members of the Milton Hoosic Club, who are eligible to dine with us, starting November 1st. Hoosic President Gene Ferris and I, hope for a continuing close relationship with each other’s clubs creating a positive association for each organization.

Make sure you check the entertainment schedule and reserve early for the wonderful events our entertainment committee has planned for the coming holiday season. Your participation is important.

Remember our “Night of Thanks” November 9th, honoring our veterans. Last year we entertained over 200 guests, so don’t be left out and bring your checkbook. All funds raised will be donated to the Francis House for wounded veteran’s families.

I would like to request that each of us to try to bring one new member into the Club. Our membership count is important to our operational revenue and ultimately to our ability to maintain our prices and membership costs. Lunch and dinner at the Neighborhood Club is one of the best dining deals in the area. Help your friends and family members make the decision to join.

A tree has been planted in the island at the entrance to the parking lot, sponsored by the Rotary and our Club to remember Tricia, our recently passed staff member. It is a wonderful reminder of her vibrant personality and her long service.

Message from The General Manager

To all of our Members,

November has just begun, and the Club is already in full swing with planning weddings and Holiday events. This is always an exciting and busy time at the Club. Members wishing to hold a Holiday event should contact the office quickly, as our rooms are booking up rapidly.

Joel has created a special lounge menu for members wishing to stop in after work for cocktails and appetizers with friends. We encourage members to use the lounge for cocktails. Members are always welcome in the lounge for cocktails. There is no obligation to stay for dinner.

I would also like to remind our members about the Night of Thanks & Giving to be held on Friday, November 9th. Please come and honor our Veterans. Information on the evening is included in the newsletter. We would appreciate any donations and raffle items for the event. If you would like to donate, please call the office. Members who wish to attend the event should make reservations early as this event will sell out. Because of the nature of the event, no late reservations can be accepted due to space limitations.

DAY TIME BOWLINGMorning bowling is scheduled for every Thursday morning except for the Movie Night days. Come a little early for coffee and bowl until lunch. Drop-ins are welcome any time, but please call for reservations if you are staying for lunch. For more info call Maureen Berggren 617-773-4080.

MIXED EVENING BOWLINGThe Bowling Season is well underway. Both the bowlers and the alleys are faring well. Lorraine Coakley and Susan Egan have set the pace for the women with scores of 104 and 100. Jim Egan and Wally Peters lead the pack with scores of 101 and 99. Teams 3 and 6 are tied for the lead. As the leaves turn color and flutter, the bowlers aim to stay out of the gutter.

REMINDER TO ALL BOWLERSPROPER DRESS IS STILL REQUIRED FOR DINING AFTER BOWLING. Jeans, bowling shoes or sneakers are never allowed. Take a quick moment to change before you come upstairs. Thank you for adhering to our dress code.

Monday, November 26th Get Ready for the Holidays! Decorating the Club for the Holidays has always been a fun experience for the entertainment committee along with volunteers from membership

and staff. We will be getting started on the Monday following Thanksgiving. Please give the club a call if you would like to join us for a day of fun, creative ideas and a feeling of satisfaction when you see the final results. AND - Plenty of pizza for lunch!!

Mystery Movie NightThe Dark was full of laughter, music, romance and,

yes, the audience came out singing “Drink! Drink! Drink!” but still, none of us sounded like Mario Lanza, “The Student Prince”.

The food Joel served was truly in keeping with the theme of the movie.

You can enjoy another evening in the Dark by joining us at our November “Mystery Movie Night”,

when we will present_____________________starring_________________.

You really didn’t think we were going to tell you the name of the movie, but a clue is: Bridges, Japan, Pride and a great experience to share with friends.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS TO THE MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Q. How do I sponsor my friends for membership?A.We are pleased that you wish to sponsor your friends so that they may also experience the benefits of membership in the Neighborhood Club. Those who have been members in good standing for at least one year are eligible to sponsor new members. Applications for prospective members may be obtained in the Management Office or may be mailed directly to the applicant or sponsor. An inviting letter and instructions for filling out the application are included. The completed applications and letters of recommendation from each of two sponsors (not of the same family) are then to be returned to the Management Office. Applications are reviewed by the Membership Committee for completeness. Names of applicants and their sponsors are posted (near Members’ entrance) for a minimum of one week. The names of applicants are then presented to the Board of Governors for a vote of approval. We look forward to welcoming your friends.

Q. Are applicants required to be residents of Quincy?A. No. There is no residency requirement for membership. Members reside in other communities throughout the area and beyond. “Quincy Neighborhood” indicates where our premier Club building is located.

Q. Will there be a “no initiation fee month” membership drive this fall?A. There will not be a free initiation month this fall. However, there are exciting new membership opportunities associated with the Club’s centennial program.

RSVP by November 2The Neighborhood Club of Quincy is again hosting the annual “Night of Thanks and Giving”. This year it will be held on November 9th. The evening is a tribute to all veterans past and present that have served our Country. If you haven’t attended in the past, please come. It is wonderful event for a great cause.

The evening includes dinner, and an auction. There will be a silent auction, raffles, and several “live” auctions…a little something for everyone. We are asking for your donations of items for the auction. Any items, gift certificates, tickets to sporting events, merchandise, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Each year the proceeds of the event are donated to a Veteran’s organization. This year all proceeds will be donated to the Fisher House Boston. Fisher House is a national organization that donates “comfort homes,” built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful time. There is at least one Fisher House at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. The Fisher House program

serves more than 10,000 families each year. There is no charge for any family to stay at a Fisher House. Fisher House Boston is the 46th Fisher House in the Fisher House Foundation and is located in West Roxbury, MA. www.FisherHouse.org.

Please join us this year for our annual Christmas Dinner Social. This is a wonderful occasion to get together with your friends and family to celebrate the coming of the Holiday Season.

It is an evening that you will all want to experience. The Club is decorated beautifully with the help

STAFF CHRISTMAS GIFTSIt has been the Club’s policy to give the staff a

Christmas gift from the members for all of their hard work and dedication.

This year, members will be billed in November for these gifts in the amount of $13 per

B member and $25 per A member.

If this gift presents a hardship for any members please let the office know. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the Club.

BOOK CLUB IOur book club choice discussed at our October meeting was Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. What a suspenseful read, darkly chilling right to the end. Thanks, Maryellen. This month we are reading The Light Between Oceans by M.L Stedman taking us back to the early 20th Century.

BOOK CLUB IIOctober Book Club met on the 16th at the Club beginning with a gracious lunch. Rachael Bartley lead the discussion Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, for this exciting and fast moving book. The next meeting will be on November 27th, change due the Thanksgiving holiday and December will remain on schedule on December 18. November’s book will be The Language of Flowers by Vanessa s Diffenbaugh. The Washington Post calls this an original and brilliant first novel. “Diffenbaugh has united her fascination with the language of flowers—a long-forgotten and mysterious way of communication—with her firsthand knowledge of the travails of the foster-care system…This novel is both enchanting and cruel, full of beauty and anger. Diffenbaugh is a talented writer and a mesmerizing storyteller.”December’s book is Sandcastle Girls, by Chris Bohjalian, a book of fiction based on history. “Bohjalian deftly weaves the many threads of this story back and forth from past to present, from abuse to humanity, from devastation to redemption. His ability to add irony and wit makes the contrasting horrors even more intense. . . . Staggering and utterly riveting . . .A valuable and powerful piece of evidence pointing to the undeniable.” states The Washington Post.Optional reading suggested by Ardis Porter was The President’s Club by Nancy Jibbs and Michael Duffy or The Immortal Life of Harriett Lacks, by Rebecca Sklout.

2012-2013 Sharing Agreement with the Milton Hoosic Club which will allow access

to each other’s Club’s amenities.Hoosic members will be able to dine at the Neighborhood Club effective

November 1, 2012 until the 2013 spring opening of the Hoosic restaurant.

Neighborhood Club members will be able to golf eight times per year at the Hoosic Club.

Complete rules and regulations will be posted on each Club’s bulletin

Improvements Around the Neighborhood Club of Quincy

Next time you ride in front of the Club, be sure to take notice of the new American Flag supplied by Marty and the brand new Club sign which as made possible by the generosity

of members, Sandy and Jeff Kunz, Claire and Michael McNally and Phyllis Godwin. These will now be highlighted, along with the front of the building, by the talents and generosity

of member, Fran White, who was kind enough to provide the lighting for both flag and sign, along with new lights for the front of the building. Many thank to these members.

The family of our beloved waitress, Trisha, wishes to thank everyone for their expressions of sympathy on her untimely death. Anyone wishing to donate to her children’s fund, please send your gift to:

Historical and Neighborhood Club of QuincyOrnaments

For the past few years, the Neighborhood Club of Quincy has offered Christmas ornaments with hand painted depictions of the Club as well as Quincy and Milton historic sites.

Deanna Seymourian organized this project with the understanding that the profit from sales will go to the Centennial Committee. This year we commissioned additional Neighborhood Club

ornaments as well as famous H.H. Richardson designed Thomas Crane Library, the Adams Mansion, the Birthplaces of John and John Quincy Adams, and the Baker Chocolate Factory.

If you have an interest in purchasing one or more of these ornaments please fill in the form below and send it to the Club. The cost of each ornament is just $20.00. This year we are also

offering a special afghan highlighting historic locations around the city of Quincy or Braintree.
