Looking forward to next year, the recent City announcement of “Focus 52” - a fund to help generate up to $180 million for neighborhood development projects across the City, could not have come at a better time. This fund will help provide the incentive for us to continue our strategic planning efforts to help revitalize our neighborhood business district, which is our top priority. While Plan Cincinnati (recently adopted by City Council) will help provide the road map, neighborhood initiatives of surveys and urban design planning sessions will provide an exciting opportunity for you to participate in the process. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

DECEMBER 2012

JANUARY 2013

The holiday season is a wonderful time for reflection and anticipation. This past year has been truly amazing! An unprecedented number of neighborhood residents have stepped up to volunteer, putting to work their remarkable talents and dedication on numerous initiatives.

One of these volunteers, Beth Ewing, has just accepted the position of 1st Vice President. Beth has been instrumental in beautification efforts and serves on the Finance Committee. We welcome her to our Executive Team. We thank Diane Noyes for her service in this position for the past year and half. Diane resigned due to new work commitments.

Our son, Dr. Chris Lewis, leads a non-profit organization, Village Life, which travels to Tanzania twice yearly to provide services to three villages who otherwise have no access to medical care. He has expanded the organization from providing medical care to include education, water safety, and other needs. The team is composed completely of volunteers from the Cincinnati community and the UC community including the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Education, Engineering, DAAP, Business, and others. The first medical clinic for the area was completed last year through the design efforts of DAAP students and teaching construction techniques to the villagers by the UC chapter of Engineers Without Borders. These teams are currently building a school there. Come to artwalk at Essex Studios on December 7 and 8, 6 to 11pm. The artists donate portions of their sales to VLOP to further their work in Tanzania. It's a fun event, and Sonny and I always find unique items for our home and for gift giving. the school to visit their grandchild’s classroom and participate in Montessori lessons. Students show them the Montessori materials and other work they have completed in class. The program also included an art’s sampler of student performances in vocal music, Suzuki Flute, Orff, and the worldly renown, “Ropin’ Rockets.” “Our grandparents are very supportive of our program,” said Principal Lewis. “We enjoy having them come to our school and visit their grandchild’s class. They are very special people and we are honored to have them attend our school on their special day.” “This is my third year of attending Grandparent’s Day and I love it! I really enjoy visiting the classroom and watching my grandchildren learn,” said Ms. Highsmith. Traditionally, Grandparent’s Day is hosted on the final day of classes prior to the Thanksgiving vacation. For the past three years the event has experienced a steady growth in attendance. “Our parking lot is completely full and we usually have standing room only for this occasion. This day is so awesome because of the interaction with all members of our school community and it definitely puts you in the holiday spirit. Our PTO does an outstanding job assisting with the organization of this event and we are already and we are already planning for next year’s Grandparent’s Day.” said Lewis. NAM Students Show Their Spirit! Students at NAM raised over $975 for the “Pennies for Patients” cancer drive. Students across all age levels brought in pennies and made donations to this worthy cause. Ms. Heidi Davenport’s 3 or 6 age level raised the most money and received a pizza party for their efforts. With our friends on the east coast being hammered by Hurricane Sandy and winter weather like conditions, the NAM student council has organized a hurricane relief fund-raiser for the school to assist the victims of Hurricane Sandy. “Student council has set a goal of $500 to raise for the unfortunate people that have experienced horrific weather the past few,” said Shockley, Student Council advisor. The age levels 3 to 6, 9 to 12 are bringing in their nickels and other coins to contribute to the relief. The fund raiser will end December 18th “I am very proud of our students for the contributions they are making to assist mankind during difficult times. This is a major part of the Montessori experience our students receive at NAM,” said Principal Lewis. On behalf of the “Team NAM,” we wish all the citizens of North Avondale a blessed, prosperous and safe holiday season!

and tutoring spaces, and other after-school instruction and enrichment programs. As with our current facilities, these new spaces will also be available for the community to use for neighborhood meetings and gatherings.

The Deep Roots, Strong Branches Capital Campaign is a multi-phased project that will transform, not only the Enrichment Center, but will include improvements to the Mansion and Annex as well. This past summer, all internal lighting was upgraded; it improved the feel of all instructional spaces and provided greater energy efficiency. From our beginnings in 1970, The New School Montessori has had strong roots in North Avondale, and with the support of our extended community, we continue to make improvements that keep us ever-new and forever strengthening our authentic Montessori program and the community that surrounds. We invite you to join with us in our vision where children, staff and the community can learn, work, play and grow together. To follow our progress and to see photos and videos, go to www.thenewschool.cc and click on the capital campaign page.

Ann Baumgardner Development/Marketing Director

The New School Montessori invites you and your family to visit our open house on Sunday, January 27 between 2:00-4:00PM. Children are encouraged to explore the Montessori materials in the classroom and to tour the building with you. Teachers, staff and board members will be on hand to answer questions and share what a New School Montessori education has meant to them and to their families. We hope you’ll stop by and join us.
