Leadership to Improve Businesses
Leadership is a critical component of creating a highly efficient, profitable and motivated business
environment.
Many leaders are highly educated in their industries and have a superior work ethic to possibly produce
high level results.
The key is taking the time to orchestrate a business environment to perform in a highly efficient manner
with motivated associates. This breaks down to (2) two simple entities “people and processes”.
Most businesses in our world, when an issue occurs, place an abundance of people and/or processes on
the problem creating a “crisis management” scenario.
The main goal is an analysis of the “root cause” of the issue. Proper restructuring of the
processes/procedures to ensure there is “accountability” and defined responsibility for any future issues
are required.
A highly prolific leader will first engage all the associates on a consistent basis with a positive,
professional, and supportive demeanor and most importantly respect and care for all team members.
A consistent engaging verbiage with open-ended inquiries to learn about the associates as well as their
responsibilities is very important.
It is also important for a leader to learn every task of his subordinates while actually performing their
duties for a short period of time. This will better acclimate their understanding of the processes and
procedures while gaining the respect from their subordinates.
Many managers and supervisors are promoted to positions either by seniority or attrition, so a “job
suitability” analysis is important.
A detailed review of each subordinate’s job responsibilities is needed to ensure the associate has the
“tools” as well as total understanding of his or her responsibilities and signoff on said documents.
A complete review is then performed on all processes and procedures to ensure that there is firm
accountability of all sequential tasks in the business process.
Leaders will then share the main company goals and performance metrics/expectations of all associates
in a positive & professional open forum.
It is very important these goals and expectations of both overall company and associates have been
carefully measured to ensure they are fair and can be attained by all associates.
The consistent communication of these” metrics and measures” of qualitative & quantitative nature will
produce a progressive level of improvement in the business.
It is important that all positive progress be shared in open forums in weekly or bi-monthly meetings.
The information can also be shared by posting bar graphs / documents/Information in a general area
(cafeteria/conference room - bulletin board) as well as sharing positive emails with subordinates (green
italics and positive words).
All deficiencies and issues are to be shared with subordinates in private “coaching” sessions and
documented for progressive accountability and corrective action.
The final piece of the puzzle is maximizing motivational levels of all associates which have already been
increased by above leader methodology.
The implementation of an “Employee of The Month” Program might recognize associates monthly with
either a monetary reward , a day off with pay or possibly their own parking space by employee door with
sign “ Employee of The Month”.
It is also highly recommended to create an “employee of the month” panel of already awarded
associates to vote and award future associates to secure integrity of the award.
A “Wall of Fame” can also be created to post each employee of the month in full view of associates
(main hallway – entrance area).
The author has proven success for past 30 years consistently utilizing the above methodologies and
strategies to produce consistent progressive improvements in efficiencies, profitability and morale of
various business operations.
