Marco from Negazione was interviewed

in November, in Los Angeles by Al.

Al: So what part of Italy is Negazionefrom?Marco: We're from Torino, that's in theNorthern part of Italy, close to France.I don't know if we will be living there

for much longer because we areplanning to move to Amsterdam. It'shard for us to be in a band, and tosurvive in Italy, especially in Torino. Each time we come back from a tourwe have to set up our situation withjobs again, and it's kinda hard.Amsterdam is the only place we've beento while touring all over Europe thatwe really like, we have a lot of goodfriends there. So we think it could bea good situation for us .

Marco: Yeah, I hope we don't have somany problems when we get here! And

that's only one point.AI : What is going on with the Europeanscene right now?Marco: It 's changing a lot in the lastyears . Two years ago there was a reallystrong scene in Italy, and that wasbecause there were a lot of places to

play, and good exchange between otherscenes. It got worse because of policeand lack of new people involvement. But at the same time there was a reallystrong scene in Holland, there hasalways been a really good scene there, but in the last couple of years therewas this new place Emma, which wasa big squat . A lot of bands got to playthere and it developed a good scene.

then the band is like God on stage. Ilike a lot of American bands, and I stilllike them, even though I didn't get toknow the people . On the other handCOC are on of my favorite bands andI met them and they were great guysso now it is something even better . Imet a lot of other bands I didn't knowabout who I like, Attitude Adjustmentfrom San Francisco for example.AI : Well does Negazione have thatmakes you special . How about lyrics. ..Marco : Well we've all written the lyricssince the be'innin . - we all want to

AI : How much have you been touring?Marco: In the last two years, most ofthat time was spent touring all overEurope, except for England andScandinavia where we will go in thenew year . We have been to all theEuropean scenes, and not just thehardcore scene more in general . It'svery interesting the communicationsyou can have with people!Al : When you got to say Germany, howdo you communicate with them, do youspeak German?Marco: No, all those people speakenglish, especially in Northern Europemost people speak english, so we hadto learn english. We just learned ontour! I think it is very important to talkwith the people, and if we're going toplay somewhere, sometimes it's moreimportant what's happening before andafter the show than on stage . Becauseon stage you don't have that possibilityto talk directly with the people - andthese things you can do before and afterthe show . Everybody in Negazione likesto do that, and not consider the bandand the audience as seperate.Al : When Raw Power were here someof them had a problem with notspeaking english .

It's kind of a balance that somewherethere will be a good scene so peopleand bands traveling can help that otherscene to have a good time, or to be agood scene . The big thing about thescene in Europe is the desire forcommunication between the people. And there is a big big interest in theAmerican scene . I hope it's not toomuch because hardcore can have thisnice beautiful side of just thinkingabout looks - I like a lot of bands fromthe US as well but they don't have totake that attitude of looking at thebands like they're God.AI : Now that you've been here inAmerica have you changed yourattitude towards American bands?Marco: Not that I've changed myattitude, it's always been a matter ofonly judging a band after I've got toknow them directly . That's my real way- I can agree with the lyrics or not butwhen I don't know the people it's harder. Here I find that there is much moreseparation between band and audience.AI : You've probably seen a lot biggershows . ..Marco: Yeah I mean some of the biggershows were just like normal rock androll shows. It's like the audience and

put our energies and o id as intoband, so we all write lyrics . And weare starting to sing in english now . Wedon' t have a particular message but theband to us is the best expression of ourfeelings and ideas, and we want thiscommunication . I mean even if I amnot in a band I would want to travelalot and to know a lot more and to seea lot more than I can see in my town. But a band is 10 times better you getto see a lot of places and meet a lotof people . You can learn so much andyou have something to give to them.I think it is a good exchange. We don'tpretend to just go into a place and playour music and people come and paymoney and that's all . We learn a lot andmake friends all over . I hope thishappends in the US too.Al : Now that your LP is out, do you seeany direction changes for your music?Marco : As always there is no particulardirection that we decide, it's just whatwe feel . A lot of people have differentideas about our band, but I can't seeany kind of label on our music - I don'twant that either - hardcore punk, speedmetal . . . It 's up to everyone tolisten to the record and like it or not.Musically I don't know what will be

-------------------next, but for sure it will be the samekind of attitude . You can play fast, you can play slow stuff, metal, funk, reggae but the attitude is the attitudeof hardcore.Al: Can you see a new attitude inEurope with the new popularity ofmetal bands?Marco: It's something that is comingup strong . I personally like a lot ofmetal stuff - but that's just the music.I like some of them, but for the restthe worst thing is that most of themetal bands have a really shit attitude.Really bad way of acting, really badbeliefs, and they don't have theindependant spirit of what was punksince the beginning . So I am afraid thatsome people are taking everything frommetal ; the complete attitude, musicand words and shit and evil and all thisstuff . But it's also the opposite, we cantake some of the music and keep ourattitude . Because most of the timeheavy metal is just a music and thereis nothing more than that . It seems thathere the big thing is looking for a majorrecord label, or not a major label buta little big so called independant label. The people think they can reach morepeople and make more money, but theyget ripped off every time . Sometimes

`it's sad because after all these yearsof punk, of ideas and attitudes thereare people going in that direction.--~---'Nr0/~OCJY./Y'

states. I saw too many. I have nothingagainst people with bald heads andBombers and Dr . Martins, but I have ta lot against people who arenationalistic, fascist and racist . Itseems to me that there are a lot ofskins into that here . Over here youseem to have these fashions like speedmetal, skinheads, punks, straight edgeand I don't know what else but in Europeits not better or worse but we don't putso much fashion into punk . And we havemore political things, that I think isprobably because of the tradition ofthe countries and of the history . Thepeople are involved in the scene formore and for a longer time . Here peopleseem to be involved for a couple ofyears and then they give up, and thereare new people but in EuroPe there arenot so many new people, but the peoplewho do get involved it is a deeper thingand they are comitted for years andyears. A small minority of people hereare doing everything ; fanzines, labels, bands, everything you know . I met allthese people everywhere that areinvolved in the scene and that wasgreat, but I went to the shows and itwas a different aspect of the scene -and most of the time I did not enjoymyself much .

END

Al: Yeah, it's too bad when hardcorebands have the rock or metal atitude, even down to the point where they willonly play one big show in LA and ignorethe clubs or smaller shows . ..Marco : When we get here I know in thebig towns we will have to play bigshows, but at the same time we wantto play the smaller shows. When youare touring you need a big show forexposure and money, but it is importantto get communication too. I don't wantto come to LA and just play at Fenders. If someone told me they wouldn't goto Fenders to see us because it is tooexpensive, I would not blame them -if I lived in LA I don't think I would goto Fenders that much . I was there twiceand I saw more than 1000 people thereand I felt like having nothing to do withthe most part of them. Like "What amI doing here?" except for the music ofthe bands . I'm not into going to showsto fight or to get drunk, and I don't goto look tough - that's shit . And therewere hundreds of people acting thatway . Normally the attitude of peopleis better when it is a small place, theresmore control over what happends anda good atnosphere.

One thing that surprised me wasthe big skinheads fashion or trend, itseems to be a big thing here in the
