NEGATIVE SPACE
In an artwork the negative space is defined by the edges of the positive space and the frame or
boarder. Without it we would have nothing.... or everything depending on how you look at it.
OK, so what is Positive Space?
• Positive is fairly easy to understand. Generally it is the space that is occupied by the subject of a work of art. Conversely, negative space is the space that is not your subject.
You have all seen one of these and are mostly perched upon one right now.

If negative space is nothing why is it important?
• For every positive shape, there is a negative space surrounding it. This is as important to the overall success of your composition as the main subject.
• Creates a more interesting composition.• Helps you to capture your subject more accurately.• It can make you famous.
Another way to see things.
It messes with your mind.
What is there that isn’t “there?”
Negative space is fun and essential to an interesting composition!
