According to archaeologists, the earliest clothinglikely consisted offur, leather, leaves, or grassthat were draped, wrapped, or tied around thebody.

Knowledge of such clothing remains inferential, since clothing materials deteriorate quicklycompared to stone, bone, and shell.

Archaeologists have identified very early sewingneedles ofbone and ivory from about 30,000 BC,found near Kostenki, Russia in 1988.

Dyed flax fibres that could have been used inclothing have been found in a prehistoric cave inthe Republic of Georgia that date back to 36,000B.C.

The primary purpose of clothing is functional, as aprotection from the elements. Clothes also enhancesafety during hazardous activities such as cooking, byproviding a barrier between the skin and theenvironment. Further, clothes provide a hygienicbarrier, keeping toxins away from the body and

    limiting the transmission ofgerms.

Clothing performs a range of social and culturalfunctions, such as individual, occupational and sexualdifferentiation, and social status. A uniform, for

example, may identify civil authority figures, such aspolice and military personnel, or it may identify team, group or political affiliations. In many societies, norms about clothing reflect standards ofmodesty, religion, gender, and social status.
