President’s MessageGary Kogowski, Entec Polymers

As we approach the end of the SPE calendar year with the ANTEC meeting, there will be a significant change in the SPE Automotive

Division and SPE Detroit Section personnel. Pat Levine, our “super” administrative associate, will be retiring at the end of my term in May. Pat has provided her services to every event hosted by the division and section over the past 13 years. We wish Pat the best of luck and congratulations on her retirement. We are planning a special event for Pat’s retirement. Please consult our web site for a date and location as we move closer to Pat’s retirement date.

Over the past three months Jeff Helms and I have led a committee to undertake the difficult task of finding a replacement for Pat. We interviewed many candidates for the position and our committee ultimately decided on Dawn Stephens as the most qualified person to replace Pat. Dawn was formally an executive administrative associate with Ticona. Dawn is currently training with Pat during conferences and committee meetings. Dawn’s office will be located at the American Chemistry Council office building, Troy, MI. Please feel free to stop by and say hello to Dawn. Thank you to our committee members involved in finding Pat’s replacement; Anthony Gasbarro, Bob Petrach, and Bill Windschief.

The SPE AutoEPCON conference is rapidly approaching. This is a must attend conference that highlights new advances in engineering thermoplastics for automotive applications. This year we are planning sixteen technical presentations, a high tech exhibit area, and even more OEM engineers to join in networking throughout the day. The conference will be located at the MSU Conference Center, Troy, MI. The date of the conference is Tuesday, April 26. If your company would like to sponsor the AutoEPCON conference please contact Dr. Gary Kogowski at [email protected] or (248) 797 7433.

This year the SPE national ANTEC conference will be held in Boston, MA on May 1-5. This is the premier conference for plastics. Please see our web site for additional information.

We are always seeking new volunteers for the section. If you are interested is assisting with the newsletter, our web site, educational programs, or conferences please contact any one of our board members listed on the back page of this newsletter.

College students majoring in an area of plastics, a science, or engineering curricula related to the plastics field should consider applying for the SPE Detroit Section educational scholarship at this time. The application, scholastic requirements, and additional information are located on our web site, www.spedetroit.com.

Detroit Section member total at the end of November was up to 731 since August (728). It’s a broken record, but we are still trailing Chicago that also has grown slightly to 773. SPE as a whole also is up, in August it was 14,387, at the end of November it was 14,663.

Overall, SPE membership is relatively static, showing a bit of growth but not enough for me to say it is statistically significant. As of the last report on February 28, the Detroit Section has 735 members second to Chicago with 754. Two years ago we were at 892 and #1 so like the entire region; we have some work to do.

I must say I was disappointed at the turnout (<20) for our great dinner meeting March 30 where John Chrisekos, Jr., President, Intellicosting, LLC. talked with us about Intellicosting’s “true cost” analysis techniques and how that enables them to help make material cost tradeoffs and carbon footprint assessments.

At our board meeting last night (4-4), we talked about the dinner meeting format and how it doesn’t seem to fit with member’s schedules as it did in the past.

Let us know what type of programs you would like to see and how you’d like to see them. (more techfasts, tours, webinars, etc.)

Also please remember, the board meetings are open to all, stop in and let us know your thoughts. If you can’t stay for the entire meeting, that’s ok, if you have something to say or a question to ask, we’ll rearrange the agenda to suit.

I really hope we see some unfamiliar faces May 9.

March 2011 SPE Technical Dinner at Sterling Inn, MI was attended by many SPE members, SPE

Detroit board members and various plastic industry representatives. Attendees enjoyed an hour of networking and a great dinner before presentation started at 7:00 PM. John Chrisekos Jr. President of Intellicosting, LLC presented “Material Cost Tradeoffs and Carbon Footprints”.

Intellicosting a Troy, Michigan company, was founded in 2006 to provide forensic activity based component cost analysis, benchmarking service and Independent third party “True Cost/Price” analysis to various Automotive and non-automotive customers. Consumer Product, Electronics, Energ, Health Care, Materials, Defense, Transportation, Financial Firms, Consulting Firms and Engineering firms are among many industries benefited from Intellicosting unique approach in understanding true product cost.

Engineers at Intellicosting disassemble parts to identify all subcomponents and how they are manufactured. Next, they provide material and manufacturing cost

required to make the final assembly based on part volume, material specification, process condition, country of manufacturing, labor rates, utility rates, taxes and burden.

Intellicosting analysis has been used to make internal investment decisions for new product development and R&D investigation as well as external client investment to clearly understand production piece cost and total material cost.

Intellicarbon is an engineering service of Intellicosting that determines Carbon Footprint/GreenHouse Gas (GHG) emissions inventory for various industries. IntelliCarbon is a true comprehensive Green House Gas analysis which companies use to support their strategic sustainability objectives. In adition, IntelliCarbon analysis provide Clients with different levels of Carbon assessment such as product level carbon footprint; facility carbon footprint; product life cycle analysis carbon footprint; post audit carbon reduction strategies and many other critical carbon footprint planning.

Email address update!

This issue of Trends and Topics is being printed and mailed.

If *** appears after your name for our SPE “First Class” mailings, there is no email address in your SPE profile, and you won’t be receiving our emailed News Brief.

This and all recent newsletters are on our SPE website www.SPEdetroit.com under “Newsletter” so you can read them there. Web editions are in full color and have active hyperlinks throughout. Our News Briefs are also on our website under “More information” along with scholarship and essay information.

The SPE International Website, www.4SPE.org, has a complete calendar of worldwide seminars, conferences, and meetings plus a search engine for anything on the site. It has a great section for “Members Only” but now requires your email address as your User ID to be entered for access.

Email addresses are an important identifier for many purposes. In fact, many people have more than one email address – one at work and maybe several at home. It is extremely important that a correct email address is included in your SPE membership profile so that you can be sent essential emails from SPE. Also, your postal mailing address should be kept up-to-date. Home addresses are preferred to assure delivery.

If you don’t have an email address or don’t want to submit an email address that you do have, Tom Conklin, Director of Marketing and Sales for SPE, says, “Members without email addresses should go to Google or Yahoo and create a free email account. They should then email us at [email protected] and request that we add the new email address to their record so they can have access to everything on the SPE website.”

Even if you use a new, free email address for SPE purposes only, it will open the world of communications with SPE, as well as providing access to the “Members Only” webpages.

Visits are still being scheduled. If you would like more information or know of a school that would like the Plastivan to visit please contact Tom Miller at (586) 291-5289.

Dear Mr. Miller,

Just a little note sending our appreciation and gratitude for having Marjorie Weiner and the PlastiVan come back and visit our students again this year. We are very fortunate that we get to have a wonderful science day with Marjorie and the kids absolutely love the hands-on activities she does with them. She is the best! Our students learn so much about plastics, engineering and career opportunities available to them. It is one of the highlights of the 8th grade year in science for my students. We sincerely hope that we can see Marjorie and the PlastiVan again next year.
