DETAILS AT WWW.NEDA.ORG Looking Forward to the Fall Symposium September 2014 The NEDA Fall Symposium featuring Ingrid Klimke and Dr. Ina Goesmeier is scheduled to occur at Apple Knoll in Millis, MA on November 1 & 2, 2014. The program will include power point presentations by Dr. Goesmeier and live training demonstrations facilitated by Ingrid Klimke. The horses will range from 4 year olds to Grand Prix veterans; all will be demonstrating varied exercises with cavaletti. We will be looking for demonstration horse/rider partnerships from both dressage and eventing disciplines. Younger lower level horses can be 4, 5 or 6 and will be demonstrating the beginning process of cavaletti work. Intermediate or mid level horses need to be able to do simple changes and/or flying lead changes; they also will be using cavaletti. More experienced (older) horses will be exhibiting the more advanced movements using increasingly intricate exercises and again will be using cavaletti. All must be able to handle the situation of an arena surrounded by auditors. The application process is outlined on the NEDA website under the Fall Symposium page. Applications for riders must be submitted by October 1, 2014 in order for the committee to complete the selection process and provide the demonstration horse/rider combinations that best illustrate the facilitator’s philosophy. Which brings up the age old question; how do the demonstration combinations get chosen? Please be assured it is not a popularity contest, nor is it a statement about anyone’s ability as a rider/trainer. It is the goal of the selection committee to provide the facilitator the horse/rider combination that can help demonstrate their method accurately and clearly to the auditor’s. Period. An applicant who is a perfectly wonderful rider with a fabulous horse may not be appropriate because they don’t present the issues the facilitator wants to address via their methodology. The online auditor sign up is live on the NEDA website and very easy to use. There is also a link to the Hampton Inn which is the host hotel. Space will be limited so we encourage you all to sign up as early as possible to ensure you have a spot. When booking your hotel room you must request the NEDA rate. There is a significant discount available to NEDA members who pre-register. Depending on availability, there will be walk-in rates on a per day basis. Again, all the fees are listed on the Auditor Forms posted on the NEDA website. If you have any additional questions and/ or are having any issues registering please contact Kate O’Connor at fallsym@neda. org. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

NEDA is Evolving and We Need Your InvolvementBY KATHY MCHUGH

We have added several new board members in the past year. After attending board meetings for the past year they have commented that they had no idea how much effort goes into making an organization like NEDA function. Over 40 years, NEDA has gone from a small group of dressage enthusiasts seeking to introduce this newly discovered but very ancient equestrian discipline to fellow New Englanders to a large and robust organization that manages the largest

dressage show in the United States, along with internationally known education symposia, judge training programs, schooling shows, support for breed shows, juniors and young riders, amateurs and professionals. At the same time, the world has also become more complex, along with the competing demands on the time and energy of those who continue to support the expansion and appreciation of dressage in New England. The convergence hasn’t always been smooth, and the leaders of NEDA have sought to evolve the organization, the board, and the volunteer effort needed to make it all happen.

The board has expanded in an effort to make the jobs more manageable for modern riders, seeking to balance, work, family and horses, and we’ve expanded our volunteer effort into a veritable army of volunteers needed to make something as large as Fall Festival even happen. If you are a competitor, imagine for a moment what you might pay for entry to a show where scribes, ring stewards, scorers, and stable managers were all paid

positions. We are really lucky to be able to compete in an environment that is so well supported by volunteer effort. There is also the monumental task of organizing the volunteer workforce for each event, and managing the process of building a competition, symposium, or training session for judges or sport horse handlers. In addition your board of directors seeks to take the long view, thinking about what kinds of activities will be appealing to our members in future years and beginning well ahead to plan for those evolving needs.

Now your board is taking another look at the way it functions. We are eager to build a pipeline of talent and enthusiasm for dressage leadership in New England and are considering ways we can evolve to encourage participation, not just as volunteers but in leadership roles as well within the organization. We hope you’ll stay tuned for new opportunities to get involved, find out how much fun it can be to be a planner as well as a rider, and grab the reins of leadership for the future of our sport.

Kath McHugh

After six days of entries, on Saturday 8/2 Show Secretary Debra Reinhardt had 736 rides in / 251 horses. Those riders are guaranteed their warm up classes. It looks like the wait list for the Open classes will have started the second week of entries. We have 13 CDI entries the first week. All in all, this is the strongest entry we have ever had this early in the entry period.

There are currently hundreds of entries waiting to be processed.

Exciting things are emerging every day now ….

This year’s Saturday evening Competitors Party is once again sponsored by The Equestrian Center at Pineland Farms. The theme this year is “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” and will feature our traditional $100 cash awards to the Best Decorated Golf Cart and the best Hula Hooper.

High Score Awards for NEDA Members. Fie Andersen/ Equito Dressage and David Collins/CenterlineStables are again sponsoring high score awards for current NEDA members, to be awarded at the Competitor Party Saturday night. Four NEDA members will be lauded for highest score Thursday, Friday, Saturday classes: high scoring Training – Fourth Open / highest scoring Training – Fourth Adult Amateur / highest scoring Training – Fourth JrYR / highest scoring FEI Levels.

Each winner will receive ribbon, championship cooler and a copy of David Collins book “Dressage Masters”. This book, published in 2006, takes the reader into four of the greatest

training stables in the world. The master instructors express their philosophies and practices with regard to training horses and riders, preparing for and taking part in competitions, and the state of dressage in the United States and elsewhere in the world.

Elite Equine is donating four premier seating Red Sox tickets for any game of choice in 2015.

Cunningham and Cunningham may be providing new TV (or maybe more than one) as door prizes at the Competitor Party.

Finish Line Horse Products is returning to Fall Festival and will be roving the barns to distribute free product to our competitors. They will also provide free samples to our volunteers as well as product for door prizes at the Competitors Party Saturday evening.

Marshall Sterling Insurance is going to provide a roving coffee service cart, with water gratis to competitors, and coffee for all our staff and volunteers.

We have sent out two major Constant Contact mailings, one to sponsors and the other to volunteers. And we had a good response, with 17 vendors committed already, plus 10 VIP tables sold. The VIP tables were sold out last year, so if you are interested now is the time to act.

See you at the Show!

If you have ever been interested in the NEDA Scholarship Program, you may find it helpful to review the below information which explains what the Program is and how the awards are made. If you still have questions, you can always contact Angela Prenosil, Scholarship Chairman.

Listed below is the process from beginning to end that is used for screening applicants and awarding scholarships:

1. A NEDA member may request a scholarship application and/or an informational brochure at any time of the year. One is available online at www.neda.org or by contacting the Scholarship Chairman.

2. Scholarships are awarded twice a year in April and October. Completed applications must be received on the first of those respective months to be considered for awards in those time frames. Completed applications must be accompanied by four references (two personal and two from those who can attest to your riding, teaching, and/or training abilities). If the due date comes and an application is not

SCHOLARSHIP NEWS

How NEDA Scholarships WorkThe Mission of the NEDA Scholarship Committee is to provide educational

opportunities to members who have demonstrated exceptional

commitment to and/or excellence in the sport as well as service and ambassadorship within

this Association. In particular, the committee seeks to

support qualified members to take advantage of specific

opportunities for advancement with the understanding that

the membership and the sport will benefit as a result of the knowledge and experience

gained.

complete or arrives late, it cannot be considered for that allocation date and is returned to the applicant for future consideration. (This is to be fair to other applicants).

3. There are five different categories in which members may apply for Scholarships: International, Professional, Amateur, Young Rider and Breeder. All NEDA members can fall into one of these five categories. If you are unsure which category makes sense for you, you can always check with the Scholarship Chairman.

4. The Scholarship Committee (consisting of approx.10 members), meets shortly following the deadlines to review all applications and allocate scholarships depending upon availability of funds, qualifications of applicants, etc.

5. The Committee screens each application with a uniform set of criteria, eliminating the possibility of subjective selection or favoritism. While the criteria are slightly different for each category, they generally include such benchmarks as Length of NEDA membership, Volunteer History, Other Scholarships Received, Goal of Program, Competition Level, Previous Awards and Recognition, Benefit to NEDA’s membership, Timeliness of Goal, Credibility and Reputation, Ambassadorship and Affect on Professional Contribution/Educational Purpose. In the Young Rider category one of the criteria is Character: Including Scholastic, Leadership, Responsibilities, Teamwork, etc. Within each of the criteria a candidate may accrue up to 5 points. For example: In the criteria for Length of NEDA membership, a candidate would earn 1 point for “Under 2 years”, 2 points for “2-4 years”, 3 points for “5-9 years”, 4 points for “10-15 years”, and 5 points for “Over 15 years”.

Angela Prenosil

Page 8: NEDA Sept 2014 Tip of the Hat

8 A TIP OF THE HAT | NEDA.ORG September 2014

8. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents holding a Green Card, and in good standing with NEDA. Scholarship money must be used to participate in educational programs that include, but are not limited to, seminars, workshops, clinics and training programs offered by recognized and/or certified instructors. Programs for which the money is requested must have a stated objective and must be for the specific purpose of advancing the rider’s/official’s skills or individual’s standing in the dressage community (e.g., the purpose can be to attend an AHSA seminar to move from one judging level to the next, but not to attend a clinic required to maintain one’s card).

9. The Scholarship Chairman then notifies all applicants of the outcome. Those who have been awarded scholarships are mailed a “Letter of Agreement” that is a simple contract between the member and NEDA that outlines where, when and how the money will be used as well as what the applicant is willing to do for NEDA in return. Some ways that members give back for their scholarship assistance are giving clinics, organizing a clinic or a fundraising event for Scholarships, judging, writing an article, and/or being available for publicity, photos, etc. The Letter of Agreement also instructs the recipient to provide receipts to the Treasurer for all of his/her expenses associated with the scholarship. It also explains that if for some reason the recipient does not complete the program for which the award was made, any unused portion of the funds must be returned.

We hope that this information is helpful. We encourage everyone (including you Young Riders out there!) to utilize this program when appropriate.

If you are really feeling unsure about applying, feel free to ask questions! This program is here for you, for the membership to be able to grow and learn.

One of the goals of the committee is to investigate opportunities to endow our Fund further. If any of you have ideas on fundraising, capital campaigns, or planned giving programs that would help grow the Scholarship Fund, please contact Angela or any member of the Scholarship Committee.

We are very interested in your input. The more people get involved, the more successful we can all be. Donations can be made at any time of the year. Make checks payable to the NEDA (designating Scholarships) and mail to either the Committee Chairman (address below) or the NEDA Treasurer.

Please note that there is always a space on your membership renewal form to make a contribution. Even better, consider organizing your own fund-raising event for the Scholarship Program…every little bit counts!

To receive an application and/or information about scholarships, or if you have any questions, contact:

Angela Prenosil PO Box 398, Thorndike, MA 01079 413.627.2699 [email protected].

6. To be considered for an award, an applicant must accrue a minimum of 60% of the total possible points. Professionals applying to train internationally must receive a minimum score of 68% to be considered for Scholarship amounts above $2000. If no candidate accrues the minimum score, no award is given in that category. The money is held to be awarded in the next application period. A qualifying score does not automatically mean monies will be awarded – it is just a baseline. The Committee attempts at all times to keep focused on how the overall membership can benefit from the educational opportunity the scholarships are providing.

*Note: that approximately 40% of an applicant’s total possible score revolves around what they’ve done for NEDA in the past and what they could potentially contribute in the future.

7. Current maximum suggested allotments for Scholarships per applicant are as follows: Amateurs/$1000, Young Riders/$1000, Professionals or Breeders/$2000, International level up to $4,000. It is hoped that in any given year, a mixture of applications from all categories would be received and awarded, although there are years when this may not be possible due to lack of unqualified applicants or the desire to make an extraordinary award to assist a highly qualified candidate in an Olympic or Championship year. It is hoped that in the coming years these award amounts can be increased.

Year-End Awards News

Having recently taken on the position responsible for NEDA Year-End Awards, I reviewed three years worth of award entry submissions… the findings were both fascinating and enlightening:

1. Year over year, many award winners advanced their horses one level while remaining in the award standings

2. Several award winners won awards in multiple divisions with different horses.

3. Most award winners remained NEDA members throughout this three year period.

Whatever one’s goals are for submitting scores for Year-End Award recognition, NEDA’s aim is to recognize and callout those folks striving to learn, advance and develop their horses talent to its fullest potential.

As the 2014 show season winds down, many of you are considering your scores and their eligibility for submission toward the 2014 NEDA Year-End Awards.

A quick set of reminders which may prove useful:

FINANCIAL

Let’s Talk about Financial Well BeingBY BETH BAUMERT, PRESIDENT & CEO OF THE DRESSAGE FOUNDATION

Money moves. It’s the nature of money. If I give you $10, how long will you have it? You might buy groceries with it, or you might add it to other money so you can pay your rent. You might add it to funds with which you plan to buy a car some day. You might give it to someone who needs it more than you. It’s hard to make money stop moving. You earn it and then you spend it. (Notice the sequence. You don’t spend it and then earn it. You earn it first and then spend it.)

People who are financially responsible “earmark” money that they earn. That is, they categorize expenditures into what you might call “buckets” of money. I like to call them buckets because it sounds like you have a lot of money even when you don’t at first.

• One bucket of money is for your necessary, fixed expenses. That might include your rent, your groceries, your phone-internet bill, fuel for your car, insurance, taxes and other expenditures that you consider necessary.

• One bucket of money is to save for something important. Maybe you know your car may only last two more years so you’re saving for the car you will need in the future.

• For developing professional riders, a training program is another necessary expense. You need to put aside some funds for your training.

• One bucket of money is to give away to a cause that you’re passionate about. The universe gives to those who give. I’m not sure how that works, but I’m old enough to know that it works. It’s a Law of the Universe. I’m not saying you should give to TDF (although that would be very nice), but you should give to some cause that’s greater than you. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you can’t give enough to make a difference because even if you start out by giving away $25 a year, that’s something. That means you have designated a bucket--even though it may be small--of money to give away for a cause that’s greater than yourself.

• One bucket of money should be for you to save forever for your retirement. It seems ridiculous to think of that now, but later I will give you a very compelling reason to start now. My favorite quote about personal finances came from a young person who said, “If I’m financially fine right now, and I’m fine for the future, I figure I’m totally fine.” That means that from the very beginning, you save for your future; you pay yourself by starting to save when you’re very young. That’s

especially important if you’re going to pursue a career that is financially challenging. Training horses definitely falls into that category, so I want to talk about saving for your future again later.

Now I want to talk a little bit about The Dressage Foundation (TDF). TDF is, financially, like a bank. Donations come in from people who want to support the sport of dressage. Then TDF invests that money in several different ways:

• TDF investment advisors invest the funds in the traditional way: In stocks of solid, respectable companies, in bonds and in CDs.

• TDF awards prizes and grants to worthy recipients, and that’s an investment too. For example, when Catherine Chamberlain (AZ) was chosen for the International Dream Program (formerly called Olympic Dream) in 2012, TDF made a good investment because when Catherine came back, she spread the word about what she learned; she rode better and taught better than she would have if she hadn’t gone on that trip to Europe. As a bonus, Catherine has done fundraisers for TDF, and she has given back financially too!

Whereas TDF is, financially, like a bank, emotionally, it’s made up of a group of people like you who are passionate about dressage. We are a little army of donors that seek to “up the game” for riders at all levels. That is, we have grants for young riders, graduate young riders, adult amateurs, breeders, judges, instructors and high performance riders. We want to, bit by bit, change the game across the board.

Now, I’ve already mentioned how easy it is to spend money.TDF is the same. It’s really fun to give money away, but those awards depend on donors--big donors and small donors. The big donors of TDF are like the generals, colonels and majors of our little army. They are directly responsible for the grants that TDF is able to award. Some of them are: Carol Lavell, her father Gordon Cadwgan, Maryal Barnett, Renee Isler, Ralph Dreitzler, Anne Ramsay, the Boomer family, Violet Hopkins and others. They are directly responsible for the grants that TDF awards--which was nearly $200,000 last year. These funds that are given as grants and awards are “restricted,” which means they can not be used to pay ordinary TDF operating expenses. Restricted funds are reserved for grant-giving.

This article is based on the talk given at the USDF/USEF Young Rider Graduate Program held in January 2014 in Wellington, Florida. Whereas TDF President, Beth Baumert wanted to talk about The Dressage Foundation grants available to young people, she couldn’t help but put herself in their shoes and think of what she wishes someone had told her when she was their age. Here is the substance of her talk on what happens to money--personal money and TDF money.

Page 20: NEDA Sept 2014 Tip of the Hat

20 A TIP OF THE HAT | NEDA.ORG September 2014

The smaller donors, who are the captains, lieutenants and foot soldiers in our little army are indispensable because they implement the ideas of our generals, colonels and majors. Some of them add to the restricted funds that are given as awards, but they also help pay for TDF’s operating expenses. Some of the major donors help with operating expenses too. Just as you, in your personal finances, have necessary expenses, the TDF office has printing, mailing, paying our extraordinary staff and professional advisors. The donors who help pay the expenses of operating TDF are extraordinarily important because, without them, we couldn’t survive.

Now to get back to your personal expenses: Financial well being is within the reach of almost everyone, but it has to do with the buckets of money for saving and for giving away. The one for giving is from-your-heart generosity, and the one for saving comes from your head. Paying yourself is just smart.

The US government has provided an avenue for you to become financially comfortable forever--that’s with a Roth IRA. An IRA is an Individual Retirement Account, and the key to its success is to start saving very early in life. If you don’t know

what a Roth IRA is, learn about it online. I’m going to give you some examples. Currently, you are allowed to save $5500 per year in a Roth IRA, but even if can you only save $2500 per year, and you start when you’re 21, and the market does its average thing over the next 49 years, you’ll have over $1.5 million--tax free--when you’re 70 years old. If, however, you don’t start saving until you’re 30 years old, you’ll have about $1 million and if you’re 40 years old when you start, you’ll have $475,000, and if you’re 50 when you start, you’ll have about $125,000. Are you getting the idea? If you don’t know about Roth IRAs, learn about them online and start saving as early as possible. It will make you feel financially whole.

And don’t forget about the bucket of money that you give away to a cause that’s greater than yourself. Generosity is always rewarded. It’s the personal quality that somehow magically bounces back to you. The Universe gives to those who give.

I wish you all great financial well being and, of course, success with your horses.

Most important, to see how The Dressage Foundation can help you reach your dressage goals, check it out online at www.dressagefoundation.org!
