PREVIEWING VILLANOVAUnder Jay Wright, Villanova has been one of the most consistent programs in the Big East over the last decade. The

Wildcats have reached the NCAA Tournament in nine of the past 10 years and have won the Big East regular season conference title in each of the past two years. The Wildcats went 33-3 last year before getting upset by North Carolina State in the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament. This year, Villanova is picked to win the Big East and returns a pair of starters in 2015-16. The returnees are highlighted by Big East Co-Player of the Year Ryan Arcidiacono, who averaged 10.1 points and 3.5 assists per game last year. Senior forward Daniel Ochefu gives Villanova an inside presence, as he averaged 9.2 points and 8.5 rebounds a game last year and had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the Wildcats’ opener. Tuesday’s matchup with the Huskers marks the first time Villanova has hosted a Big Ten team since March of 1989.

Series history: Villanova leads the all-time series, 2-0, while Tuesday’s meeting is the first between the two teams on the contiguous 48 states. The Wildcats victory in 1987 (70-53) took place at the Maui Classic, while the 1998 win (75-60) took place at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Ala. Nebraska is 32-36 all-time against current Big East members.

LAST TIME OUTAndrew White III and Jack McVeigh combined for 34 points

in their Husker debuts, as Nebraska opened the 2015-16 season with a 97-51 win over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday.

The Huskers shot 54 percent from the field, including 10-of-22 from 3-point range, in putting up their highest total since scoring 107 points against North Carolina A&T on Dec. 19, 2005.

White turned in a strong debut, hitting 7-of-10 shots from the field, including four 3-pointers, while McVeigh added 16 points off the bench, hitting all four of his long-range attempts. Shavon Shields added 13 points, while Nick Fuller rounded out the Huskers’ double-figure efforts with 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench.

White and McVeigh paced NU in the early going, as both scored 10 first half points to lead the Huskers to a 43-21 halftime lead. McVeigh delivered the knockout blow, scoring 10 straight Husker points in an 18-2 surge, turning a 21-11 lead into a 39-13 blowout with 4:23 left in the half.

Damian Young led Mississippi Valley State in scoring with 13 points, as the Delta Devils shot just 26 percent and committed 21 turnovers.

UP FOR A CHALLENGEWith Tuesday’s inaugural Gavitt Tipoff Games matchup at

Villanova, the Huskers will look to continue its run of success in conference challenge games. The Huskers are 6-2 in its eight conference challenge matchups dating back to its days in the Big 12 Conference.

The Huskers went 3-1 during the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series, equaling the best performance by a Big 12 school in the event during the event’s four-year tenure. Since joining the Big Ten, Nebraska is 3-1 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, including a current three-game winning streak under Tim Miles.

WHITE, MCVEIGH SHOW SCORING PUNCHWith the departure of three starters who are playing professionally, including two in the NBA D-League (Terran

Petteway and Walter Pitchford), the biggest question was who could fill the scoring void for the Huskers, especially Petteway’s team-high 18.1 ppg. The Huskers showed balance in the opener, putting four players in double figures, a feat which happened only once in 2014-15.

Junior Andrew White III has shown early that he could be a go-to scorer for the Big Red. The 6-foot-7 wing had 18 points in the Huskers’ exhibition win over Northern State and followed it up with a career-high 18 points in NU’s season opener on Saturday. White was efficient, hitting 7-of-10 shots from the field, including four 3-pointers, in just 16 minutes of

action. It was the most points by a Husker making his debut since Andre Almeida had 20 points in his debut at the start of the 2010-11 season.

Another Husker who turned in a strong effort in his college debut was Jack McVeigh. The 6-foot-8 wing came off the bench and totaled 16 points, including 4-of-4 from 3-point range, in just 13 minutes of action. His 16 point effort was the highest total by a true freshman since Joe McCray had 23 points in his collegiate debut in 2004 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

SHIELDS GIVE HUSKERS RETURNING 1,000-POINT SCORER

For the first time since 2007, Nebraska returns a 1,000-point scorer to the lineup, as Shavon Shields now has 1,140 points after scoring 13 points in NU’s season opener. It marks the first time since All-Big 12 center Aleks Maric began his senior season with 1,111 career points and just ninth time in program history that the Huskers had a returning 1,000-point scorer.

Shields may have been one of the most underrated players in the Big Ten in 2014-15, as the 6-foot-7 wing averaged 15.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. He led NU in rebounding for the second straight year and was second on the team in both scoring and assists. He ranked among the Big Ten leaders in scoring (ninth), rebounding (14th) and free throw percentage (.827, fifth). Shields was one of only three players from a power

conference to average 15.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in 2014-15, joining National Player of the Year Frank Kaminsky (Wisconsin) and Tyrone Wallace (Cal). Shields has 56 career games in double figures, including 14 career 20-point performances and a pair of 30-point

efforts. He scored a career-high 35 against Omaha (11/25/14) and had 33 points against Illinois (2/14/14). Shields is one of just 14 players in school history with multiple 30-point games Shields is just the second player in school history to be a three-year captain and is a returning first-team Academic

All-American. In 2014, he was also one of 16 national finalists across all of Division I athletics for the 2014 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award. Shavon is also a nominee for the Senior Class Award and the NABC Good Works Team and is active in the

community. That should be no surprise as his father, Will, is a former NFL Man of the Year for his efforts in the Kansas City Community. The elder Shields was enshrined into the NFL Hall of Fame last August and was already a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

HANGING THEIR HAT ON DEFENSE

One of the keys to Nebraska’s success over last two seasons has been an emphasis on improved defense. In 2013-14, NU’s midseason turnaround was keyed on the defensive end, as a team that was last in field goal defense entering Big Ten play finished second in the conference in field goal percentage. Last year, it was the Huskers’ defense that kept the team in nearly every game despite an offense which struggled for consistency. NU finished the 2014-15 season 24th nationally in

defensive efficiency according to KenPom.com, marking the second straight year that Nebraska has had a top-25 defense. Nebraska’s field goal defense was one of its best

in recent memory, as the Huskers held opponents to 40.4 percent shooting, which is the fifth-lowest total by a Husker defense in the 3-point era (since 1986-87). Nebraska allowed only one team to shoot over 50 percent in 2014-15. Lost in the offensive performance was that Nebraska held MVSU to just 25.9 percent, which is the lowest by any

Husker opponent since Grambling shot 25.0 percent on Dec. 21, 2010. Under Miles, NU is 31-10 over the past four seasons when holding opponents to under 40 percent shooting.

YOUTH MOVEMENTWith only five returning players who saw time for the

Huskers last year, Nebraska is one of the youngest teams in the country in 2015-16. Nebraska’s 10 newcomers, which includes Andrew White III, who did not play last year, tie for third most nationally. The Huskers also have seven freshmen, which ties for fourth nationally. Of the nine programs with seven or more freshmen, three (Nebraska, Ohio State and Wisconsin) are in the Big Ten.

In 2014-15, the Big Ten set conference records for total attendance (3,076,641) and attendance in conference games only (1,677,589). It marked the first time in history that the conference has eclipsed the three million mark in total attendance. Season tickets for the general public and for students were sold out by October, marking the third straight year that they

were sold out before the start of the season. Nebraska has enjoyed success in Pinnacle Bank Arena, posting a 26-7 record in the building. NU is 13-2 against non-

conference opponents at Pinnacle Bank Arena following Saturday’s season opener.

SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOMThe Huskers have enjoyed success in the classroom under Tim Miles. In 2014-15, Nebraska placed a Big Ten-high five

players (Nick Fuller, Kye Kurkowski, Trevor Menke, Shavon Shields and Leslee Smith) on the Academic All-Big Ten team. Over the last three years, 11 Huskers have earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades. In addition, nine of the 10 seniors who have played for Miles have received their degrees, while both seniors in 2015-16 are on track to receive their degrees in 2016.

BECKNER JOINS HUSKER STAFFIn addition to the newcomers on the roster, the other new face is assistant coach Phil Beckner, who joined the staff in

August. Beckner served as an assistant coach with the NBA D-League Oklahoma Blue in 2014-15. Prior to that, Beckner spent seven years at Weber State.

HUSKERS FACE CHALLENGING SCHEDULE IN 2015-16The Huskers will face a daunting schedule in 2015-16, playing nine games against foes that were ranked in the AP

Preseason Top-25. NU’s first game against a ranked opponent comes Tuesday, Nov. 17, when the Huskers face No. 11 Villanova at the Gavitt Games in Philadelphia. The Big Ten features six ranked teams, which is the most of any conference. That group includes Maryland (third), Michigan State (13), Indiana (15), Wisconsin (17), Purdue (23) and Michigan (25).

In addition, four other NU opponents (Cincinnati, Miami, Rhode Island and Iowa) also received votes in the AP poll, while Ohio State received votes in the USA Today preseason coaches poll.

HUSKER LEGACIESThe 2015-16 Huskers have a number of players with relatives in college athletics. Senior Shavon Shields is the son of

former Husker and Kansas City Chiefs great Will Shields, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last August. Four other Husker players have fathers who played basketball collegiately (Anton Gill, Michael Jacobson, Tai Webster and Andrew White III), while Ed Morrow Jr.’s mother, Nafeesah Brown, was a star player at Nebraska in the mid-1990s.

A proven program builder who has enjoyed success at the Division I, Division II and NAIA levels, Tim Miles was named the 27th basketball coach at the University of Nebraska on March 24, 2012. He is believed to be the only active coach who has made national tournament appearances at four-year schools at the Division I, Division II and NAIA levels.

In 2014-15, the Huskers garnered their first national ranking since 1995 and enjoyed record-setting attendance numbers, establishing a school-record attendance of 15,569 fans per game to rank 10th nationally. Terran Petteway earned All-Big Ten honors for the second straight year and earned an invitation to training camp with the Atlanta Hawks. Miles’ program also enjoyed a first in the classroom, as Shavon Shields became the first Husker basketball player to be named a first-team Academic All-American.

In 2013-14, Miles was named Big Ten Coach of the Year and Jim Phalen National Coach of the Year after guiding the Huskers to an 11-7 Big Ten mark and a fourth-place finish after the team was picked to finish 12th in the preseason. NU’s 11 conference wins were its highest total since 1965-66, while the fourth-place finish was the Huskers’ best since 1997-98. Miles became the first Husker coach to garner conference coach of the year accolades since 1991 after guiding the Huskers to their first NCAA appearance in 16 years.

The 2012-13 Huskers surpassed nearly every pundit’s expectation, going 15-18, including three wins over NCAA Tournament teams and the program’s first-ever Big Ten Tournament win.

Before taking over the Nebraska program, Miles spent the previous five seasons building the Colorado State program. He increased his victory total in each of his five years at CSU, culminating in a 20-12 record and the school’s first NCAA appearance in nine seasons during his final year in Fort Collins. After winning 16 games in his first two years, his teams went 55-41 over the last three years, reaching postseason play in each campaign.

The 2011-12 Rams posted the school’s first 20-win season since the 1997-98 campaign while playing a schedule that was rated as the fourth-toughest in the country. Colorado State set a school record with three wins over ranked teams and placed three players on the All-Mountain West teams, and Miles was named the District VIII Coach of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association for his efforts. The Rams, one of four Mountain West teams to receive bids in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, averaged 70.1 points per game on the season and topped the Mountain West Conference in field-goal percentage (47.1), 3-point percentage (40.0) and free throw percentage (76.8).

Three of his players earned All-Mountain West honors, marking the program’s most honorees in its half century affiliation with the WAC or Mountain West Conference. In 2010-11, Miles guided the program to a 19-13 record, a fourth-place finish in the Mountain West, and a berth in the NIT.

With 20 years of experience as a head coach at four institutions, he has compiled a career record of 330-269 that includes three conference championships and seven postseason tournament appearances.

Before taking over the Colorado State program, Miles spent six seasons at North Dakota State, guiding the Bison through the transition to the Division I ranks. He won at least 16 games in each of his final five seasons at the school, including the program’s first three years at the Division I level. Miles’ tenure at NDSU was highlighted by a pair of road wins over top-15 squads in his final two seasons.

Miles showed his ability to turn around programs during his tenure at Southwest Minnesota State University. He took a program that had only one winning season in the previous decade and went 78-39 in his four seasons at the school, recorded the first 20-win season in school history, and led Southwest Minnesota State to its first back-to-back winning seasons in more than two decades.

Miles began his head coaching career at Mayville (N.D.) State University, guiding the program to a 35-22 record from 1995 to 1997 and a pair of conference titles. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Northern State for six seasons from 1989-90 through 1994-95 and helped the Wolves to five NAIA playoff appearances and five regional titles. He was the recruiting coordinator for NSU and was responsible for bringing in and coaching five All-Americans at that school.

A native of Doland, S.D., he graduated from the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D., in 1989 and earned a master’s degree in health and physical education from Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D., in 1990. He was inducted into the University of Mary Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.
