PRESIDENT’S LETTER
The Allendale Tournament in April was a success. Thanks to all who participated and to Marilyn Cavell and
her team. Our next sectional tournament is scheduled for September 14-16. There are events applicable to all
masterpoint levels, and we encourage members to participate particularly those trying to earn silver points to
make Life Master .
Congratulations to the winners of the Bob Johnke Teams held on April 28. The dinner between sessions was
again wonderful. Thanks to Tod Thorgersen, Pam Mills and Doree Sobel for their work in making this an-
other memorable event. For those of you who missed this event - Don't miss the Reitman Teams on October
27. It's a great deal and a lot of fun. Form your teams now!
Congratulations to the winners of the Pro-Am held on June 23-24. It's great to see all the players coming out
for this event.
The 0-99 Workshop & Game will be held at a new location this year. Players with less than 100 masterpoints
are encouraged to participate in this great event which includes a lesson by Amy Nellissen, ACBL Master
Teacher, lunch and a Silver Point Game. The game will be held on Saturday, October 20, at the Community
Church of Hohokus.
There was a vacancy on the Board of Directors, and the Board elected Peri Namerow to fill the unexpired
term. Please join the Board in welcoming Peri.
At the May 5 Board of Directors meeting we elected the Nominating Committee to develop next year's slate.
The Board members of the committee are Pam Mills (Chair), Pat Linnemeyer, and Doug Cestone. The non-
Board members include Cyndi Morrissey, Mary Giannella, Miyoko Boswell and Joanne Klaus. Anyone inter-
ested in serving on the Board should contact one of the Nominating Committee members.
Enjoy the summer and we'll see you in September.

This ‘n That From Your District Director
As you may have heard by now,
ACBL CEO Bahar Gidwani was re-
lieved of his duties at the end of April,
and a new Search Committee has been
appointed to identify candidates to
succeed him. In the interim, Joe Jones,
chief financial officer, will be in
charge.
During the recent meetings in Phila-
delphia, the Board made substantial
progress toward paperless meetings,
with many Committee meetings con-
ducted via teleconference prior to
Philadelphia, and all motions tracked
electronically during the meetings,
including comments and amendments.
Another innovation in Philadelphia
was a “rubber bridge room”, where
free play was available for two hours
each morning, in hopes of attracting
more social players who might have
future interest in duplicate play. Also,
new convention charts were approved
(see upcoming Bulletins), and the NAP
Flight B and C finals will be moved to
the second Saturday and Sunday of the
spring NABC beginning next year.
Heartiest congratulations are in order
for the District 3 winners of the
0-10,000 Swiss: Peter Stein, Steve Ar-
shan, Len Helfgott and Rich Ross, all
from our own Unit 140.
The 2018 budget was approved with a
$471,000 deficit, after a $608,000 sur-
plus in 2017, and a preliminary
projection of a break even budget for
2019. The deficit is intended to fund
expenses directed at membership
growth and completion of a Customer
Relationship Management system to
replace the outdated AS400 system
in use for many years. Sadly, the
hoped for membership growth has not
yet materialized for the ACBL as a
whole, although District 3 membership
is up by almost 6% this year! Outside
auditors also reported on 2017
financials, with a “clean” opinion and
no significant issues.
Locally, we were disappointed with a
slight decline in attendance at our
Tarrytown tournament in January, in
spite of the terrific venue and strong
support from New Jersey and New
York City. We will need more players
next year in order to maintain this
tournament, which has suffered sig-
nificant losses for two years. Our
situation has been exacerbated by a
disastrously low turnout at the Norma
Shelley spring regional tournament in
Albany. Despite a favorable venue,
attendance was down 40% and we will
be cancelling plans for another tourna-
ment in Albany next year.
See you in Fairfield!

Winning at the Goldman By Steve Nellissen
Playing in the 4th and final session with my old friend and great player and partner Adam Wildavsky,
we have an auction where with minimal values I have to make a difficult decision at the 6 Level. I must
explain that Adam's (South) Three Spade jump was "fit showing" promising at least nine cards in
Spades and Hearts. At team scoring it might be best to take out "Insurance" and bid 6 Hearts as that is
unlikely to go down more than 3 tricks (-500) against what might be their making 6D slam (1370 vul-
nerable). At matchpoints we hadn't had any Zero's yet and it was the third round so I guessed with my
Ace to pass. The first two tricks were our Major suit Aces dropping both offside singleton Kings and I
was of course greatful not to be losing those finesses desperately declaring at the Five or Six level try-
ing to keep my score under -500. Plus 100 was a fine score obviously, proving it's often better to be
lucky and than good!
