The Fall Concourier will have reports and photos from the national. Look for it in a few weeks. Over 350 COGgers and friends were able to come and enjoy the riding nirvana of Vermont and New England at its best. Only a couple of week later the rally area was devastated by the Hurricane Irene. Many roads, including several major thoroughfares like Route 100 and Route 4 succumbed to the might power of all the rain water dropped during the storm. Historic 100+ year old covered bridges were lost. The saddest news was that a young lady who worked housekeeping at Snow Lake Lodge drowned when the car she was in was swept away by water. Today the temperature was 20 degrees cooler this evening than it was in the morning. This is a sure sign that the fall season is upon us. Cooler temps make this my favorite season to ride. The down side is the possibility of wet leaves on the ground, and consideration that winter will be rearing its ugly head soon. The 2011 national is in early June, only a couple of weeks after when we traditionally hold the Northeast Spring Fling Rally. Please let me know if you have feelings one way or another if we should put the Fling on hold this year so it does not conflict with the national. It’s Northeast Area Director election time. COGnitions Random thoughts and ramblings from your Area Director

Five weeks ago we were enjoying all that Vermont and the COG 2011 National Rally had to offer. The feedback has been very positive. We had a terrific group of volunteers who were key in making this event run smoothly. You all should be proud of your accomplishment.

As the riding season winds down I ask all members & staff to begin working on the plans for activities for next year so we can add them to the Event Calendar before next Spring.

The 2011 national is in early June, only a couple of weeks after when we traditionally hold the Northeast Spring Fling Rally. Please let me know if you have feelings one way or another if we should put the Fling on hold this year so it does not conflict with the national.

It’s Northeast Area Director election time. Complete info should be in the upcoming Concourier, but here’s a summary. The NEAD position is a 2-year term that begins JAN-1-2012, so we need to begin the process of nominations now. Northeast members can nominate another NE member or yourself, but both the nominee and person making the nomination must be a COG member in good standing. All nominations must be received on or before November 12, 2011 or it won’t be considered valid.

Email nominations to Bob Dombrowe [email protected] or mailed using the form in the Fall Concourier. Your nomination must include 1) Name & COG # of the person being nomination; 2) Name & COG # of person making nomination.

must have an opinion related somehow to motorcycling. If you do, send it in for the newsletter. Send me stuff, anything, to help fill out the final (upcoming) edi-tion of the year! Start on it now ☺

Around the NORTHEAST News from your Assistant Area Directors (complete list of AADs on back page). Philly+NJ south—Jim Ansbro #8443 There was the earth-quake, then Irene reared her ugly head, and to add insult to injury, Lee came through, so the back roads in our area are a complete mess. The main routes, Rte 1, I-95, etc., are back to normal, but our beloved country roads are left a mess, though with road repairs occur-ring, more are opening almost daily. Reluctantly some will take a lot more time for major repairs to be com-pleted. So, that said, our covered bridge run will be delayed, and will post a time (hopeful for this year) as soon as we have a favorable road report. The Wild-wood Bike Week was also bathed with the wet stuff for most of the time, just no getting around it this year. Thank-fully we had a decent turnout at the National, and we all dodged a bullet with the weather, actually it was a great week weather wise. The Fall Rally in Lake George is just a week away, and the anticipation to ride on the routes that Terry set-up prior to the storms was high, but since several roads suf-fered damage—some of it major—Terry states he is adjusting the routes. Helluva guy! To all traveling there, enjoy and be safe, plus bring beer and cigars for Terry. Metro NY/NJ—Terry Faherty #792 Greetings once again from Gotham! Man, summer is already on the way out, and unfortu-nately with quite a bang. Planning was proceeding apace for the Lake George rally on Sept 22-25, until Hurricane Irene came to town. The hotel is fine but the roads in the region took quite a hit. I've dropped my 3 planned Ver-

mont routes due to the extent of the damage. As it is, even my NY routes will probably be affected. It's still a go though! The National was a great time! Personally, I put 1500 miles on my steed over the week. The weather was great and the turnout was darn good. As the season winds down per-haps I'll try another meet and greet lo-cally. And don't forget before we know it, it will be time for our Javitz festivi-ties. Hope to see you all out there... this time of year is my favorite for rid-ing. Not too hot, not too cold...just right! Keep the rubber side down. Western PA - Joe Cyprych #4665 We just came back from our COG in Canaan weekend and want to give a big thanks to all that attended (see pic on page 5). First off, sorry about the room mix up for a few of you... the resort was supposed to have us all in the same building and I let them know of their mistake. Anyhow we all found each other and I hope all had a good time. It’s hard to find an area with bet-ter riding than this. The weather turned out to be great and everyone went out to explore the roads. We had a mixture of folks from PA ,MD, VA, and DC ar-eas as well as NY state, NYC and Can-ada! (I hope I didn’t leave anyone out.) It was great to meet up with old and new friends again and it reminds me of what this club is all about: riding and the friendships you develop. With that, thanks again to all that attended and we’re looking forward to the next one. Take care. VT/NH/ME—Kevin Martin #145 Hi Gang, hope every-one’s doing well. Since it’s Saturday night be-fore hurricane Irene, I figured I’d get a jump on writing this article before Neil sends out his usual reminders to send in newsletter content for publishing and I have to scramble because I’m late writing something. First up, I’d like to talk about the Green

Mountain National that just finished a few weeks ago. Wow, what a great turn out for the rally and what a spectacular volunteer organization COG is. With-out the leadership of Steve Smith and all of the National Staff and Volunteers who gave up personal time to make this rally a great success, it would never have gone off as smooth as it did. Yes, we had a few hiccups, but that’s ex-pected given the fact that this was our first attempt at hosting a National, so: Thankyou, Thankyou, Thankyou, to everyone! I’d also like to thank the Mount Snow Resort, especially Rick Thorpe who worked with us for several months dur-ing the contract negotiation phase to lock in great rates and lodging ameni-ties to make everyone as comfortable as possible. A special thanks also needs to go out to Jennifer Gebhardt, our event coordinator, who worked tirelessly to make sure that everything went off without a hitch, and she did a wonder-ful job. I personally thought that the Mt. Snow facility was one of the nicest places I’ve stayed during a COG event and I hope we’re able to return there again some day. Appreciation and thanks are also in order for the many Industry member and non-member contributors who sup-ported this rally by donating door prizes to the National Banquet. The National door prize coordinator will be providing a full list of contributors in the next Concourier for full recognition across the membership. After the conclusion of the Vermont National, I finished my second week of vacation catching up on some long overdue projects and spending a lot of quality time with my 1 year old grand-son. The little guy is consuming much of my off time and weekends, and I love every minute. I also spent a lot of time thinking about what’s next for me in COG. I’ve been hosting rallies for COG since 1995 and when I assumed the role of Massachusetts AAD in 2000, I set a goal for myself that I would help organ-

ize a New England National within 10 years then hand the AAD controls over to someone else. Well I missed my per-sonal goal of 10 years by one, so after 11 years as the Northern New England AAD, and several regional rallies and one National Rally under my swingarm, I feel that it’s time for me to step aside and let someone new with fresh ideas take over, starting in 2012. To that end, I’ve asked Greg and Tracey Habel if they would be interested in taking over the AAD controls, and they graciously accepted. Greg and Tracey are very active COG Members and host a number of local events each year for the northern New England area, usually starting with their annual spring tech session, co-hosted by Greg’s brother-in-law Pat Mulloy and his lovely wife Sherry at their home in Monson MA. The Habels and the Mulloys also team up each summer to host a camping weekend at different area camp grounds, although I hesitate to refer to these events as “camping” weekends. You’ll know what I mean when you see how they host these events, it’s more like a luxury catered camping event. I have every confidence handing the AAD controls over to Greg and Tracy who will officially share this COG posi-tion, as they are a great team and have a terrific support system in Pat and Sherry, as well as the many shared COG friends we all have. Steve Smith is also very happy that the Habel’s have de-cided to assume the AAD position. As far as how the membership will be dis-tributed, I’ll leave that up to the Habels and Steve to work out, but I suspect that initially Greg and Tracey will ease in by taking over the MA AAD position and Steve may be looking for folks to volun-teer to support NH, ME, and VT areas. It’s been a great run, and I appreciate all of the support I’ve received from the Northern New England membership over the years. I’ll still be around, lead-ing a few rides through the year to sup-port Greg and Tracey’s area event schedule, and maybe some day I’ll host another rally as well. Right now, I’m

working on wrapping up the rest of the riding season and hope to see many of you at the Lake George Fall Rally. Thanks again for all of your friendship and support during my tenure as AAD, and no matter what the rest of the COG membership thinks, the NORTHEAST AREA RULES !!! NY Hudson Valley Northwest Bob Barbanti #7134 We had the July Meet & Greet in Newburgh, NY on Saturday, July 9th. It was a sunny, warm day with the hu-midity making it feel like almost 90 de-grees. But it wasn't raining which has lately been our Achilles Heel, possibly hurting attendance. Having a nice sunny day always makes for more enjoyable riding, even if it felt hot. But after all, it is summer! We had sixteen people attend the event. With a few notables: first off, Bruce Jansen gets our long distance rider award. Bruce came in traveling back from Wisconsin, where he was attending a BMW rally. Although it's unclear if his ride in from Pennsylvania was the furthest of the day or not, I awarded Bruce the title on merit! Second and a nice surprise, since I didn't know they were coming in from Rhode Island, was Brian and Andrea Felice,. I want to congratulate Brian on his ride from coast to coast in less than fifty hours, Well done! Then he had to ride back!!! Tom Taylor also rode in, at least two and a half hours from Bolton Landing NY, which was nice to see Tom again. Most people had at least an hour ride or more. So I'll just give thanks to all these people who came and made for another great event. Wayne and Nancy Jenkins, with Tony Cantele in tow. Also, "Wild" Bill Billig rode his very nice 84 (I think) Honda NightHawk S. and Greg "Mitch" Mitchell, all came in from Con-necticut. Bill Seeman and Mike Aldea, both rode in from New Jersey. Then there was the rest of us New Yorkers. Alex Benoit, Ben Otunu, Jonathan Gould, Cindy Barbanti and myself were the rest of the New York contingent!

In the end, we really didn't have a ride afterwards. It was pretty hot and most people went their own way. I brought out my old timer, C10 for a ride. So Jonathan and I went for a good ride on our C10's. I probably rode a little slower pace so hopefully I didn't put Jon to sleep! <LOL> August brought the COG National rally in West Dover, Vermont. We had a meet and greet on Thursday August 11th. It allowed for a day trip for people who couldn't attend the National. We met at the Mt. Snow Grand Summit Lodge then we rode out to Jamaica VT for lunch at a nice little coffee shop. It was-n't a long ride, but I had time restraints which limited my available time. We had seven attendees though. And most rode in for the day. All in all it turned out well. The September Meet & Greet on Sep-tember 10th was in danger of rain but it turned out to be a beautiful day. We had twelve people attend. Tom Taylor got the long distance award, coming in from Bolton Landing, NY. Newburgh was like a zoo, with motorcycles from all over North America. They were fire fighters motorcyclists, who rallied to make a ride to The World Trade Center, being the tenth anniversary of 9/11. They have come to pay their respects to the 343 fire fighters who lost their life in the attacks. I was impressed by some of the people I talked to. My hats off to them. Anyway, next up is the fall rally in Lake George, NY. I'm looking forward to this. Lake George has great riding, great at-tractions and is a beautiful area to visit if you've never been there. September is also the best month of the year to ride, in my opinion. So I hope to see y'all there. Up coming events include a meet & greet on both October 8th & Novem-ber 12th respectively. These of course will take place at the Gateway diner in Newburgh, NY. Feed back tell me that people like them being there. So for now, I'll keep having them in folk's keep showing up. RIDE&EVENT SCHEDULE Time listed is START time. See www.cog-online.org for updates.

(NY) THU-SUN 22-25 September 7PM COG-NE Fall Rally Guess what? It’s time for another of Scott & Terry’s Excellent Adventures!! The boys are bringing us back to Lake George, in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. Pack your electrics as mountain temperatures can be very cool in the fall. Complete details on www.cog-online.org.

(VA/KY) FRI-MON 7-10 October 4PM Breaks Interstate Park This is a full service State park that sits on the boundary line between VA & KY. It’s in a remote area but with some excellent motorcycle roads, limited traffic and lots of great scenery. Since it’s such a long haul for most of the mid-Atlantic area, FRI & MON are set aside as travel days with no organized rides planned. Routes will be provided for both Saturday (10/8) and Sunday (10/9). There is a nice lodge on premises with reasonable peak season rates (between $80 -$90, double occupancy plus modest seniors discount); reservations can be made by phone 276.865.4413). Lodge consists of 80 rooms in 6 buildings and I strongly recommend you make reservations early in the year… this is a very busy time of year for them and no rooms are blocked for us so it is first come, first served. Having stayed there before, I plan to try to get a room in the building that houses units 111-134; view out back is spectacular. Lodge also has a restaurant with good food and reasonable prices, and most meals (except when we’re on the road) will be there. Closest town about 10 miles away and meal options are a bit limited. Also, a nice campground in the park for those so inclined. Non-electric sites ~$15 or serviced $18-22/night. Book using the same number listed above for lodge reservations. http://www.breakspark.com/ Clyde Watson 804.771.3876 or 804.921.5896 cell [email protected]

(NY) SAT 8 October 11AM Newburgh Meet & Greet Join us for a lunch meet and greet on (usually) 2nd SAT of each month at the Gateway diner in Newburgh NY. It's a chance to meet some of the COG family and friends. We’ll be having lunch with the possibility of a short ride afterwards. I picked a fairly new diner on 300 in the Town of Newburgh,

within seconds from exit 17 on I-87 or exit 7S of I-84, located adjacent to the Hampton Inn on RT 300. BOB BARBANTI 845.895.1130 (H) 845.206.7406 (M) [email protected]

OPINION Using Our Evolved Traits By Neil Baldwin #5762 First things first, take note this column is titled “Opinion” not “Fact”. And with that said I will launch in to one of my tangents, this time concerning safety. Making ourselves visible and obvious to cage drivers is a good safety strategy be-cause it is when they don’t “see” us that they are far more likely to collide with us, which is never a good thing for either party but particularly serious for us. Colour, of bike or clothing, may be a fac-tor—although, just my personal prefer-ence, I draw the line at wearing a day-glow safety vest. I have also seen extraor-dinary feats of mechanical (and electrical) engineering applied in the attachment of all manner of light arrays (definitely in-creases conspicuity), as well as pulsating headlights—although I worry that some already distracted driver might take the wrong message from those: “but, Officer, [I looked up from my cell phone and] the guy on the bike flashed his lights to say it was okay for me to turn”.

I can’t claim to have anywhere near the miles under my belt as many COGgers but my approach to conspicuity has, to this point, been a low tech one that ap-plies some of the theory concerning how we humans evolved. One trait that is thought to be selected for is seeing things moving along the horizon, I guess mainly because those “things” may often have turned out to be potential meals. So those cave dwellers for whom such things caught their eye were more likely to thrive and pass on that trait. And so it is that some conclude we are predisposed to notice left-right movement more so than up-down. I tried a quick bit of Googling on this; while I couldn’t imme-diately find specific research to substanti-ate it, it does make sense and generally reflect my spatial perception. One way I put this into action is, for ex-ample, by making a slight-to-moderate back-and-forth swerve (within my lane) when approaching an intersection where I am concerned about a potential left-turner in front of me. I hope that my headlight making a horizontal movement back-and-forth will catch the driver’s eye more than just fixed point of growing intensity had I come straight in. Another

way is on the back of the bike I supple-ment the taillight with a 2” wide vertical strip of red reflective tape (the highly reflective DOT grade stuff) on the outer half of each saddlebag. Since the strips are vertical they move horizontally across a driver’s field of vision whenever the bike moves to the left or right. There was a beautiful silver C10 on the cover of the summer Concourier with what looked like two white small reflec-tors on the saddlebags. I thought a better application might be to place a vertical white reflective strip on the outer edge of the front end of each bag. Unless the rider is particularly, uh, “wide” then the forward-facing strips should have visibil-ity. I don’t know about all across the U.S. but up here in Canada daytime running lights are mandatory equipment on cars so their light should help illuminate those reflectors even in the day. (I know, I know, the libertarians in the crowd had disconnected the daytime running lights as needless government intervention.) If the whole idea of red and white tape strips all seems a bit too ugly then you can always use the “stealth” reflective stuff which looks flat black.
