COGnitions Random thoughts and ramblings from your Area Director I am extremely happy to report that Rudy Vedder, COG 9217, has joined the Northeast staff as AAD for Southeast Pennsylvania. Rudy noticed there was a void in his region and contacted me to find out how he could get involved to help. Please join me in welcoming Rudy aboard and please offer him your support to bring more COG activities to the southeast PA region. Another staff change to report is that Jim Miller has decided to step down as AAD WV/VA. I thank him for his service to the club and its members. While sad to see Jim go, this presents an opportunity for someone, or a couple of someones to take on the AAD role for WV and VA. There are several other AAD openings—see the staff listing on page 8. All you need to do this is to have the desire and motivation to have some fun riding and invite the rest of COG along. Spring Fling rally is less than 2 weeks away. I plan to be there as I really like visiting Wellsboro. The gas street lighting really adds to the old time, small town feel. I look forward to seeing everyone and enjoying the great riding available in the area. Please remember that COG continues to “go green” and will have only a few copies of sample ride route sheets. Please visit the online Member Library to download the GPS files and route sheets. Then only a couple of months later the Northeast Area rolls out the red carpet to all of COG when we host the 2011 National Rally in the Green Mountains of Vermont. Online and mail-in registration is open now. Details were provided in the latest Concourier magazine and also posted on the cog-online.org rally web pages. Please book rooms and register soon, and don’t forget to order your rally apparel when you register. The apparel will only be available by pre-order up to July 13. We are still looking for help. Please contact me if you want to volunteer, but are not sure what you can do. Dates for the Fall Rally are now locked in, and a motel has been selected. Rally host Scott Sorger has worked a deal with room rate around $50, but this requires a 3-night minimum. He says accommodations are basic. He will be arranging the Saturday dinner at Mario’s, which will be within walking distance. Complete details are forthcoming as these places just opened for the season and not ready to take reservations. A Call for Volunteers by Mike Aldea #528, Check-In Team Lead

As we prepare for the Green Mountain National Rally, one of the most labor intensive areas we will need help with is attendee Check-In. Combined with the new Hospitality Team this is when everyone’s rally experience starts and we want to make it a good one. Ideally we would like enough help to avoid any long lines and to make this a quick and painless bit of business for everyone involved. Can you spare some of your rally time to help out? It is a great way to meet other attendees and make new friends. Send an email with your contact info and your expected arrival day & time to [email protected] and we will add you to the list of those helping make the Green Mountain National a great rally.

COG is only as good as WE all make it. Let’s make it great!

Editor’s Corner Requests, random observations, and the

occasional rant. Neil Baldwin #5762 As I am piecing together the newsletter this eve-ning, I am listening to the Canadian general election results coming in on the radio so that’s my excuse for any errors you may find. I want to say special thanks to William Bellman #2029 for sending me his SIWIK (see page 7). I can tell you it is

often a challenge getting content in for the newsletter and having people like William send me stuff I can keep on hand… without even having to ask, beg or plead! So I am grateful for that and any other content that comes my way from COG-NE members. I am also grateful for the COG-NE AADs who consistently send me reports to insert in the newsletter and keep a connection with members. As you keep hearing and reading, COG is a volunteer-run organization. It is you—we—who make it happen.

2011 - Issue #2 - mid spring 3

Around the NORTHEAST News from your Assistant Area Directors (complete list of AADs on back page). Metro NY/NJ—Terry Faherty #792 Is it finally spring yet?!? I'm not quite sure here in NYC since the weather doesn't seem to want to get in step with the calen-dar just yet. We're in the home stretch now to the Spring Fling in Wellsboro so if you haven't registered and made some res-ervations, now is the time. I will proba-bly be meeting up with Steve Smith as he motors in from Connecticut for a nice backroads route to the rally. Hope to see you there! I'll also probably be in Lake George for Americade from Wednesday evening to Sunday if I can get the days off. I now stay in Queens-bury since my usual partner in crime, Scott Sorger, moved to the great white north. Always fun to troll the Tourexpo and take advantage of the great roads in the Adirondacks. Anyone who might be in town, drop me an e-mail, phone call, forum mail, and maybe we can get together for some hijinks. Speaking of Lake George, some progress has been made for the Fall Rally with a very rea-sonable rate for rooms being possible. The date is still getting nailed down, but we're trying to keep it in September rather than October. Lastly, I'm regis-tered for the National in Vermont...are you? Don't miss this one folks, the loca-tion is pretty much perfect. And if they finish paving Vermont SR 125 it will be even better!!! Keep the rubber side down and see you out there! ON (GTA) - Dave Clancy #5452 Our area’s meet & greet (and eat) the second Tues-day of the month is con-tinuing – see the details in the ride schedule. April’s meeting had a great turn-out and since May will be in motorcycle

weather finally, the next meeting we will expect even more motorcycles. I have booked my room and registered online for the ‘Spring Fling’ in Wells-boro, PA. It’s less than 4 hours from the Peace Bridge, a scenic town with great riding in the area and close to Finger Lakes wineries. Think about the Na-tional in Vermont – it’s reasonably close for us. See you Tues. May 10 at Mo-hawk Inn. Western PA - Joe Cyprych #4665 Hello fellow Coggers. Spring has sprung and I already have a few much needed rides in. We’re looking forward to the first event at Wellsboro… if you have never been there you need to go there. It’s a great area for riding and a great kickoff for the riding season. We’re looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting some new ones, so don’t be shy. Come on out and meet the gang. With that, I hope everyone can get out this year and attend a ride or event. As always feel free to contact me with any questions or ride ideas. See you on the road. Take care. NY Hudson Valley Northwest Bob Barbanti #7134 Well, spring is finally here! It's time to ride again for us here in the cold North-east. It was a brutal winter that ran into spring but it's over now and we’re on our way. Let me start off by thanking all the people who came out and kept the Newburgh Meet & Greets going right through the win-ter. The March M&G had ten people show up for lunch and a couple even were able to ride… outstanding in my book! The monthly second Saturday meet & greets continue on both June 11th and July 9th respec-tively, held again at the Gateway dinner in New-burgh, NY. Come on out for lunch and possibly a ride afterwards.

Upcoming events include a ride to Kundla's BBQ that will take place instead of the May M&G, on May 14th. Mike Aldea and I did this in September and it was a great day and eats. Mike will be leading the group this time from North Jersey. So come along and enjoy some good riding and BBQ! Then the next weekend May 19-22 will be the spring fling in Wellsboro, PA. I've been looking for-ward to this all winter. So if you can, do not miss this weekend of riding and cama-raderie. Next up on June 18-19 is a ride called the un-rally to Saratoga Springs, NY. I have a route that should be a great day for anybody who rides with me, that includes Ilion gorge. I call it the un-rally because its basically a ride that will be an overnight. It allows other groups or individuals to also come out on their own and enjoy the evening with some good ole' COG camaraderie over dinner and/or beverages! See the ride schedule for more details. I do suggest that you check the Cog-online calendar of events for any changes and particulars. If you don't use the website. Feel free to contact me and I will fill you in on the particulars. Hopefully the Saratoga Un-Rally will be worth it. This should allow people or groups from New England, north, south and west to meet up if they so choose! Saratoga is not cheap during the sum-mer months, so expect a pricey week-end but of course feel free to stay where ever you like, and meet up with us. Hope to see y'all there.

RIDE REPORT Delaware River Run - April 17, 2011 By Jim Ansbro #8443 We began just a few miles from our start point and headed to Washing-ton Crossing Park, Pennsylvania, for the Norton Gathering. Within their flock were a multitude of manufactures, blasts from the past, and cur-rent. The Norton's are being manufactured again, but the price went up.. way up. From there we crossed over the Delaware, very close to where George Washington and troops had crossed back in 1776 creating the turning point in the revolutionary war. We travelled thru several small and quaint towns, while keeping the river close to us. Our journey northwest turned at Phillipsburg, NJ, where we again crossed the Dela-ware river into the town of Easton. The Lehigh river dumps into the Delaware at this point, from the pics, obviously therewas abit of cresting from the rivers created by the storm. Our restaurant stop (Larry Holmes) was disappointingly closed, only because it was Sunday... So we made the best of it, and went to an old country store that makes very good sandwiches and such.. All in all, despite the streams that continually crossed our path throughout the ride, all seemed satisfied with the journey!

provided for both Saturday (10/8) and Sunday (10/9). There is a nice lodge on premises with reasonable peak season rates (between $80 -$90, double occupancy plus modest seniors discount); reservations can be made by phone 276.865.4413). Lodge consists of 80 rooms in 6 buildings and I strongly recommend you make reservations early in the year… this is a very busy time of year for them and no rooms are blocked for us so it is first come, first served. Having stayed there before, I plan to try to get a room in the building that houses units 111-134; view out back is spectacular. Lodge also has a restaurant with good food and reasonable prices, and most meals (except when we’re on the road) will be there. Closest town about 10 miles away and meal options are a bit limited. Also, a nice campground in the park for those so inclined. Non-electric sites ~$15 or serviced $18-22/night. Book using the same number listed above for lodge reservations. http://www.breakspark.com/ Clyde Watson 804.771.3876 or 804-921-5896 cell [email protected]

OPINION The Vegetarian Motorcyclist By Neil Baldwin #5762 I’m used to being a bit of an, ah, eccentric when it comes to food and drink. As one piece of evidence, I’m known as a bit of a coffee aficionado (others seem to use the abbreviation “SNOB”) to the point that friends are scared to brew up any java when I come over. As another, I live in Grey county, one of Ontario’s prime cat-tle farming areas, and my preference not to eat things that walked, crawled, flew or swam, makes me a rare (and odd) bird ‘round these parts.

I think it was as I was riding through rural Pennsylvania, on the way to the Johnstown COG national, that I sat down in a roadside restaurant for a lunch break, looked around, and realized I bet-ter not inquire, “can you tell me the vege-tarian option today?” if I wanted to make it out alive. Now, I’m not quite sure why it is that motorcycling often seems to preclude what I refer to as “good” food, or why it is so difficult to find a decent latté within range of any biker get-together, but I don’t get steamed* about it because it’s a good reminder that riding is about being present, enjoying “what is”, and going

wherever the road (whether geographic or culinary) takes you. Motorcycling is not good for control freaks because, plan as you like, it will always involve hap-penstance to some extent. I used to be someone who liked to know exactly what to expect. Well, I still am sort of. But life in general, and riding in specifics, is a great teacher in this regard. I do still plan for contingencies but I rarely get para-lyzed by the unknown anymore. Living too much in the past or future can be dangerous when combined with riding. *hope you’ll excuse the pun… get it: “steamed”, “latte” OK, forget it, I thought it was funny but then again my Jeep has a custom license plate CAFE 0L8 so what does that tell ya!

SIWIK STUFF I WISH I KNEW . . . when I first started riding a Connie

(advice & wisdom for newbies & others)

It was designed for Europe, that’s why your thighs will get fried in the summer in the heat, Baker Air Wings are wonderful.

The saddle bag can be installed if you start them forward about an inch and then move them back.

The front brake pads will last 16K miles and work better than EDC pads.

It’s really a ZX-10 with smaller carbs and milder cams.

The mirrors will become loose if you move them around.

You need the right sized air pump to work the rear shock pressure. 5 to 50 lbs.

Valve adjustments can wait for 10K miles if you don't dog it at high RPM's.

The rear bags are wider than the mirrors

The engine heat eats batteries.

Clearview makes a 11" tall windscreen.

Running it one gear down, 4th gear not 5th, helps handling.

Adjust the cam chain tensioner now & then, cuts down on noise.

Don't over load the saddle bags.

The porous cast mag. wheels bleed air over time, check once a week.

The fuel tank does rust, top off in the winter before you store.
