including Painting Pending. It’s a great venue with a lot of top bands. I’m seeing Me vs Hero and Twister there soon.
JONATHAN SHERRIFF, 28 CINEMA STAFF, SUNDERLAND
I’ve just been to Hoochie Coochie to see local band, Solutions. It’s got a great atmosphere and a fantastic selection
of local DJs who play underground soul. I’ve also been to the O2 Academy to see a few bigger acts including Basement Jaxx and Less Than Jake.

Through its protagonists Christine and Hendrik, the piece looks at some big questions about identity and the meaning of life. We’ve been to the Theatre Royal recently to see Top Hat. The wit, the singing, all the songs and the movement

JILL WESOLOWSKI, 32 RECEPTIONIST, NEWCASTLE
I’ve been to a comedy improv night at The Stand. There were a few local comics on and the headliner was really great - in fact all
of the acts were pretty good. I’ve been a few times before and it’s always worth popping along to!
SARAH LEECH, 50 STAFF NURSE, NEWCASTLE
I recently went to see the Pet Shop Boys at the Sage Gateshead. It was a really amazing show, they were great. Seeing them in a
smaller and more intimate environment was a great experience. It was just incredible, the atmosphere was amazing.

BIG MOUTH STRIKES AGAIN
First shock delivered by Google re Ruby Wax: She is 61! When did that happen? Mind, when you consider that she has been a national (if American-born) institution for more than 30 years, the sums add up, and her voice - brash, penetrating, American - is as familiar on our telly and radio as any homegrown talent.
Never afraid to let her motormouth go, she plays up to the British stereotype of the outspoken American, yet her searing wit is so unlike that of her home country, she’s a naturalised Brit.
Here’s more about the actor, writer, director, comedian, and now mental health campaigner...
She was born Ruby Wachs to Polish Jewish parents who had fled Austria in 1939 for America. Her father was a wealthy sausage manufacturer.
She is classically trained and internationally renowned as an actor, director and writer. Having said that, after starting out in the late 70s with the RSC, she went on to appear briefly as a secretary in that cinematic classic Omen III: The Final Conflict, but we all make mistakes.
Her long-standing writing and directing partner is the great classical actor (and Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films) Alan Rickman.
Her 1990s BBC series Ruby Wax Meets, in which she managed to persuade celebrities to open their homes and their hearts to her, was telly gold. The editions featuring Pamela Anderson, Imelda Marcos and Sarah, Duchess of York remain classics.
She has branded her 1994 interview with Madonna as her “most miserable showbiz experience”, explaining that the singer did not appreciate Wax putting her (Madonna’s) knickers on her head for comic effect. “She hasn’t called me since,” Wax has said.
A respected campaigner on mental health issues, Wax’s new one-woman show, Sane New World, explores the ways in which human beings sabotage their sanity and offers tips to survive the 21st Century.
She’s got 92,400 followers on Twitter and follows just 424 twitterers, including NASA, Dame Edna Everidge, and the Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre.

THE RIGHT STUFF
From a council estate teenager with a video camera and big dreams to millionaire media mogul, Jamal Edwards, 23, has revolutionised the way young people access music via his online channel SBTV.
The face of NE1’s Newcastle Music Week from October 25-31, he is an internationally renowned innovator and youth spokesman, who was once dubbed the ‘Urban Richard Branson’. Edwards has been the face of Puma, appeared in an ad for Google Chrome, launched the career of Ed Sheeran and featured on the cover of The Economist. Here’s more..
What are you most looking forward to during NE1’s Newcastle Music Week?Getting an insight into the talent in Newcastle through the UGOT On the Right Tracks talent search, and bringing SBTV to the city. I’ll also be at Space2; telling young people how to follow their dreams.
Why is Music Week important? Music is a huge part of culture and should be celebrated. This is a great opportunity to celebrate our musicians.
How’s Newcastle’s music scene doing these days? The city is alive with music. There are a lot of talented artists out there
who can follow in the footsteps of Sting, The Lighthouse family and even Jimi Hendrix, who in his early days performed on the streets of Newcastle.
How do you spend your spare time?Music is my life. Even when I’m away from work I’m listening to music.
What was the first record you bought? Sex Packets by Digital Underground. I listen to all genres of music; it just depends on my mood.
Has your taste in music changed over the years? I used to listen to a lot of grime and rap. As I’ve grown up, I’ve learned to appreciate talent across genres.
How might your friends describe you?Hard working, dedicated - and crazy!
I’m meeting you for the first time, how do I recognise you? I have an addiction to hats and trainers. I think I have more than 400 hats. You’ll spot the hat and the fresh pair of kicks and know it’s me.
What would your superpower be?To go back in time and see Amy Winehouse and Michael Jackson a few more times. That would be amazing.

The ever-cheery Jon Richardson is back on the road with his new show Nidiot, which follows a string of TV appearances including as team captain on Channel 4’s 8 out of 10 Cats.
A misanthropic soul, we’re told Richardson is still single but determined to change his ways and become more easy going person for the sake of his friends and his future health. Mark Watson’s new show Flaws, which gained rave

The truth is, life isn’t easy - and neither is stand-up. Expect experiences including the times Watson found himself unable to step onto a stage without drinking a bottle of wine, losing his cool at a film premiere, threatening a call centre worker, and calling his toaster a ‘bell-end’.Northern Stage,
