2020 2020 VisionVision

In 2020, the Irish marine sector will sell into specialised global

and local markets in a dynamic, innovative and

technologically driven manner, by means of strong

industry research partnerships, a skilled workforce and a

strategic capability that responds to markets and

technology. It will be internationally recognised for its

high quality marine environment and characterised

by coherent policy and regulation.

Must Deliver

Research Leading to:

Growth Competitiveness New business opportunities Environmental Sustainability

Page 7: NDP 2007 – 2013 Marine Research Sub Programme Information Day Monday, 10th September 2007 Marine Institute, Oranmore.

Key Objectives

1. Increase the economic value of the indigenous marine sector 2. New business start-ups in new industries that have yet to be

developed e.g. Wave and tidal energy generation, Biotechnology, Environmental Goods and Services, ICT etc.

3. Enable development to occur in compliance with the principles of environmental sustainability, whist improving our understanding of the marine environment;

4. Build new marine related research capacity and capabilities to add to enhance our knowledge base and establish stronger third level industry links;

5. Contribute to improvements in the development of public sector policy making, regulation and planning;

6. Create new opportunities and increased economic activity in Ireland’s coastal communities related; and

7. Develop greater co-operation between North and South by developing joint marine initiatives that benefit the island of Ireland.

• R&D and innovation deals with ‘future potential’ and ‘opportunity’ thus much of the information required to prioritise projects is at best uncertain and at worse very unreliable
