industry research partnerships, a skilled workforce and a

technology. It will be internationally recognised for its

by coherent policy and regulation.

1. Increase the economic value of the indigenous marine sector 2. New business start-ups in new industries that have yet to be

developed e.g. Wave and tidal energy generation, Biotechnology, Environmental Goods and Services, ICT etc.

3. Enable development to occur in compliance with the principles of environmental sustainability, whist improving our understanding of the marine environment;

4. Build new marine related research capacity and capabilities to add to enhance our knowledge base and establish stronger third level industry links;

5. Contribute to improvements in the development of public sector policy making, regulation and planning;

6. Create new opportunities and increased economic activity in Ireland’s coastal communities related; and

7. Develop greater co-operation between North and South by developing joint marine initiatives that benefit the island of Ireland.

data critical for climate change assessment into other sampling programmes;• Publish an National Ocean Climate Change Research Plan 2008 to 2013

Underwater TV, Argo Profiling Floats, Remotely Operated Vehicle, Inshore Data Buoy, Off Shore Met Ocean Climate Observations, Autonomous Underwater Glider, Computer Cluster Upgrade, Acoustic Monitoring System, Automatic Water Monitoring Station, Directional Wave Buoy and Research Vessel CTD System.

Marine Biodiscovery/Biotechnology PhD Scholarships

• Funding for three PhD Scholarships in MarineBiodiscovery/Biotechnology:

– International Centre for Neurotherapeutics, DCU

– School of Biotechnology, DCU– Centre for Synthesis and Chemical Biology,

UCD.

• Total Investment - €20 million.• 7 research groups/centres in 6 Higher

Education were successful.• Hydraulics & Maritime Research

Centre, University College Cork received € 3,474,408

- 4 Researchers - 3 PhD Students - 14 summer undergraduate placements.

Griffith Geoscience Research Awards

• Total investment – €10 million• 8 research groups were successful • Biogeoscience Research Group, National University of Ireland Galway received

€3,144,061 for 3 Researchers, 6 PhD

Studentships and 18 Student Placements.• Coastal and Marine Resources Centre, University College Cork received €851,878 for 3 Researchers.
