The Transcontinental Scientist
By Wim Delva for Science
I suppose my penchant for crossinginternational borders started when I wasjust 3 months old. That's when my twinbrother and I flew across the ocean fromChile after being adopted by Belgianparents. Later, my undergraduateresearch led me to Kenya for a 3-monthresearch internship, where my interestin HIV and statistics was born.
Then, halfway through my Ph.D.studies, I moved from Belgium to SouthAfrica, where my wife is from. In the 8years since, I have found career opportunities that keep me connected toboth countries, and I have experienced the rewards-and challenges-of beinga human bridge across two continents.

Women Crack Academic Glass Ceiling
by Linda Wang for Chemical & Engineering News
Efforts to increase therepresentation of womenamong chemistry faculty attop Ph.D.-grantinginstitutions appear to bepaying off. The percentage ofwomen holding facultypositions at the top 50schools in terms of chemicalR&D spending was 19.1%for the 2014-15 academic year, a more than 2% gain over the previousacademic year, according to the latest survey conducted by the OpenChemistry Collaborative in Diversity Equity (OXIDE), a diversity equityinitiative cofunded by the National Science Foundation, the NationalInstitutes of Health, and the Department of Energy.
"We have been looking at such small incremental pushes in the past, andto see an almost 2% jump in the last year shows that there is somethinghappening within this field," says Dontarie M. Stallings, OXIDE's researchand program manager. "There is recognition of what females bring to ourchemistry field and to our community."
