There are wounds that permanently disfigure us, leaving us with a constant reminder of an injury. A drunk driver disables one for life. A sexual predator robs our self-confidence and self-esteem, and we struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression while the perpetrator walks away. Someone hurts our child, and our anger becomes all-encompassing, eating us alive.

Most human beings understand that forgiveness is essential to living a healthy and productive life. Yet, there are moments when forgiveness becomes a challenge. A perpetrator might be unrepentant. Or, “things happen” in the background, in board rooms behind closed doors, and we don’t even know who has hurt us. While we are left with devastating consequences, the rest of the world goes on as though nothing has happened.

Forgiveness is written for those who are struggling with forgiveness, have significant wounds, and can’t seem to find their way to healing and for Christians who are not dealing with a particular forgiveness issue, but who are striving to make forgiveness a daily spiritual practice.

Chiara Lubich is now being called a great Catholic mystic of our times. Mystics are those individuals whom God allows to have a unique experience of communion with God and insight into the things of God. In these letters we encounter this mystical side of Chiara who is also the bearer of a charism, a gift from the Holy Spirit in response to the special needs of the Church and of the world. Chiara’s charism is unity, the unity that Jesus asked for us from his Father: “May they may be one as we are one – I in them and you in me – so that they may be brought to complete unity” (Jn 17: 22-23).

Chiara saw God’s love in everyone and everything. The light of this discovery enveloped her, and she felt like she was at the center of the Father’s love. This discovery is at the foundation of Chiara’s spirituality which emerges from these early letters. They were written to the young women and others who were drawn by the way she presented the Christian life as a response to God’s love, which was shown to her in Jesus, most especially in his abandonment and death on the Cross.

In these letters, the God that Chiara invites us to believe in is Love. The conversion she asks of us is a conversion to Love. Often using the language and style of the saints and mystics of other ages (like Saint Catherine of Siena and Saint Francis of Assisi), Chiara communicates her burning desire that “Love be loved,” that “all the world be set ablaze by the fire of Love.” Her words are full of fervor, but also simplicity and practical common sense.

Early LettersAt the Origins of a New SpiritualityCHIARA LUBICH

An internationally known religious leader and writer, Italian-born Chiara Lubich (1920-2008) was described by the New York Times as one of the most influential women in the Catholic Church. She was president of the Focolare Movement, and her work has been recognized by universities, agencies, foundations, nations, states, and municipalities including 15 honorary doctorates, numerous civic awards, the Templeton Prize for Progress of Religion, and the UNESCO Peace Prize. She published over 50 books in 29 languages, with more than one million copies sold.

Muslims and Christians in many parts of the world meet ever more frequently. Often Muslims ask Christians about their faith and practice. This volume deals with 12 of the most important questions and explains their wider background in Muslim religious thought. From the perspective of Christian faith and theology and of dialogue with Muslims, the Christian positions are clarified; and sensitive, honest proposals are made for responding to the questions. In this way the volume offers Christians and Muslims a precious help for orientation and a solid basis for interreligious encounter and dialogue.

“Interreligious dialogue involves the sensitive asking of questions in order to achieve mutual understanding and respect. In this introductory text Father Troll shows himself to be a faithful Catholic practitioner of dialogue and an outstanding scholar of Islam.”

Reverend James MassaFormer Executive Director, USCCB Secretariat

for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs

“Based on his decades-long experience living and teaching among Muslims, Fr. Troll answers questions asked by Muslims about the beliefs and practices of their Christian neighbors. He places each set of questions within the context of contemporary Muslim perceptions, along with their sources in Islamic scripture and traditions. He answers them following orthodox Roman Catholic and traditional Protestant teachings. The book covers topics ranging from scripture, Jesus and Muhammad, to the Christian Church, Eucharistic celebration, priestly celibacy, and religious freedom. Muslims Ask, Christians Answer is a must-read for both experts and casual readers alike.”

Everyone knows about the “mystery” of the Big Bang – what started it? This book is about the other “creation mystery” – where did human beings, in particular, come from? In his fascinating, accessible and thorough study, renowned priest and academic Brendan Purcell shows the complementarity that scientists, theologians, and philosophers bring to a deeper understanding of the mystery of human existence and human consciousness.

From Big Bang to Big MysteryHuman Origins in the Light of Creation and EvolutionBRENDAN PURCELL

Brendan Purcell is Adjunct Professor in the School of Philosophy at Notre Dame University, Sydney. Having studied philosophy at University College Dublin, theology at the Pontifical Lateran University Rome, and Psychology at the University of Leuven, he lectured in Philosophical Anthropology and Psychology at University College Dublin, retiring as Senior Lecturer in the School of Philosophy in 2008.

“Purcell moves easily from the best scientific data on evolutionary genetics to mystical affirmations of God without skipping a beat. This is an astonishing, learned, and profoundly moving book.”

David WalshProfessor of Politics, The Catholic University of America

“Brendan Purcell has given us a study of human origins that is comprehensive, wise, and of startling philosophical clarity. He combines the latest discoveries in paleoanthropology, genetics, neuroscience, linguistics, and other sciences with the insights of thinkers from Xenophanes and Aristotle to Eric Voegelin and Bernard Lonergan to produce a deeply impressive and convincing synthesis.”

In the Catholic and Orthodox traditions, Mary is a key to our grasp of the Christian mystery. She is the Mother of God, as an early Council of the Church (Ephesus 431) stressed. As such she is a key to understanding the Christian Faith. In fact, she shows the beauty of that faith in its completeness, proportion and radiance. Mary is ‘the Mother of beautiful Love.’ Anyone who wants to better understand the Mother of Jesus, who is interested in Mary’s place in literature and art, or who is looking for a new perspective on Mary’s role in ecumenical dialogue should have this book.

Father Norris beautifully depicts Mary’s womb as the place where, united in her Son, the divine nature and the human nature rhyme.

Thomas Norris, a priest of the Diocese of Ossory (Ireland), is professor emeritus of systematic theology at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth. A member of the International Theological Commission, he has authored eleven books, among them The Trinity: Life of God, Hope for Humanity; A Fractured Relationship: Faith and the Crisis of Culture; Cardinal Newman for Today and numerous articles.

“This richly textured reflection on the place of Mary in the mystery of salvation is a beautiful and rewarding example of lectio divina. Prayerfully, perceptively and poetically, Fr. Thomas Norris unfoldsthe scriptural teaching on God’s purpose and enables us to see Mary afresh and love her anew as a woman of the Word, utterly faithful and uniquely fruitful, not only an example to believers but mother also. The interweaving throughout of scriptural exposition with theology and the Church’s doctrine impressively conveys the essential bond between the latter and God’s word, and also the integral place of Mariology in the fabric of Christian belief.”

The crisis that market societies are undergoing is essentially a crisis of relationships. It originates in the illusion that the market, through the actions of an “invisible hand” operating in impersonal market relationships, can present us a good common life that is exempt from the possibility of being wounded by the other.

Luigino Bruni offers an authoritative and innovative look at the cultural and anthropological premises underlying contemporary market economies and their promises. He suggests that the market has betrayed its promises, offering the prevalence of unhappiness in our cities as evidence, and points out the need for balancing the increasing tendency toward isolation with the human need for relationships.

Bruni proposes gratuitousness – free and open reciprocity, quite different from altruism – as a means of maximizing the benefits of the market (and the equality and freedom that market contracts propose) without losing the joy that comes from putting the relationship with the others in the market as the primary good.

Saint John of the Cross is known as the Doctor of Mystical Theology. The central theme of his mysticism is that through a life of pure faith and love of God, the soul may attain union with the Divine. As your retreat master and companion, John challenges you to become like Christ, to be wounded and suffer with Him, to be consumed by His presence and thus to be emptied of self, to be purified in heart and mind, and finally to be overcome and transformed by His love so that you love with God’s love and discover your true image at the heart of the Trinity. The ultimate consequence of your 15 day journey with John of the Cross may therefore be the deep mystical union with God that John placed at the center of the Christian life.

Jean-Claude Colin (1790-1875) and some companions were not yet 30 years old when they decided to begin a religious family dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. The group would become the Society of Mary (Marists). Having experienced the turbulent French Revolution as children, they felt the need to proclaim that the Gospel had something important to offer people. Colin was convinced that in order to meet the needs of troubled and discouraged Christians, the Church needed to find a way to present the Good News with a greater sense of compassion and humility. Colin had a wide vision and field of action, sending missionaries as far away as Oceania. These meditations invite you to reflect upon the courage and selflessness that imitate the spirit of Mary and that continue to draw people to the Marist life.

François Drouilly, is a French Marist priest who has worked principally in education and who spent six years as chaplain at the Centre of Saint Bernadette of Lourdes in Nevers. He has written on education and also on Saint Bernadette.

The version of the Rule of St. Augustine used at the Abbey of St. Victor began with the command to love God above all things and one’s neighbor as oneself. Not surprisingly, then, love was a pervasive theme in the writings produced there, many of which are introduced and translated here : (1) five lyrical essays by Hugh of St. Victor (d. 1141): The Praise of Charity; The Betrothal Gift of the Soul; In Praise of the Spouse; On the Substance of Love; What Truly Should Be Loved?; (2) On the Four Degrees of Violent Love, by Richard of St. Victor (d. 1173), which traces the likenesses and differences between romantic love and the love of God; (3) Achard of St. Victor (d. 1170), Sermon 5 and two of Adam of St. Victor’s sequences are examples of how these authors wove love into their writings ; (4) excerpts from the Microcosmus by Godfrey of St. Victor (d. ca. 1195) summarize the central place of love in his humanistic theological anthropology.

Hugh Feiss, OSB, the editor of this volume, translated Achard of St. Victor, Works (2001).

“Hugh Feiss and his team have made an invaluable contribution to medieval studies. These twelfth-century texts, assembled for the first time in one volume, still blaze with the passionate love of God that once set a world on fire. In Victorine hands, exegesis, liturgy, psychology, and even cosmology glow with this transforming flame. Hugh and Richard had an incalculable influence on later medieval piety, while the lesser-known texts by Adam, Achard, and Godfrey round out this picture of the great Parisian abbey in its heyday.”

“This new but old Commentary takes us out of the small, closed-minded world in which much modern biblical scholarship is done into an earlier time marked by a Christian seriousness, by robust inquiry and by believing faith. [La Biblia Comentada por los Padres de la Iglesia] is a fresh breeze blowing in our empty, post-modern world.”
